I can't day enough good things about this place. It's super small, so you need to get there early, but it's so worth the wait if you do have to wait for a table. We were able to get right in and waiting on promptly. There was only one waitress when we arrived, but she handled a full restaurant and 5 new tables with ease. This place has so many great and unique options for a decent price. I looked at the menu and knew without a doubt what i was going to order- Creme Brûlee French Toast. This did NOT disappoint. Honestly, this is the best "unique" french toasts I've ever had in my entire life! I ordered a side of fruit and the bf got the Michigan pancakes which also did not disappoint. We got a gift card for the Downtown Cafe from a purchase at Hanson's Running Shop. I'm working summer hours (woohoo!) So we decided to treat ourselves with a late lunch on the gift card. They seem to have adapted well with the social distancing. All employees were wearing masks, and extra tables with umbrellas were set up outside. There were very few tables inside, and just one diner inside. The menu had all of the basics for breakfast, brunch, and lunch. I chose the caramel french toast, which was good but a little soggy. That's always the thing with french toast anyway though right? My husband got a turkey Reuben which he said needed a little bit more flavor but he also said it seemed like it was real turkey being used, not lunch meat, so that's a plus. Overall a fine, average, cute little atmospheric diner in downtown Rochester. read more

Love going here in the summer time so I can take advantage of the outdoor terrace. The inside is a little stuffy and outdated decor. Food is really great. Great reviews brought us in. The reviews are correct! Very small, looks like granny's wallpaper with a warm welcome, promise of quick service and hot food! My chorizo hash was good. Not the best ever, but good. Pumpernickel toast was good. Water was wet, table was tiny, company provided by me was great and manager was present. Well, everyone was available- hard to hide in a place that small. The menu looked good, offering some concocted items not found at your local diner. I would go back. I'm disappointed, this is downtown Rochester and they have a patio and they turn us down with our puppy, they told us that we can't sit because of our dog. Originally a friend and I were going to Rochester Brunch House today, but because downtown had a car show going on, and there was a 40 minute wait, we came to Downtown Cafe instead. My friend lives in Rochester and said it was good, and it ended up being tasty. I had the Creme Brulee French toast, which ended up being more "eggy" than I thought but still good, and it came with (warm!) fruit compote. You also get a fruit or meat side, so I chose Canadian bacon, which ended up being pretty good. My friend got Michigan pancakes which were stuffed with cherries, apples, and pecans, and she liked her meal as well. Prices are reasonable too, my meal was about $9.50 I think. The people working there seemed to know many of their customers by name, which was kind of cool. The menu has a typical range of breakfast fare and my wife an I both decided to have omelette. We use to live downtown and so it was our first time back in two years. We were so happy there wasn't a wait and we got right in to sit down. They are currently updating some interior designs. I like get this place because it's the definition of a hole in the wall, great food and small town diner all in one. The coffee is strong and the staff does a great job of keeping your cup filled. The menu is a good mix of sweet and savory. For a smaller restaurant, the options are plenty. My friend ordered the Creme Brulee french toast and I ordered the Eggs Florentine. After trying bites of both, I can tell you that the kitchen staff takes pride in what they serve. The flavors were perfect. The seasonings were perfect. The presentation was perfect. The cost was possibly $2-3 more than other breakfast spots around, but the extra money is worth it.
