At his previous school I was told he was not where he should be academically and I think they had told him too because he lacked confidence in himself, sad, because at the time he was only 5! But as I said, at Bay, things changed. My son started improving and believing in himself because the school allowed him TO BE himself. Teaching is tailored to each student. From the first day of school they learn how to make decisions, and manage their day. That is a life lesson I never learned until I was an adult! Through the years we saw the school improve in every aspect, and grow too! As parents we had a voice, and every time I had an idea or concern I was heard. Any issues were quickly addressed. To be honest, I always felt that my input or two cents mattered. I feel I also have to mention how much we enjoyed all of it's fun activities, our personal favorites are international night, tree lighting ceremony, the peace pole ceremony, the school play, author's tea, the fall festival, birthday walk around the sun, and the Echo Hill trip! So many! We also made great friends along the way and my son has learned from amazing teachers. I couldn't be more grateful. When Covid-19 closed our schools earlier this year I had no idea what to expect from distance learning, but I shouldn't have worried. The teachers at Bay were ready with a vast array of fun and engaging material for their students within 3 days of the school closing. My son saw and communicated with his teacher and classmates, on line, every day. Yesterday my son graduated as a 6th grade student from Bay Montessori School. It was a beautiful celebration of his achievements and he knew it and felt it. The smile on his face was priceless and his self confidence as he walked over to the stage to read his speech was palpable. We will be sad to go but we will never forget the years well spent at Bay. I would not hesitate to recommend this school to anyone.

We have a great staff with little changeover (which certainly benefits the kids) Some of the best teachers and staff - Mrs McGowan and Mrs Hoza (K, with over 30 years experience) Mrs Scott and Miss Michelle (Pre-K) Ms Matari (art) Mrs Rios (Parent Liasion) Mrs Kazim (PTO pres) Mrs Penny (school secretary) Mrs Cherry (counselor) Mrs Wray (library) Mrs Freundel (reading) Mrs Corsey (speech) Our parent volunteers (which includes me!) are awesome. Volunteers help all the teachers and staff - which free's the teachers to focus on the kids. There are plenty of things for volunteers to help with (so keep this in mind with your own childs school) Eva Turner has several after school clubs: Art, Chess Math team, Destination Imagination, Just Say No and Band. We are a Title 1 school - which is great for everyone. The school offers several parent classes every year and activities for families. There are only 2 buses and several daycare vans this year - the rest are walkers. Next year we are getting an additional 140 kids, so there's going to be buses. (but our school will still have less than 500 total) We have recently had upgrades to our school (a beautiful wing including new K and Pre-K classrooms and kitchen) smartboards in the classrooms (what a great concept). Our school is poor, 75% qualify for free lunch and we are always in need of donations. Ooops, now it seems like I writing a bad review but we've been here 5 years so far and I wouldn't change it. if we could.

Today, OLSS School educates grades K-8th, in an environment which teaches the "whole child". The curriculum is rich in math, science, social studies and language arts. It includes Spanish beginning in Kindergarten, which is when it's best to teach any language. Also included is computer keyboarding , Art, Music, Band and PE. There is one teacher per grade, and that class size is small. Students may have an opportunity to accelerate as needed, however the curriculum is advanced and challenging, thus meeting the individual needs of each student. Parents may request a change or identify if a student is having difficulty and each situation is thus addressed as needed. Each child, and their learning styles is considered. It always helps to have parent involvement, as parents know their children from the start. I am a proud parent and volunteer from this school. I have two children who have attended since Kindergarten, and would not send my children anywhere else! Not only are the teachers passionate about teaching their students, but the parents have a sense of ownership and become as involved as they can in many ways. That sense of ownership is pride in our school. Even parents who work full time, find a way to lend a hand, or spread news about our school. Teachers take the time to get to know each student, and thus can make necessary changes and or recommendations in a team approach. OLSS Students learn character that lasts a lifetime. Trust, sharing, confidence, and perseverance are some of the concepts taught. Rules are followed and good behavior is expected. Students learn "old time" skills such as cursive handwriting , which is still important in today's world. The students have morning afternoon prayer time. Students attend Mass (usually on Wed.) and are provided with opportunities to shine in many ways. Some students use their talents in speaking to their peers, which is encouraged during assigned mass times. Each class takes a turn leading the Mass, and this helps children become comfortable reading to others and develops self confidence. Our students wear a uniform each day, which for many is a wonderful and easy way to start the day. Children don't need to wear fancy clothing to be unique. Our students do have "fun" tag days which usually revolve around a theme, and often the dollar or quarter goes to a charity. They participate in many community service projects, many of those will give them memories helping their environment, or those in need. Students at OLSS School know what it is like to "give" and how helping others is part of their helping to do God's work. OLSS Students are successful in community competitions. They have a sense of pride in participation of the County Spelling Bee, Science Fair and other competitions and sporting events. They learn fair play and how to loose as much as how to win. Many of our Alumnus have gone on to successful career paths, and some have shared their experience with our parents and students. We hope to continue to grow our school, to share our strong values with other Christians, and to do God's work to help educate students for a lifetime one at a time through building strong character and leadership.
