Janae was such a calming and guiding presence through my pregnancy and labor/delivery! My husband and I are first time parents, and I knew I wanted a doula to guide us through the pregnancy/delivery/postpartum, and help advocate for me in the delivery room if needed. From the moment I met Janae I felt at ease and in good hands! She has been so kind and knowledgeable throughout this journey, directly giving us the tools and information we needed to prepare. This saved us some of the mental energy and stress that comes with the overwhelming amount of information you can get during pregnancy. She was also responsive, especially during the last few weeks of my pregnancy (when I was overdue and almost induced) and into my initial contractions at home. I also want to note that Janae was very COVID conscious, continuing to mask every time we met and in the delivery room, which was important to us and greatly appreciated! My labor and delivery ended up happening very quickly, but having Janae there throughout (whether on the phone or in person in the delivery room) brought me and my husband comfort that all was going to be ok even when things felt overwhelming (and painful!). I really enjoyed having her there to chat with and guide me through different positions as I got my epidural, rested, and waited to dilate. I especially appreciated her support in the immediate postpartum, where I was able to text her as I struggled with breastfeeding, and at our postpartum home visit where she continued to offer emotional support as I adjust to feeding my newborn and other issues. Janae has a warm and inviting presence that immediately drew me in from our first meeting. She made me feel heard and that she understood the heart of the birthing experience and support I was hoping to have. The prenatal visit was insightful and practical. I will never forget seeing what 10cm looks like in real life! Of course I went into labor in the middle of the night, and Janae was attentive and responsive. She was calm and supportive throughout labor and made helpful suggestions to the nursing staff to advocate and move things along when labor stalled. The nursing staff mentioned to me multiple times how impressed they were with Janae. She delivered beyond expectation We are probably a difficult profile of client: - we didn't know how our delivery experience would go since we are first-time parents - we needed someone who would be rigorous in their advice because we are obsessively data-driven Janae was very comfortable with both the research aspect and with practical advice. First she is extremely knowledgeable about the birthing process, the practices of various hospitals in the Bay Area, and tips/tricks. She helped us anticipate multiple steps ahead. she created a planning for us and helped us think about things to take care of, the options available, how to assess each option etc. She offered to visit us at home, at the hospital and on site and made us feel comfortable to ask questions. She has significant experience but doesn't impose herself. She always made us comfortable to decide without deciding for us. She also made herself available on short notice and with great flexibility. We went for a routine check at the hospital and were told that we would have an emergency delivery 1 month before due date and called Janae in panic at 1am, desperate but fully expecting she would be asleep. she not only picked up but actually drove 40 min to come spend the evening with us. After going through such an intimate journey with her, Janae is someone I will always have fond memories of for the rest of my life. This review is long overdue. I hired Janae in March 2021, and she was my birth doula for my son's birth in May 2021. Janae was my birth doula. I am a first time mother, and as a black woman, it was important for me to have woman of color (specifically, a black woman) to be my doula. I was very aware of how black women were/are treated in healthcare, and I wanted someone to advocate for me and help me navigate this new journey. Janae was responsive via email, and I liked how her emails included a helpful, mindful quote. As the big day got closer, she gave tips about eating dates and raspberry leaf tea to soften my cervix. She encouraged the use of an exercise ball and cat max cow poses for stretching. She also taught me how to use a TENS unit. My birth plan included non-medicated vaginal delivery. I also did not want to be induced. However, my son was a week late and I had very low amniotic fluid. It was strongly recommended that I be induced. Janae was very calm and told me how to advocate for myself during this time. Texting and chatting with her aloud me to stay calm. Janae was on standby via text, and when it was go-time, my husband text her, and she was at the hospital in under an hour. When my contractions came, she reminded me to breathe and not tense up; she truly helped me persevere and power through! Hiring a birth doula was something I'd do all over again. I was on the fence about whether to hire a doula for my first birth, but working with Janae was the best decision I made. Not only is she extremely calming and confident, but I underestimated how valuable her guidance would be not only for my unexpected emergency induction, but also before and after my birthing experience. She gave me the tools I needed to feel confident to push back on an even earlier induction and to be as mobile as possible during my labor, despite being hooked up to an IV. She also helped guide me through different options for how to encourage my breech baby to flip beforehand. The counter pressure and comfort measures she taught my partner and I helped me avoid an epidural as well as having the hospital break my water. All her guidance - by phone and an in person - was invaluable. Having someone like Janae who I could trust walk us through the birthing process relieved so much stress with all the information on the internet. What set Janae apart from the many other doulas I interviewed is that even though she may have disagreed with some of my hospital's practices, she did not try to stoke distrust of the hospital, which would have created additional anxiety for me. I vetted every medical intervention suggested by the doctor and nurses by her, and when she disagreed, she was very gentle and constructive about how I could ask for alternatives. She worked really well with hospital staff and I felt like the nurses and doctors were more hesitant to suggest unnecessary interventions because she was there. Janae is a valuable educator and advocate. Nobody else in the room- not the nurses, nor my very supportive and informed partner- could have played the role she did. Lastly, I believe strongly that my breastfeeding got off to a strong start because of her recommendation for me to start expressing colostrum before my birth and educating me on basics to establish my milk supply that were not available from most resources I sought out. I was a ball of nerves when I first met with her as I was embarking on my first pregnancy. I'm a first time Dad and leading up to the birth was stressful! I wanted to support my wife as much as possible, and I knew that I was uninformed about the birth process, both in general and at UCSF Mission Bay. I was excited to hire a doula (they statistically improve birth outcomes), but I knew that it'd be tricky to find the right fit for us. We could tell right away that Janae was the right doula for us. My wife and I are evidence based decision makers, and we didn't want a lot of things that other doulas were offering. Janae had the perfect supportive presence, but never pushed anything on us -- instead giving us positive affirmation and clear information. Janae empowered us to make good decisions, and was always deeply grounded. Before the birth Janae taught us several techniques and labor positions to help my wife labor. I knew that I could provide my wife with support, but I also knew that someone with Janae's experience could provide something we couldn't bring on our own: the confidence that comes from experience. Early labor was confusing and stressful. My wife labored at home for 24 hours and hardly dilated during that period. This was stressful and demoralizing, but Janae was with us via text and phone to help us stay afloat. Janae met up with us once we were admitted, and had worked with the labor and delivery nurse (Heidi) and they worked together as a support team. It was meaningful to me to be with my wife for each contraction, but I also was happy to have a great team that I trusted when I needed to step away and use the bathroom, order food, or rest up. This was also thanks to the whole team at UCSF, but we might have veered pretty far off of our initial birth plan without having the prep as well as real-time support from Janae. Janae was absolutely AMAZING. From our first phone call she made me feel confident about my pregnancy. She answered my questions before I asked them and made me comfortable asking questions I thought were silly. This was my first pregnancy and with the pandemic I was so overwhelmed and worried about everything. But she was always just a text away and offered a lot of reassurance. She offered her support from home when I started my labor and wanted to be alone. As the process continued (I labored for 88 hours) she came to our house and sat with me, breathed with me, and talked me through the pain. Once I finally went to the hospital she was checking up on me regularly and gave me such good advice about my complicated labor. I really felt like she had (and still has) my back. While pregnant, I was undecided about going the unmedicated birth route. A friend shared her second birth experience and how she had an easy labor with the help of a doula. She then referred us to Janae. We met Janae for a consultation and easily felt comfortable and at ease with her. She explained the process very well and answered all of our questions. Logistics were great but the good vibes we got from Janae was the deciding factor. I mean, you have to really jive with someone who will be there supporting you through one of the most vulnerable moments in your life! Meeting Janae helped me solidify my decision to have an unmedicated birth with confidence. For our second child, we weren't sure if we wanted or needed a doula. We did it without one for our first child - why need it now? Eventually, we decided on trying it out and we are so happy Janae was available - it made a WORLD of difference! It started with a consultation and Janae really got our heads and hearts ready for the birth. She encouraged us, schooled us, and really asked us what we imagined this birth to be like. She was there for me from then on, I often texted her with my worries and questions about birth. During the birth - her presence was amazing! She not only coached my Mom and my husband, she also had a "magical bag of love" that helped me through each phase of labor - like a literal bag, with stuff that helped me cope with the pain. Even though we had gone through this before and took the classes, it was easy to forget all the things we had learned but Janae was there to guide us. I told Janae that I wanted to wait as long as possible to get an epidural, and with her support I was able to wait until I was 8 cm dilated, I was so close to labor I actually didn't even get the full dose! I don't think I could've done it without her. After giving birth (13 hours compared to about 30 hours with my first!) she was also there for me during recovery. Her mantras, advice and soothing voice were in my head as I tried my best to focus on my recovery while taking care of a newborn. I had an amazing experience with Janae! This was my husband and my first baby and we wanted as much support as possible. We had calls with a few doulas but we gravitated towards her judgement-free tone and experience. Through my pregnancy she was a level head with evidence based guidance. I loved how much I learned from her and how she empowered my husband to be an active participant in the journey. I gave birth at Kaiser Oakland during the pandemic and was lucky enough to have her calming presence in the room with me and my husband. Though I had prepared to receive an epidural, for many reasons it wasn't administered. After 10+ hours of labor I ended up having to pivot - mentally, physically and spiritually - to a non-numb birth. I wasn't set on an unmedicated birth, but I knew I wanted to work with a doula because of the potentially lower C-section rates and having an advocate for unnecessary medical interventions. My spouse and I had spoken to a few other doulas when we were looking, and we decided to work with Janae because we felt she was experienced, we clicked with her, and she was a very clear communicator. I can easily get overwhelmed with information or choices, and I needed someone who could clearly lay out my options and pros/cons with no judgement. During my pregnancy, Janae regularly checked in after my OB appointments and answered questions we had about labor. She also made sure to cover postpartum care. One of the most reassuring things she said was to not worry about labor - that's what she was for - and to rechannel our energy towards making sure we had a postpartum plan. When I found out that I needed to get induced, Janae helped us prepare with options for natural induction and for intervention options that would be available to me at the hospital. She came to the hospital as soon as I was in active labor and immediately was a reassuring presence. She had showed us various comfort measures and labor/birth positions, so I was able to labor and birth the way I wanted knowing all of my options. She never once pushed me to try a different method or technique after seeing what was working for me. As a first time mama, the part where Janae's presence was the most valuable for me was during transition. It never occurred to me that the hospital staff wouldn't be around for the majority of labor and that it was on me to tell them when I needed to push before they would come back to the room. I was told to let them know when I "had the urge to bear down". Huh? How was I supposed to know what it felt like to "bear down"? Luckily, Janae was there and knew to call the nurses back in when I was showing signs of pushing, even though I wasn't sure if the urge to bear down was strong enough to warrant calling them back in. I somehow ended up going without pain meds, but I was about ready to throw in the towel at this point. I probably would have waited a lot longer to call the nurses back in had Janae not been there. Janae visited us a few days after delivery, and we were able to talk through the entire birth experience with her. She filled in a bunch of holes in my memory and told me about some of the amazing things that the hospital team did for me that I wouldn't have known otherwise. I found this visit to be so important - I didn't expect that I would be itching to talk about it and how cathartic it would feel. I am very late for this review but wanted to make sure I came back to show my support of Janae. I had my baby 7 months ago and booked Janae expecting a vaginal birth. I instead had a c-section but she was still able to support me so much postpartum while I recovered. My husband and I recently worked with Janae for our first pregnancy. Janae was incredible and we knew she was the one to work with during our first meeting. Janae met with us over the course of our pregnancy journey 3 times to make sure we had all the information we needed to make an informed birth plan when our day came. Our son came 4 weeks early, and Janae was nothing short of incredible. She was available at all hours and walked us through the entire process of laboring at home. She came to us to help us labor and manage the pain of contractions holistically. When we got to the hospital I'd successfully labored to 8cm at home. When my husband text her to inform her of that I was being taken to the delivery room, she came to the hospital very quickly. She was exactly the support I needed and the encouragement to birth my son in an unplanned unmedicated delivery. She worked so well with the hospital staff and my doctor. I interviewed a few doulas for my first pregnancy, however, Janae gave me the feeling that I would be taken care of. Janae was able to answer all of the questions I had early on. Near the end of my pregnancy, I didn't have any questions, however, Janae would text to check on me and she attended my birthing center, mandatory class. Once I started having contractions early on I asked Janae to come and she was there, and she came back when I was in active labor. It was so nice to work with Janae. She helped us feel prepared and confident for labor and delivery. During pregnancy, Janae was always available via phone if we had concerns. Although my labor didn't go as planned, Janae helped us reason through our options and helped us make decisions. She was very supportive during labor and helped my husband with comfort measures. Janae did an amazing job guiding both my parter and I throughout our entire pregnancy, labor and delivery of our 1st child! She was very caring, professional and informative. Bing that this was my 1st pregnancy of course there were so many questions and concerns I had and she was able to ease my mind and provide me with the emotional support he and I both needed. Janae did a great job making sure I had a natural, comfortable and stress free experience from the moment we checked into the hospital early Sunday morning till the moment I delivered my son. She even made sure I was okay after he was born as well. By staying with us in the delivery room as well as coming by to do a great postpartum appointment. What I loved the most about her was she also played a great role in making sure my family was supported during this process as well. We went over my birth plan and she also did a great job checking on my well being after my doctors appointments.
