A couple of weeks ago it was a friend of mine's birthday. To celebrate, we went to one of his favourite haunts, the Down Under Bar. The Down Under Bar is somewhat synonymous with hordes of overly tanned European backpackers attempting to find someone to snuggle for the night, which is a fair description. We observed many awkward public displays of affection and I'm quite sure the lack of women who permanently reside in Brisbane was a big drawcard for my single male friends. Still, much fun was had observing the blatant promiscuity while dancing to the very random selection of music. As soon as we entered we managed to snag a booth. There was a fairly big group of us so it was useful to have so many seats, intended and otherwise. We took many oh-so-classy pictures of us standing on furniture, then some remained at the booth while others hit the dance floor. I alternated between resting my feet from my evil shoes and rushing to dance whenever a song I just had to shout along to came on. I also managed to have a very slow, embarrassing topple off a stool crashing onto my knees on the concrete floor, despite being 100% sober. The highlight of the night was definitely all of us, even several of the guys who have spent so long building up the facade that they are the epitome of masculinity, singing along to The Venga Boys. It's a great place to go if you're after a relaxed night of enjoyable dancing or if you're looking to meet a friendly backpacker.

Ahh, Down Under Bar, how do I loathe thee? Let me count the ways. Your familiar sticky floors seem to reel me in time and time again and leave me with the familiar taste of vodka and shame. Down Under seems to be the default place for a messy night, where backpackers are plenty and dance-floor groping is a given. Still, on a more messy night I thoroughly enjoy its slurpees and its intoxicating (no pun intended) atmosphere. No matter the night, I can walk into Down Under and walk out with my self-esteem through the roof. Everyone is so messy and friendly and it makes a good pit stop on a token barhopping night. That's without noting the always-current and overwhelming song choices. It can get very crowded but that only aids you in an endeavour to talk to as many people as possible. The last time I was there I engaged in a riveting conversation with a pommy boy wearing a cowboy hat, regaling me with tales of his Australian adventures. Dunder never fails to disappoint. It's closely located across from central train station and is an easy walk from other popular nightlife hotspots in the city. Trouble-making males be warned however, those bouncers know how to sort you out. Down Under is good for a big night out but not for the fainthearted. If you prefer cocktails and highbrow conversation, best steer clear.

Good lunch, food took a little long considering it was pretty empty, but very cool vibes and nice people.

But the layout of the place is even better! It is a basement bar, half of it outside and the other half kind-of-inside. Very spacious, clean and with good selection of beer (albeit mostly mainstream beers, but a lot of them). Very comfortable, with some big TVs and also music. Good people watching too. The food is good, not amazing, but you can't expect amazing in such a central, tourist-y area. I had the wings and they're a solid 8/10, at least. Service was great too. Shout out to Elise behind the bar.

I have been…read morehere a few times, at least when I was previously in Brisbane, namely because I thought that their beer garden was really cool. However, like most of the pubs in the CBD, this one does close quite early (though late enough that I was able to slip in here for a drink one night). There is nothing fancy or flash about this pub - expect the standard beers on tap - no craft beers. It also has a pokies area and a bistro, though there is a pool table tucked away in one corner. The beer garden is pretty cool as well, but unfortunately for the smokers it is not the designated smoking area. During the day it does get fairly crowded (though I have never noticed anybody out in the beer garden, despite it being a pretty nice day), but it was fairly quiet when I was there.

But sometimes it's good to get reckless and a bit silly over some beers and some really, really terrible love music. Irish Murphy's doesn't necessarily have bad music (I'm also a sucker for an accent, especially Irish) but they certainly have the collective crowd keen on getting drunk and roaring along to an inaudible and stereotypically perfect karaoke song. Maybe it's the fact that Irish Murphy's adopts an appearance actually like an Irish pub, but I can't help but have a little fondness for it. I have to search for the fondness a little but believe me, it's there. It's just an ideal place to gather around a table and sling back a few casual (or not so casual) beers and get a little messy and fun. And when you've had a few, who can't join in with the crooning and tuning of the blokes on stage? The beer's fairly cheap, the company's not half bad, and the entertainment isn't sot stale either. I'm not trying to sound begrudging here, because like I said, I do have a soft spot for Irish Murphy's. I just like to be with a larger group of people and get a little silly in the name of fun. If you're after slurry banter and Irish accents, Irish Murphy's is the place to be.

They were super friendly and let you enjoy the space and your company. They serve you water as soon as you are seated and then ask you what you'd like. I had the Lucy while my friend had the Coffee Ale. The sizes come in Pony, Mare, or Stallion! My friend loved the coffee ale. I'm not the biggest beer fan but the Lucy was light. We started to chit-chat with the bartenders and they showed us this chili vodka! He had me at "Chili..." My friend had the Bloody Mary and she kept raving how it was tomato soup for adults. She loved it! The bartender was great and nervous about creating a drink for me. We went with a pineapple chili vodka with a touch of mint. Yum! It needs some fine tuning but the foundation is set. We were having a great time and as if beer to vodka wasn't enough, we moved right along to tequila! Yes, some quality tequila and verdita. I'm a huge fan and they explained to us how quality tequila is for sipping. We didn't want to leave but the time had come. Thankfully, I know I'll be coming back very soon. Thanks for a great Introduction.
