Conveniently nicknamed the 'dub dub' by my friends back in our clubbing days, there are memories there that we will always remember for the rest of our lives. This is a backpacker joint. Jam-packed with people of all ages from all the countries the beautiful world has to offer. Only catch is, you can only get in if you're a traveller or student (ID/Passport required) and if you're a girl. Although we have snuck the odd guy in with a bunch of girls with much success. It helps if you know the bouncer. They play music with the likes of Love Shack, Horny, Addicted to Bass and a lot of songs popular all over the world with the kids in the 90s era. They do go back to Dancing Queen and Mr Wendal as well and boy can you boogy to the tunes of this place. Be prepared to have some form of alcohol spilt on your fancy clothes every time you go there. Be prepared for people dancing on tables (even though they've banned it). Be prepared to body squish your way from the dance floor to the toilets and then back to the dancefloor with very willing body squichers - usually from Braz-eeeel (Brazil) and write a note on the wall to your ex-lover in the toilets and pretty much throughout the whole bar, on the walls, on the furniture... everywhere. Leave your memory here for free. This place will always hold a special place in our hearts, yes it's not posh, it's rather backpackery... but that's how we would like it to stay. Join in the songs with your hearts and hands and sing and dance to the wee hours to an awesome DJ with various glow in the dark articles through his hair. A couple of weeks ago it was a friend of mine's birthday. To celebrate, we went to one of his favourite haunts, the Down Under Bar. The Down Under Bar is somewhat synonymous with hordes of overly tanned European backpackers attempting to find someone to snuggle for the night, which is a fair description. We observed many awkward public displays of affection and I'm quite sure the lack of women who permanently reside in Brisbane was a big drawcard for my single male friends. Still, much fun was had observing the blatant promiscuity while dancing to the very random selection of music. As soon as we entered we managed to snag a booth. There was a fairly big group of us so it was useful to have so many seats, intended and otherwise. We took many oh-so-classy pictures of us standing on furniture, then some remained at the booth while others hit the dance floor. I alternated between resting my feet from my evil shoes and rushing to dance whenever a song I just had to shout along to came on. I also managed to have a very slow, embarrassing topple off a stool crashing onto my knees on the concrete floor, despite being 100% sober. The highlight of the night was definitely all of us, even several of the guys who have spent so long building up the facade that they are the epitome of masculinity, singing along to The Venga Boys. It's a great place to go if you're after a relaxed night of enjoyable dancing or if you're looking to meet a friendly backpacker. read more

Ahh, Down Under Bar, how do I loathe thee? Let me count the ways. Your familiar sticky floors seem to reel me in time and time again and leave me with the familiar taste of vodka and shame. Down Under seems to be the default place for a messy night, where backpackers are plenty and dance-floor groping is a given. Still, on a more messy night I thoroughly enjoy its slurpees and its intoxicating (no pun intended) atmosphere. No matter the night, I can walk into Down Under and walk out with my self-esteem through the roof. Everyone is so messy and friendly and it makes a good pit stop on a token barhopping night. That's without noting the always-current and overwhelming song choices. It can get very crowded but that only aids you in an endeavour to talk to as many people as possible. The last time I was there I engaged in a riveting conversation with a pommy boy wearing a cowboy hat, regaling me with tales of his Australian adventures. Dunder never fails to disappoint. It's closely located across from central train station and is an easy walk from other popular nightlife hotspots in the city. Trouble-making males be warned however, those bouncers know how to sort you out. Down Under is good for a big night out but not for the fainthearted. If you prefer cocktails and highbrow conversation, best steer clear. read more

Comefor the cheap food, stay... because you had one too many. This is the type of place where the drinks are cheap, your feet stick to the floor, the bathrooms are questionable. Friday lunches are $10 but taste great. Moderate but silent leering from the old-man lunchtime crew should be expected. Staff are friendly, service is quick. The down under bar just looks and feel crummy from the instant you lay eyes on it. But that is exactly why it is so popular and well loved. This is not the type of bar I would visit frequently but if you want to have a good (messy) time, the Down Under Bar can be a fun place to drink. You must be a traveller or a student to attend the Down Under Bar, thankfully I have a Canadian passport, so I qualify! The place is very loud and can get very hot and sticky very quickly. Girls BEWARE- the odd traveller may try and be a little too cosy with you so make sure you come in with your best - "get away from me face". The music played here is a variety of pop classics and top 40, this is not really my kind of thing but after a few pints of beer, it is quite a treat. The Down Under Bar is not the type of bar I could visit often, I simply to not have the stamina to control the seediness. 2nd week in Brisbane, and I land at Dunda? I came here on a pub crawl, and this was our 2nd location of the night. I don't understand why this place has good reviews as my experience of it was not that great as the place was kind of grimy and sleazy in my opinion. One thing that really made my time better there were the cheap drinks. I'm a total fan of their affordable drinks as well as their specials! We came on a Wednesday night, and there was just absolutely nobody dancing or anything. I'm not even sure if there was music playing. Down Under promises nothing but a fun, filthy, sweaty night and it delivers every time. I always feel a twinge of hesitation upon entry, but by a few minutes (read: beers) later I'm having the time of my life once again. The 'Dunder' has that easygoing, friendly vibe that only backpacker bars can truly capture and the liveliest dance floor in the city several nights a week. There's also live music and the backpacker classic: wet t-shirt comps on Wednesday nights. Normally when I see a line of people waiting to get into a pub at night my first thought is that I will simply move on to the next place. However this was a Wednesday night, at about 11:00 pm, and I simply could not find a place to have a drink. Still, I looked at the line stretching down Edward Street, and all the teenagers eagerly hoping the the bouncers would let them inside, and decided that I would take my chances elsewhere. However, I still wanted to check this place out, since all I could see was a small, and almost empty bar, from outside (and the last time I was here that was where I had a drink). Anyway, they have the huge room out the back that is set up like an outback Australian pub, which while looked pretty cool, didn't seem to catch my attention all that much. Hey, the staff were pretty cool because I left my glass of water on the bar and she came and looked for me to give it to me, however despite that, there are better places to had a drink in Brisbane. read more

While this place is more commonly known as place for students and backpackers to get drunk every night of the week, in the mornings it is a quiet place open for breakfast. And they do an awesome breakfast. For just $10 you can get a full cooked breakfast of 2 eggs (cooked how you like), bacon, sausage, mushrooms, grilled tomatoes, hash brown, and toast. You also get either tea, coffee, or juice. And it's a decent size serving, and well presented. Available between 7 and 10am. I've stopped in a couple of times on my way from Central Station to work. The only thing that was wrong with the place was they had no Southern Comfort stocked in either bar. This place is not at all for the faint of heart. If you have an appreciation for the dirtier things in life then give this place a go. If not, I recommend staying far, far away. Known for it's wet t-shirt contests on a Wednesday night, or Tuesday's "Ladies Night." (Where guys can get discounts for wearing a dress and/or makeup) Down Under bar is one of the craziest place you could find yourself at in Brisbane. So like I said, if you don't think you can handle LOTS of drunken people, then head elsewhere. A tip for the ladies as well, unless you appreciate the unsubtle moves of a backpacker on the dance floor I would avoid that area at all costs. On the other hand, if all that sounds like fun and getting wild and staying out till 3 or 4am is something right up your alley. Down Under bar is the exact place you need to be. read more

I'm an advocate for any bar with decent drinks but since I enjoy a night on the town with good music, I wasn't impressed with the DJ since he was incapable of mixing one song into another. I think this place could do better with a NEW DJ. The atmosphere was okay but it lacks energy. read more

I've been there twice, the first time was awesome : I met great people and had lots of fun. Though, the bar is very crowded and it was extremely difficult to move and when I was able to, I could feel hands going under my belt. Quite annoying. But all in all, it was still a great night. I decided to go there again a week later with my friends, still very crowded and I noticed that the music was exactly the same at the exact same hours on the exact same order. First down point. We then decided to watch the "wet t shirt contest" (boys in the team ...) and that was a big mistake. This is ridiculous and totally humiliating for women. But whatever, it's their body, they just have no self-esteem and only think about the easy money. Their choice. At that point I was talking to a friend and received a text, what a terrible thing I did by pulling out my phone and checking the text. A security monkey tear my phone out of my hands and kicked me out of the place, I just told him that I would never film people doing these kind of thing, I politely said 'have a nice evening' and walked away. I stayed polite, it was worthless to argue with those proteined brainless guys, I will not come back. Guys, you are not gods, stop thinking so please. I have met security men who were really good at what they were doing, in that place they are just stupid and they kick everyone out. All of my friends have been and for no reason every time. Australia that is something I do lot appreciate about you : we can not feel free and relaxed in bars or clubs, we get kick out for nothing. Seriously packed any night of the week with a different theme. I came here on my first week in Australia and I have never found such an easy time making friends alone. Every night has different cheap drink specials like a different $10 jug of beer or $5 basic. So many cool travelers from around the world, lots of fun games to win bar tabs and always a full dance floor.
