I was looking for a bite in the downtown area with someone and at 8.30pm is the worst time to be hunting for a bite. Unlike the Toronto area that has night owl establishments prepandemic open from 11pm to 2am, Guelph does not offer these services. So one of the few places open was this establishment, when you walk in, you're invited by a hot serve bench, ayce options starting at $4 (if you est two kinds it goes up to $5 and incrementally increases by $1 with more selection. I did not try this. There are some seatings around for 2 and 4 patrons. We ordered the red bbq pork with pineapple and baby bok choy with rice. The rice tastes like it was recooked from yesterday (not spoiled but certainly would not last night -could be from sitting on the rice cooker all evening), the bok choy some had some...squishy sides and it could just be bruising from handling, it was garlicky and slightly over cooked. The red bbq was edible, more on the sweet side. The whole variety came up to be $20 easily feeding 3 to 4 people. I am an Asian patron, ordered in english, maybe I'll try in Cantonese next time? Its definitely a hidden gem if you're looking for a $4 bite that's an ayce Canadian-Chinese, as an alternative to pizza, burgers, poutine, sandwiches... We've been to Double Dragon a few times now and WOW I could still be eating the leftovers from our first visit. The food is pretty solid for your typical takeout Chinese restaurant. The menu is filled with takeout staples like chop suey, lo mein, fried rice, more rice, meat and vegetable mains, and some Szechuan dishes. Honestly, I don't know where they keep all the food in this restaurant because their menu might as well be War & Peace. As the heinous herbivore of the group, I can't tell you much about the meat dishes, but I've tried enough of the vegetable dishes to tell you that you can safely order takeout for your plant-based compatriots. If meat-dishes are still your thing, the Stir Fried Beef Udon Noodles are a favorite at my house -- as are the Jar Doo Chicken Wings. We haven't tried the counter buffet yet, but it seems to be pretty popular with walk-ins around dinner time. It changes pretty frequently but everything looks great. Aside from the variety, the best thing about Double Dragon is the service. The woman behind the counter is always incredibly friendly and has even offered us tea and snacks/appetizers while we waited on our order to be ready. I don't know how she does it, but she always manages to pick something delicious that we haven't had before. I've eaten at this place many time and the trick is to stick to the menu. the buffet probably pays their rent but isn't great. Unfortunately, the cooking can be inconsistent. There is one cook here who produces excellent quality wok cooking, as good as any place in toronto. The other cook is not so great. My favorite dish is #42. Fried Beef Chow Fun, and it ranges from outstanding to borderline edible depending on who cooked it. I usually substitute shrimp for the beef since my family don't eat meat. Last time I ate it there was so much oil (or whatever it it. it gets hard when you refrigerate it) that i ended up throwing it out, but when its good its crazy good. The outstanding quality of this dish is the noodles. If they were more consistent i might even give them 5 stars by pretending the buffet table doesn't exist and only thinking of my favorite dish. I eat here every year when our band is on tour. I always walk in, get 2-3 selections of protein, some noodles and rice, and a drink. I pay with a 5 dollar bill and have gotten change back. It's so cheap. The food quality is average Chinese takeout, but that's often what i'm looking for when I go to these places. The older lady, who I assume owns the place, is very lovely and has to put up with a lot of shit from drunk idiots. She is patient and understanding. Always tip here, they deserve it. read more

I used to get Double Dragon regularly and it was okay for cheap late night food. Tonight I got it on my walk home from work and it was so repulsive, I left it at the side of the road and got food a couple doors down instead. The meat was so dried out I couldn't even chew through it, and the portion sizes were so small compared to what they normally give, I ended up spending more just to fill the container. I imagine because it was a steady drunken Friday night, the lady assumed I was also drunk and wouldn't notice the small portions. Not worth the money even if you think it's cheap. We went to the Dragon today after visiting The Baslica of our Lady. It was a road trip for my 85 year old mother. We walked in and were greeted by a very friendly women. I turned and looked over at the buffet and thought O.K. lets try it! What a horrible mistake. We had to decide between a foam container and or a plate to eat off of. Every thing was either cold, rock hard, or absolutely tasteless. Had to ask for fork and than knives, salt and pepper and than plum sauce and we got one each. The plastic cutlery was useless as you needed a serrated chefs knife to cut through the food it was so old and rock hard. I swear it was left over from last week and re-heated. The price was certainly right at $1.00 per item but I didn't eat anything! What a waste of 12.00 bucks. Never will eat there again! worst food I ever had. read more
