It was difficult picking just one class because there were so many of them I wanted to take. Lawrence Arts Center has so much to offer all age groups. My class was a human hodge podge of ages and experience. The building is stunning. You are immediately taken in by the color collections and the great use of space and light of this building. Everywhere you look there is alluring and interesting artwork. Even the elevator interior is adorned with colorful sunflower art. This is a happy place, a very happy place. The classrooms are spacious and light. They have all sorts of cool equipment for the students to create their artwork. The instructors are all very knowledgeable and experienced in their craft. I was very impressed with the accommodations provided. There is ample parking and a parking garage is located across the street. There is no issue with access. All in all this is a terrific asset to the city. If you have some time on your hands and find yourself downtown, this is the place to be!

For an art reception, I think the volume should be low enough to actually enjoy the experience--not overpower it. The other problem was the purchasing experience. When I wanted to buy a piece (which was priced at the kind of level where you're spending thousands), the process was oddly inconvenient. I had to stand in line at the bar, and while the staff was multitasking making me feel rushed and an inconvenience. It felt like hospitality and customer care took a back seat to everything else. I'd love to come back because the gallery itself is fantastic--but I hope they reconsider the noise level and make the buying process more focused and respectful for serious collectors.

It's hidden from view from the street, but very much worth navigating your way off the beaten path, down the staircase and entering the netherworld. The gallery is a well curated space featuring several local artists works for exhibit and sale. The art is all fascinatingly dark in subject matter - with occult, gothic, necromancer... subject matter. All of the art is interspersed by collections of artifacts some for display most for sale; ranging from medical tools, taxidermy, wet specimens, a mad scientist laboratory, and all the way up to an actual human skull. DHG is not for the faint of heart, the fundamental religious or those that believe that Thomas Kinkade's work is interesting or art. The gallery director Darren is quite welcoming and engaging as was one of the featured artists that was on site - John Kelly. Local artist and "rogue taxidermist" Simone Smith was heavily featured with her wide array of pieces and the model for another featured artist's b/w photography. Check the hours before you go, they are usually open only weekend evenings, but they are well worth the trip to an under rated and emerging neighborhood. The 3rd Friday Englewood Art's Walk is a sure way to visit when they are open and see a multi-block arts fest.
