The ranch was founded by hard-working Stephen & veterinarian June Konz in 1961. The present gorgeous large log cabin lodge and all its furniture was self-built by the Konz family between 2000-2008, and is now run by their eldest daughter Kathy (Konz) McKay, husband Brian McKay, and son Stephen McKay. This is the real deal when it comes to western ranches. They raise their own longhorn cattle. You couldn't ask for more ! My wife and I took two of our grandchildren to the ranch planning to spend three days from Thursday, July 31st 2025 to Sunday August 3rd 2025, and ended up extending our stay to August 4, 2025 because our grandchildren had so much fun. What can kids do at K-Diamond-K ? Read the signs and look at the pictures included with this review. This is "real" ranch life with a host that is brimming with smiles and spirit. Kids can rise at 7 am (Don't worry, your excited kids will be waking you up !) to feed the baby animals and gather some fresh eggs from the chicken coop. Then they can accompany owner, Kathy, on her ATV to the ranch's lower valley to milk Kathy's cow Rosebud. Rosebud delivers 3 gallons of milk every morning and every evening, and you will become an expert milker after a short time. Then around 7:30 am, the kids can accompany Kathy on her ATV to round up the ranch's ~50 horses that have been grazing in the lower valley overnight and herd them back to the corral by the lodge. Breakfast is served at 8 am. After breakfast, your kids can brush and love-on a horse and go for a horseback ride on the ranch's 1,600-acre property at 9:30 am or enjoy a completely different ranch activity. Lunch is served at 12:30 pm. Each day is spent doing "exactly what you want to do". The ranch has all the facilities and gear you need for any activity you desire (riding boots, hats, gloves, ropes for roping, biking, fishing, archery, a pickle ball court and a basketball hoop, or just plain relaxing on one of the ranch decks, or on the front lawn lounge chairs). You get three delicious meals a day and will never be hungry. Kathy, cook Chloe, and wranglers Madeleine and Evelyne truly worked as a team during our visit. By the way, the cream in your coffee and the ice cream dessert you enjoy at meal time all come from Rosebud ! So, if you haven't made ice cream before, you can see how its done ! Our grandchildren immediately loved feeding the miniature pigs, milking Rosebud twice a day (they had never milked a cow before), and accompanying Kathy on her daily ritual of herding the horses to the corral in the morning and back to the valley in the evening. They also very much enjoyed the large outdoor trampoline in front of the lodge. We went horseback riding, fishing at Swan Lake, visited the ranch's abandoned gold mine, panned for gold, spent time in the petting zoo, and enjoyed mountain biking. We also played many fun games in the lodge. The kids particularly liked scrabble and the foosball and air hockey tables in the basement. Every evening after dinner, the kids would go to the outdoor trampoline, play games, and sit around the large outdoor campfire to make smore and identify the planets and constellations with the help of our phone's "Skyview" app. Our grandchildren also made some new friends at the ranch and exchanged emails with them to hopefully see them again on a future visit !

During our stay, food was mediocre at best, as the weeks progressed, less and less of it was cooked at dinner time, good choices decreased. At check out time, the owner then decided that the negotiated price for the stay was not enough and tried to raise our final payment. This due to the fact that for half our stay we used twice the rooms. The main hall was dusty and there were a lot of flies. Garbage cans were rarely emptied. Disgusting place. Coffee starts around 6a, and we brought our own wine for pre-dinner drinks. No free organized activities, but I really enjoyed the kayaking tour; we also rented an ATV for the day to tour the valley w the whole family (visited orchard, old schoolhouse, etc), I did horseback riding half-day, took the blue bus (free for ranch guests) upvalley to hike the Agnes Gorge trail, and did a lot of reading, hanging out w the toddler, and digital detoxing (although the ranch house did receive the WiFi in the parking lot during our visit!) Husband and in-laws found great fly fishing in the river across the street from the ranch, and enjoyed the easy option to rent a bike from the ranch to head to other fishing spots. Toddler-specific info: she loved walking around the ranch and seeing the pigs and horses, playing on the playground, talking to other kids. We brought our own toys (magnatiles, crayons etc) for inside time which was helpful. Wish I had brought blackout curtain alternatives to keep the downstairs bedroom darker for naptime, although it was fine. Washing machine in the ranch house was out of order (we didn't plan to use). Bus ride to ranch from ferry landing to ranch was 30 min (entertainingly bumpy for toddler). Emailing ranch was very helpful for answering Qs!

The rest of this review is focused on my interaction with the owner Don, and not the guides (who were very pleasant fellas). Don handled the paperwork and showed my partner and I how the snowmobiles worked. Then we got on our own snowmobiles to get started, and this is when Don started yelling at me. First of all, to start this snowmobile you have to pull up the kill switch. Those little knobs pull up by like one tiny centimeter and maybe if you rode it everyday you can tell by eye if the kill switch is up or down. Well I couldn't tell and I assumed I had to pull up the knob so I tried, and Don started yelling at me IT'S ALREADY UP WHY ARE YOU PULLING IT, IT'S ALREADY UP! Then I tried to turn the key in ignition but it didn't start because I didn't flip the parking brake. Then Don started yelling again "YOU ARE STILL IN PARKED, FLIP THIS THING. DON'T YOU LISTEN?!!" Now, in Don's instructions he said almost in his exact words" this is the parking brake and you don't have to worry about it". So hey Don I listened to you and didn't worry about it, guess you need better instructions. Maybe Don had a bad day and was frustrated, but no amount of frustration justifies yelling that way at others. Oh and we paid for a 4 hour ride but got only 3 hours of actual ride time. And no we weren't late. If you really want to go snowmobiling, I'd recommend checking out options near Leavenworth. The prices are similar if not cheaper than Chewack, views are just as good and the staff a lot more pleasant and professional.

Pay Me!". Because of the Spokane fires, we had to evacuate and found a room a long way from home at Sun Mountain Lodge. We booked two nights, though decided to leave early as an emergency to return home and try to save what we could despite the risks involved. When checking out after the first night, we were hit with an "early departure fee" equal to the second night's rate. Front Desk couldn't help. So I wrote the general manager appealing this fee and asked for some consideration and empathy for our situation. Crickets. Nothing. Not even the simple courtesy of a response. Sometimes a business must decide if it will do the right thing. Failing to respond in any way, Sun Mountain management demonstrated doing the right thing is an illogical and unwelcome facet of their business philosophy of "We don't care. Pay Me!". So hold onto your wallet if you ever stay there. Though located in a beautiful environment, Sun Mountain Lodge and its business practices are far from hospitable.
