Killer food and over the top Micheladas! Everyone take note of this nondescript strip- mall Mexican restaurant. We had the carne asada tacos and they were absolutely outstanding. The meat is top notch and comes wrapped in freshly made tortillas, this is the real deal. I was very impressed with their Mexican corn cup, if you have spent any time in Mexico, this is a staple on the streets and something rarely found in the States. It was prepared exactly as the best purveyors on the streets of Mexico would serve it. Finally, the component that will bring me back on my next trip to Austin - the Michelada. Made with care and love, the Micheladas here are not just Clamato and beer, they bring out all the stops to make the best Michelada in Austin. Two stars doesn't represent 2/5, but rather the "Meh, I've experienced better" description that Yelp provides for this level of stars. I stopped in at the beginning of lunch on Sunday and ordered 3 steak tacos and an iced tea. I thought it was a bit high, running between $13-$14 for a counter service lunch. Maybe I was starving, but the restaurant, while not busy, was also a bit slow for quick/counter service. So, on to the tacos... My tacos were described as seasoned with sea salt and black pepper. I didn't taste either. The tortillas were warmed on the grill, which primarily served to harden them to somewhere between the consistency of soft and crispy tacos. The salsa had a nice black pepper taste, but was very watery in its consistency. It wasn't bad, but very unmemorable at this price point. Save your money. Dos mas in my face please. Save yourself the trouble and just get the tacos. The pirate soup is only one cent but it's just frijoles a la charra. And the granny elotes is a little heavy on the mayo. The July specialty taco, pibil, was delicious but that doesn't do you any good now since it's August. Get the pirata with beef though, holy heck that's yummy. Super tiny little bites of beef and good seasoning. Avocado and cheese and the toasty tortilla, mmmm. It's also as big as your arm, did I mention that. I went in with almost no expectations, but walked out pretty well delighted. This little strip mall restaurant offers woodfired tacos and sandwiches that are downright delectable. The meat is grilled, tender, and tasty. Both the chicken and the beef are delicious, but the chicken edges out the steak, probably due to the fact that it's grilled thigh meat, which makes it ridiculously moist. The tortillas and the bread for the sandwiches are a wonderful compliment to the meat, and the fixins just add to the experience. We added some beans and didn't touch them, so I can't speak to them. But the Mexican corn is really good, if a bit more tart than I'm used to. The guacamole is also really good, basic, but fresh and delicious. The salsa is warm, which is not my favorite, but that's really a personal preference. The atmosphere is a bit sterile, in line with the strip mall location. But the food is fab. read more

Every time I sit and wait for my to-go order (because that's how I always get my Pirata), I always look at the mural and wonder who painted it. It's like a Mexican cowboy and a Japanese martial arts guy or something like that. It doesn't make sense, but I can tell someone who painted it at least probably cared about what they were doing. That kind of care can also be seen with the staff. The same girl always takes my order, and she is always so sweet and has a great attitude. This is one of my favorite neighborhood guilty pleasures. I always get the Junior size Pirata taco (wood-fired beef, cheese and avocado), and that is plenty of food for me. I always leaving wondering if I smell like a fire pit because they cook/smoke all their meat on site. They have a pretty good menu that goes beyond the Pirata, and their queso is really good, too. The menu to this place is dirt simple, which is why it was funny to see a huge chalkboard on the wall with one item scrawled on it. This month's taco is Cochinita Pibil, and it was nice and juicy and outstanding. The taco itself was on a very small tortilla. I also ordered the Taco Pirata and that was outstanding. TL,DR: The tacos are a tad pricey but what you get in a single taco is well worth it. As an Allandale resident, we are spoiled with the choices we have for eateries in our lovely neighborhood. I've been here a couple times now and I have yet to be disappointed. I can't really speak for the dining experience because both orders were to go, but I can speak to the quality of food they produce. I've ordered the Quesosteak Tortas and Pirata tacos and both were excellent. Their claim to fame are the meats being wood fired and it really comes across when you bite into their food. I had the pirata taco a few hours ago and it was certainly a meatapalooza. It was constructed rather interestingly with the first layer on top of the tortilla being the cheese, then avocado and then all the meat. The flavor profile of the bite is quite unique and intense in some respect with the char from the wood fire coming through quite nicely. This is the first place I have gone to eat at since my brother passed away unexpectedly earlier this month. I am not usually in North Austin so this place stood out. My husband and I were the only people there when we visited. The only reason I take off a star is because I feel that the prices are too high. Their queso is great. It was like a cheese gravy that was heavily seasoned with black pepper. It tasted good though. The staff was excellent. I tried and fish taquito and a carnita taquito. I love that everything tasted clean and fresh, not greasy and stale. I also appreciate that they used an abundance of fresh cilantro. It was not fragments of the spice, either, it was actually nice segments of cilantro throughout the tacos. That part was great. I like the odd huge wall paintings of like a Samurai and a Cowboy. They even have Cheech and Chong dolls above the wall where you order. I found it oddly comforting. My husband wants to try the "Hybrid" thanks to your reviews. He ended up with the steak taco that is the larger one. He liked it. I like that they offered charro beans and Mexican creamed corn as sides. They also have Choco-flan..which was described as flan mixed with chocolate cake. My brother would have liked to have tried that if he were still here. Maybe some other time.... The store was clean, everything looked presentable, and I liked their white Ikea chairs because they offer comfort and support. This is an unusually awesome place to try. In Mexico, there are many small eateries that only specialize in one item. This is not strange. It is just another way of doing the restaurant thing. So that's what Dos Batos is: a specialist restaurant that does norteño style beef tacos. A simple taquería. They don't need a multitude of menu items. What they do, they do dang well. The decor is simple, and the place is bright and clean. Dos Batos appears to be run by a Mexican-American family (I am guessing with some connection to Monterrey) and the place is friendly to a multi-ethnic clientele while serving an authentic Northern Mexican taco. The beef...oh the beef. That wood-fired method gives the beef this amazing, luscious smokeyness. The beef is the backbone of this taquería, and it is some good beef. They have a few menu items that feature the beef in some combo with asadero cheese (think of it as the Northern Mexican mozzarella) and chunks of avocado. The white flour tortilla is stuffed and then griddle-toasted so all that cheese gets molten inside and binds the fillings together into a beautiful, moist taco. The salsa roja was very fresh and tasty, made of roasted ingredients and then cooked off, leaving it with a lightly smokey touch. And did I mention that the smokey beef is...oh, the beef! The salsa compliments the beef very well. Order one big taco and it is like eating two small at any other place. I like the pirata. I went to Dos Batos a number of times when they first opened and they were still figuring out their format. (I do miss the "add a side for a penny!"). I won't give it away but lets take a small quiz, shall we? QUIZ -------- What makes barbecue amazing? ... What gives artisan pizzas their crunch and perfect imperfections. ... Why are camp out burgers better than those made on your $500 Weber propane grill? ... Still don't get it? What's the main component in cooking "smoked salmon?" It's smoke! if you answered "smoke" to any of the questions above give yourself a gold star. Since early times man has been harnessing fire to cook delicious animal parts but what early man didn't realize is that the smoke is a key part of grilled items. "Boo hoo" I say to all these clean burning gas grills. More often than not places are reverting to classic methods to get those classic flavors. Smokey the bear might have taught us, "where there's smoke, there's fire." Well had that bear spent less time worrying about national parks, I'm sure the saying would have gone "where there's smoke, there's flavor." Let me start by saying that if Dos Batos was located in a town like Nashville or St. Louis and I didn't know better, it would probably get a 4-star rating. But in a town filled with truly GREAT tacos, Dos Batos pales in comparison. It did not get a one-star rating because the flavor of my taco was very good. Wood fired is what they promised...and that is what I got...but not much more. I got there around 11:30 and ordered the "Pirata" taco...got a large, which was larger than your average taco...and a bit smaller than a burrito. Filling for sure. On the positive side, the angus steak was very good, tortilla was nicely toasted and the avocado was a nice touch. On the bad side, the cheese was goopie, the taco wasn't very hot, and overall I felt that the flavor profile lacked color. That said, if I had a long night of drinking behind me or I needed hangover food, this taco would have fit the bill. But since those days are largely gone, and I have perhaps been spoiled by the likes of Torchy's Tacos and Tacodeli. Those joints have amazing flavor profiles in all of their tacos and are able to do wonders with a nice variety of ingredients. This taco was just a meat and cheese taco with a bit of avocado, which is a meaty veg anyway. Not a ton of contrast. Granted, I didn't really try anything else here...and I still may go back to try something else, but I do believe that one of the true tests of any place selling Mexican food is their salsa. And I must say that the salsa here rated pretty low on the scale. I'd say 4 out of 10, with 1 being TacoBell. It was overly processed, very watery, not particularly hot, and not very flavorful. A good friend of mine turned me on to Dos Batos and I'm very glad he did. When you first walk in the place seems a little bare with it's big open space, white walls, and white tables. I actually found this nice clean open feeling rather pleasing. I guess I get tired of the overly cluttered and busy places you walk in to so often when dining out. Just a personal preference I guess. The menu here is unique. It's very short and basic. This is part of what Dos Batos is going for, the concept of simple and good food. I was a bit put off as you rarely see menus this small. I placed my order for a Pirata and a Flauta and it came out within a few minutes. One bite and I was hooked. The food here may not be from an extensive selection, but it's damn good. The beef in the Pirata had a perfect flavor from the wood grilling and was worth every penny. I'm not a bean eater (imagine that, a hispanic dude that doesn't eat beans) but the group I was with all raved about them. I'll admit, this place might seem a bit expensive at first. A meal with a soda will set you back about $10-12. Honestly, the food is good enough that the price didn't bother me at all. I mean seriously, I can blow $12 on a sushi roll and not even blink. General Consensus: A small but focused menu of really good prepared tacos in a clean, bright atmosphere. Service is friendly and food is well seasoned and came out piping hot. Food: Hybrid: A woodfired taco--which is a blend of smoky top sirloin steak, cheese, and avocado with tender onions, mushrooms and bell peppers. The regular, not the junior, is HUGE. It was a large taco that was the size of an omlette--the taco exterior was slightly crisp on the outside but soft when you bit into the flour tortilla. The meat was well seasoned, juicy and slightly smoky, mixed with chunks of creamy avocado and just enough but not too much gooey cheese. I loved the slices of red and green bell peppers--the vegetables were sauted and tender without being mushy and still slightly caramelized at the edges. Granny Elote: Their original Mexican Cream Corn. I don't care what they put in it, this stuff was fantastic. It was a container of piping hot corn sprinkled with some salt and paprika, or chili powder that just added this lovely bite. The corn was sweet and the cream/liquid was slightly but not overwhelmingly cheesey, with a bit of heat in the aftertaste and just so slightly tart. I ordered it on a whim and glad I did. Good stuff. Guacamole: Contains no cilantro for those that hate it or think it tastes like soap. I usually love throwing fistfuls of cilantro into food while I can and didn't miss it in their version of Guac. It was almost pure avocado mash with no frills--seasoned well and with a slight spicyness in the after taste. The tortilla chips came out warm and were crisp and just slightly salted. Great! Choco Flan: I was slightly mollified at the thought of cake and flan together but after having one bite after another I was surprised the two went well together. The chocolate cake (remember, I'm not a fan of chocolate desserts) had a tender, moist and slightly loose crumb and not overly chocolately or fudgy. On top of the cake is about an inch thick or so of incredibly rich, eggy flan. It's not as traditionally silky or creamy as regular flan but still very tasty. Both elements--the cake and flan tasted good separately but also went together surprisingly well--the flan was like the icing for the not too rich chocolate cake. It IS a heavy dessert though so I would recommend sharing a piece. Atmosphere and Service: It's a bright, sparkly clean interior and one side of the wall has a Japanese samurai/spaghetti Western/ painting on one side which I thought was pretty nifty . The service was prompt and VERY friendly--the cashier apologized for the guacamole taking 6 minutes to be prepared--which we had NO problem and told her that it wasn't an issue--and she gave us a slice of the Choco Flan on the house anyways for us being patient. I didn't have any expectations coming into this place but just for some really, really good simple tacos come here. No this doesn't have the larger variety of taco selections that Torchy's or Taco Deli has, but it doesn't really NEED to be frilly when what they have, which is very simple, is prepared very, very well. read more

I've been obsessed with micheladas for about a decade now. Unfortunately, my first ever michelada experience was in Mexico, so it's been quite difficult to find anything even remotely close to the authenticity of my original. When I recently ran across an article on theAustinot about where to find the best, most authentic micheladas in town, I knew I had to try them all. Dos Batos was the first stop on my list, and sho nuff, their michelada was amazing! It didn't come in a styrofoam cup I got from a drive thru beverage barn in Mexico, but it will certainly do! One thing to note, if you're a fellow michelada connoisseur, is that they do not put ice in them. I prefer mine with ice, so next time I'll definitely ask for some on the side. I also ordered chips and salsa and a taco to go with my delicious adult beverage. The chips were fresh, and the salsa was served warm and had a wonderful smoky/chipotle flavor. It could have been spicier, but I like my food HOT so take that with a grain of salt. I got the Pirata taco, and from first bite to last, it didn't disappoint. The sirloin was extremely tender and flavorful, and the combo of the sirloin with the cheese and avocado on a warm homemade tortilla was just perfect. I was glad I only ordered 1 taco because I was satisfied with it and the chips, and anything more would have been too much food. Overall, I had a wonderful first experience! Excellent wood fired meats. We had chicken and beef. Loved the warm salsa as well as the super spicy green sauce. Green sauce is a must, just be careful of the heat. I'm here mostly to decry the "Granny elote" which tasted exactly like vomit. Not a little bit like vomit, not sorta like vomit. EXACTLY like vomit. It's a creamy mixture of corn, butter, chili powder, and way, waaaay too much lime, the acidity of which gives the whole thing its hot barf flavor. I'm not anti-lime, but this is an incredibly misguided dish. Other than that, the Quesosteak torta was like a decent cheesesteak. It's not fancy. I'd eat here again to try a taco, if I could justify the cost. I don't think you really can get lunch for less than $10 (one taco ala carte is over $7, no drink, no side, no nothing) and the food doesn't warrant the expense. read more

Pretty decent! Their queso is simple but direct, styled like Torchy's without all the additions. The tacos are filled then grilled, almost quesadilla style. It's a little pricey (like tarka scale), but it's quality food and the employees were very nice. It smells like a wood stove (mmmm) although the seating is generic. I am a taco lover. I live in the North Shoal Creek area. So naturally, I really wanted to love the new taco place five minutes away from home. But these are my issues with Dos Batos: The tacos sound delicious and contain potentially delicious ingredients, but are ridiculously bland. Even the salsa didn't do a thing to enhance the flavor. I had the taco verde, with pork, verde sauce, onions and cilantro, and all I tasted was salt.. the verde part wasn't even detectable. I also ordered a pirata, which are hugely popular (and delish) in my husband's hometown of Laredo. Though the tortilla was fresh and tasty, the beef inside was fatty and absolutely tasteless. Even the perfectly melted cheese and slice of avocado couldn't make up for that, and when I doused it with salsa hoping for a bit of flavor, nothing changed. Tacos are supposed to be yummy. Dos Batos is disappointingly un-yummy. I think the wood-fired concept is interesting, but if it doesn't add flavor and just makes me stink like a campfire when I leave, I have no reason to go back. read more

BEST TACOS IN AUSTIN. Yeah I said it. Fight me. They're a decent walk from my house, so when it's nice outside I'll walk there 2-4 times a week. At one point, both of the women who usually work the register had my order memorized. I only get one thing when I go there. A Pirata on a corn tortilla and a fountain drink. Queso if I'm with other people. Their queso is very unique, not the Velveeta and Ro-Tel that you'll get at lesser places around town. They use a different kind of cheese and season it very well. It's not the kind of queso that needs guacamole to be worth it(like at a certain overrated café); it stands on its own. They make their flour tortillas from scratch and they're very good. I'm trying to cut down on white flour, so I get my tacos on corn, which are also very good, but I don't know if the corn tortillas are made from scratch. THE best part about Dos Batos is their wood fired beef. It's juicy and smoky and savory in every way I want. It's topped with just the right amount of cheese and avocado to compliment without overshadowing the meat. Their iced tea is also very good, which is a nice bonus at a taco joint. The mural on their wall is gorgeous. They've got three TVs that are usually playing one sport or another, but they're quiet so you can still sit and talk. Sometimes they'll be playing Spanish language versions of Beatles songs and 2000s emo music on their speakers (also not too loud), which I just think is neat. I decide on Dos Batos based off of some very positive yelp reviews. Some people complained about the atmosphere here but I found it adequate for a place that only serves breakfast and lunch. The menu is very simplistic which is fine with me because they have a veggie taco that is quite good. I was accompanied by three omnivores who all said that there food was very good. I believe they all got steak tacos and tortas. I ordered the ostin with no queso. Comes with a small amount of chips and is very large for a taco. Had good flavor, but nothing out of this world. I also like the salsa bar they have ( salsas weren't great ) which contains many salsas and also onions, pico, cilantro, etc. The only reason I would deducte two starrs from Dos Batos is that $8 just seems really steep for a taco which I could eat two of. read more
