I go to the San Mateo Dough Zone often, so I had high expectations visiting the Happy Valley location. The food absolutely lived up to the name, but the service blew me away. Having a doughzone so close is dangerous. This place to me is like Ding Tai Fung lite. Cheaper, more accessible, much less wait time. Came in on weekend for lunch and it was definitely a 40 min wait, but then literally no one on a Tuesday night for dinner. Somehow, the time for the food to come out was about the same. You get a few that come out quick, then a few that took long enough for me to notice it, and then always a few where you wonder if they forgot your dish. Even when there was no one else in the restaurant. The XLB and pot stickers are all super solid, not quite Ding Tai Fung quality, but at these prices and wait times they are great. Qbao's are delicious. I think the noodles are honestly slept on. They all have great flavor, super bouncy noodles, and honestly come in a size that you can easily finish on your own or still big enough to split in case you wanted to try another flavor. I also think the pork wonton's with chili sauce are also super slept on, the sauce is oddly sweet, but honestly I love that. Service here can be hit or miss. They don't really do a each table gets a specific server system, at least that hasn't been my experience. You'll get some food runners, and you can usually just flag anyone down to get what you need. But it does mean things can slip through the cracks if you don't have one person keeping an eye on the list of food ordered for the table or you have multiple servers checking in on you to see if you got all your food even though you just told the server 3 min ago you were still missing something. All in all, this place is phenomenal and approachable. I will be back, maybe not on the weekends though, it's not quite worth all that. read more

The pan fried bao buns are great. I like ordering multiple dishes and they all come out as soon as they are ready. I've been to this location three times now, all on a Sunday afternoon/evening with plenty of open tables. Inside is very spacious with lots of natural lighting. At one visit, the workers were very helpful and informed us of the 20% automatic gratuity involved when we came with a big party and added more people in addition to double checking with us the amount of food as there were multiple people attempting to place orders. The service was unfortunately lacking at our last visit when they only checked in on us when we were practically finished eating (not sure if it was intentional or not). The dan dan noodles are my favorite. When I'm in the mood for soup I get the spicy (ma la) noodles, which taste like the dan dan but with broth. I also really like the kale salad with sesame dressing. The pork & crab xlb came out hot and juicy, my boyfriend noted an improvement in taste from our other visits! The chive dumplings are huge but I've had better elsewhere. The pork wontons in chili sauce are very disappointing, especially if you've had the ones from Din Tai Fung. The service is always very quick when I stop by without a reservation. This is located outside of Clackamas mall so there is lots of parking available. Inside isn't as pretty as the original location, but it is very spacious with many tables. Their menu is straight forward and easy for those who have never been in before. this was my first time at this location, second time at dough zone. it's nice to have one in the mall! the portion sizes are pretty small so we ended up getting 3 more dishes. the service was pretty quick and everyone was very polite. there's tons of seating and no wait at all. we ate at 5pm and only a third of the restaurant was full. the pork xlb was my favorite. the skin doesn't tear easily so it doesn't get stuck to the basket and the flavors were flavoring. i found the rice and noodles to be pretty bland and i wish they had meat and vegetable. i usually like to order a veggie on the side, but they only serve salad style vegetables which is a bummer because i wasn't in the mood for any of those. the wontons were pretty good too but i expected the sauce to be a little spicier? we also ordered beef pies which took super long to come out (the worked warned us though, so we expected it. that wasn't an issue with us) but when we got them they ended up being not good so the wait was not worth it i would def come back here for the xlb tho! read more

Whoa. I'm impressed. The location that used to be a CPK is now a source for excellent dumplings! The interior space is enormous and the entrance can be a little awkward to find (look for the revolving door) but the food is really good. We weren't expecting much from a chain at the mall and were really pleasant surprised. Promptly greeted by a series of friendly employees who were able to locate which items on the menu are vegan, the server even checked in the back on ingredients for the green onion pancakes and then starred each item on the paper ordering menu that we could eat. Sadly no bao or soup dumplings without meat, but the steamed dumplings and potstickers were delicious. Thick hearty dough and a super tasty filling. Huge interior with tons of seating. If I could give a negative I would. The service is thé worst I have ever seen as a traveler. The attitude from the servers, has been a nightmare and you would get better service from toddlers. The food by the time it arrives is cold and spice does not exist here. The soups are watered down and you are better drinking a bowl of dirty water. Dough Zone is always a reliable place for some Chinese comfort food, and it's so convenient that they opened up a location on the east side of the greater Portland metro area. Service here is a bit slower than the other locations I've been to, but they're nice. When I came here, I ordered a variety of XLB, dumplings, and wontons, as well as some soup, scallion pancakes, and banana pancakes. The quality was just as good as the other locations--very consistent quality. And, the portions were good. Highly recommend if you want some casual Chinese comfort food. read more

Had a wonderful dinner at this location. The staff was super accommodating for my stroller even though the restaurant was busy and full. They brought me a high chair and menu right away. I was able to order quickly and the food came promptly. The restaurant was loud but my baby was ok with that and he ate everything I ordered. A little light on flavor and small portion. The soup dumplings were best, larger and had a lot of soup and flavor. I will have to say they might be better than DTF even if the outer dough is a little bit thicker. We also tried the pan fried win ton which were fire. They have teas more than average choices, we picked the chrysanthemum. The prices were great, especially the quality and taste...this place is between a 4/5 stars. My partner and I had been looking forward to this place opening for a long time, as we love soup dumplings and were VERY excited to try this place! Unfortunately our experience was less than stellar. We went on a Saturday, around 145pm. The restaurant was half full. We were greeted upon entering and brought to a table, and asked if we had been there before. We let them know we hadn't, and were brought a paper and told we could pull up a digital menu. They also brought us two glass of luke warm tap water with no ice. I don't mind digital menus at all, but luke warm tap water was....ehhh....not the best start. All of the tableware, chopsticks, plates, spoons, cups, ect are plastic...which is fine, but felt a bit cheap given the interior looked nicer and clashed a bit with the vibe it felt like they were going for. We had numerous people waiting on us, so not really a single server. We ordered multiple dishes (seen in my images), and they were okay (seriously, nothing was bad at ALL, but all of it reminded me of what I often steam for myself that I buy frozen from the Asian market). What concerned me was after ordering two of my dishes came instantly. Literally. It wasn't sixty seconds. They read the ticket and brought ALREADY prepared scallion pancakes and the spicy beef wrap that either was sitting made or was popped in a warmer. The texture was slightly off and parts were warm and parts were just room temperature. It had very little flavor and like a lot of the food was just....bland. The soup dumplings needed seasoning IN the filling. Yes, you are expected to dip them in soy and vinegar, but the filling was rather bland, and that came across in their dumplings too. They weren't bad, they were just...okay. It reminded me of the kind I get frozen in a big bag at Costco. We spent about 60 bucks for a two person meal. We weren't expecting a Din Tai Fung quality meal...but I personally felt I could make a better meal at home with the dumplings I steam from my local H-Mart. It was also a shame that since we never really had a single server, if there was an issue there wasn't a single person to address it with, and half of the time the staff wasn't available and was in the back unless they were bringing out trays to multiple tables, only to drop them off and disappear after reading the tickets on the edges of the tables. The service could use some work in my opinion. I don't think we'd go back, if it remains as it is. read more

I came here with my Mom - service was very nice - young staff who are very sweet. The place is really lovely as well - nice decor. They are definitely shaping themselves after a Din Tai Fung kind of vibe. You put in your order on a sheet that has all of their menu items. The portions are quite small. We ordered a beef noodle soup and it was teeny tiny - it's a dish that is usually a hearty size at most Chinese restaurants. The dumplings were pretty good. It's a good option if you're craving dumplings. I would say that it is good - not great. There is an old joke from Annie Hall where two elderly women are complaining, "Boy, the food at this place is really terrible." The other one says, "Yeah, I know; and such small portions." While I hesitate to quote Woody Allen, it is what came to mind while dining at Dough Zone. However, let me be clear, the food is definitely not awful; it is simply mediocre. And the serving sizes are smaller than my favorite dim sum restaurants in town. But, guess what else was smaller than expected... the bill. This restaurant recently opened in Clackamas Town Center (one of the outer restaurants), so it is easy to access and the dining area is spacious. So we had no issue getting a table and service was perfectly fine. It was all just a bit blah. We ordered a bunch of items: Green Onion Pancake, Pork XLB, Pan-fried pork buns, Pork & Shrimp boiled dumplings, and spicy Ma La Noodles. It was all consumed and we felt fine, but none of it was memorable. If I am in the area, I would give it another shot, especially for a quick lunch, but it isn't a destination restaurant or in the regular rotation for me. read more

She initially pointed us to a table, then abruptly changed her mind and directed us to another. When she brought over a high chair and my mom tried to adjust the seating, she snapped, "Hey, what are you doing? Hey! Hey! I'm talking to you!"
