When I was 7 years old I was told, after singing my heart out in a recital, that I was not a good singer and should never do it again. That story got repeated to me over and over again. And I believed it and told myself and my voice that it sucked. And I have not been singing for almost 30 years. That's why I originally signed up to work with Dot. It's a pretty full circle moment because I found Dot on Yelp. I remember my first voice lesson/assessment and not really knowing what would come out of it. And here I am, 6 years later and she's still my coach! Dot is amazing!! Like truly amazing. I'm happy to say that I'm really fortunate and appreciative that Dot is my vocal coach. I have been taking voice lessons with Dot for about a year now, and I highly recommend her to anyone pursuing a career in the entertainment industry! I give such a broad spectrum rather than just recommending for singers because her style and approach to teaching is one that not only hones in on the usage of the voice, but also the soul, mind, and body which are extremely important to becoming a stunning entertainer in all fields. I came to Dot as a professional dancer and I've noticed a drastic improvement not only in my singing, but also in my dancing and my ability to command an audience with confidence and charisma. I have gone through a couple of different voice instructors before, and this time was incredibly different! I can't stress the level of skill that Dot has. I learned so much in the first lesson than I learned at all my lessons with other instructors combined. She teaches way more than just singing. She teaches everything that goes along with singing - performance, connection, awareness, mind, body, and soul. She also records every lesson and gives you a CD at the end. She has worksheets and different tools to help you track your progress. Her lessons are very structured and there is no time wasted. I have trained with many different instructors over the last ten years and even achieved an associates in vocal studies at an acclaimed LA music school, however I still felt that I had not fulfilled my vocal potential and was searching for further studies... I have known Dot as a friend and mentor for four years. Dot takes a "whole person" approach to singing in which the mind and soul come before the voice. This is the best philosophy for me to commit to as an artist and singer. While Dot is very proficient in vocal physiology and music theory, technical prowess is a destination and not a bland curriculum. Dot records a custom curriculum of vocal exercises during each lesson for the student to work on during the following week. I sing professionally and, like many of Dot's students, have achieved some success. I am still excited to continue growing with Dot. Tiger Woods has a golf coach, and it's not because he can't play golf. Anybody who is shopping for a vocal coach as they would a painter or a carpenter . . . someone to produce a bounded result in a set amount of time . . . can still benefit from working with Dot. I paid $150 for a first lesson that started 10 minutes late. Then 10 minutes in, we almost called it quits. Dot has a strong personality. She is a nice girl who means well but she is a little manic. We jumped around a lot and I left feeling that I learned nothing. She will say her coaching style transcends the standard "sing from your diaphragm" advice and her CORE program is the hot ticket. Dot said I didn't need much work, just ironing out some things. Then on my way out she said "maybe you're not ready for this [my program]. I told her that remark was a little condescending and she quickly apologized. I later emailed her a song and asked for her opinion. She has not responded. I think this is a tad unprofessional. Any response you get from her will be from one of her cronies. In fact, i emailed her asking for a concession. I thought "maybe i was to critical" and "maybe i should give her another try". However, at $150 per 50 minutes, i couldn't justify it. I even felt bad about my review of initially a 3... I felt bad i thought there was a chance i was missing something or that a 2nd lesson would be different. I wrote her and one of her office volunteers wrote me back. I asked for a one year rate (if you are going to work with someone a lot, why not ask for volume/commitment discount), I even offered to remove my 3-star review thinking she would want to start on new terms. One of her staff wrote back calling me manipulative and approached me as a condescending life coach. I've since reduced my review to a 1! Dot is 1/3 Therapist, 1/3 Spiritual Guide and 1/3 Singing instructor. We spent more time talking about chalkras and energy and being grounded than anything else. I know there are people that will defend this style.. I usually love unique style but at $150 per 50 minutes.. I would rather have this person be a solid, hard-core vocal coach who maximizes our time. UPDATE: I JUST RECEIVED A CALL FROM DOT AND SHE THREATENED ME WITH HER ATTORNEYS! I walked into Dot's studio feeling like I was incapable of realizing my dream of being a singer, and even more incapable of my bigger dream of being a singer with freedom in my heart, body, mind, and soul. By the time I came to Dot, I hadn't performed in years and I couldn't even call myself a singer out loud. My issues, although certainly I had plenty of room to grow technically speaking, were mostly emotional blocks.
