Outdoors in the beautiful days of late spring summer and fall, indoors for those "other" months at City Hall! I can find ALL my grocery needs here, and locally supplied. Every kind of meat: Elk, Pork, Fowl (chicken, turkey, duck etc), eggs, Beef, and even Fish (fresh and frozen) . Fruit and veggies both local and near (BC). I can meet my farmers, talk with them-heck once a year there's an open house to visit their farms-but some have an open invite. Veggies galore!! Everything under the sun! From mushrooms to exotic greens, organic and almost. Every fall it's bursting with abundance, rainbows of beets and carrots, onions, cabbages and cauliflowers of incredible variety. I get my flat cabbages here to make my cabbage rolls. Spectacular quality. No, it's not bargain basement prices, but comparable to the stores but fresher!! Fudge! Popcorn! Gelato! Baked goods...there is every possible variety of booths. The managers of the market work diligently to make sure to balance the wares and ensure quality vendors so there's something for everyone. I never knew I needed City Market in my life until I moved into the Brewery District. I realized then that yes, I do need a coffee shop in my grocery store. Yes, I do need live music in the parking lot and in while I shop for groceries. Yes, I need to have a cup of coffee in hand as I push my cart through the aisles. Yes, I do need fresh squeezed juice and a cafe inside my grocery store. I mean what an amazing grocery store. It has all the things that I do need, and all the things that I don't need (really) but also definitely need - if you get what I mean. Love the inside cafe. Staff are friendly and helpful. They also have great deals on cat litter so my fellow cat parents should pick up some litter here. read more

I remember one of my first visits to the Farmer's market and bringing my niece when there was just one block closed. We bought kettle corn and sat to eat it while a handful of people shopped the vendors. My how things have grown in the over 10 years it's been to now have multiple blocks closed and the bustle of the Saturday crowds of people and dogs. I'm no longer a regular at the market like I was when I lived downtown and it was nice and convenient to walk on a Saturday to buy fresh fruit and vegetables and check out the new vendors. I would also get a waffle from Eva Sweet or a bag of kettle corn. My friend also had a tent selling her jewellery but that did not last long before she moved to another market. Now I go a few times a year to the outdoor market. There are still great vendors to try and buy fresh produce, a sweet treat of cookies, or big cinnamon buns. But it can get crowded to maneuver around others especially on sunny mornings. It's great to see the market thriving and a place to be to stock up on groceries, people watch, or gather with friends. read more

This was my first visit to the new permanent indoor location for the Downtown Farmer's Market. It's just a block or so from the original location across from Canada Place. I've enjoyed this market for years when it was outside on 104th street but for Edmonton it's better to be indoors. The first things I noticed were all of the wonderful smells from fresh baking and spices. Next I noticed the abundance of natural light. Those big windows in the old but refurbished Army & Navy Building really brighten everything up. It wasn't crowded but that's probably because January is a slow month for markets in general. Before we even finished exploring the first floor I noticed an interesting and large elevator. I quickly rounded up the rest of my group and we filed into the man-operated elevator. This was super cool because it has all those old sliding gates that you see in movies set in old buildings in New York or other large cities, a feature that my university aged daughter really enjoyed. At this point I had to admit that I remember man-operated elevators from when I was a little boy: I must be getting old. The second floor had more foods and prepared meals with lots of free samples. There was live entertainment on the first floor but I don't recall if the second floor also had entertainment. I did see lots of chairs so customers can rest up with a meal, a coffee or just visit for a while. We took the elevator back down to the first floor, even though there were large open stairs nearby, because it was just fun to experience this old type of lift and share the experience with others. Eventually our bags got heavier and our wallets got lighter so it was time to go. I know that we will definitely be back, although not every weekend. The new Bountiful Market on the south side is much handier for us. This New Downtown Farmer's Market will be a great amenity for the eastern edge of downtown and the Quarters District. The City Market Downtown has been a fixture in Edmonton since 1903! Who knew? You can read a little about its history here: http://city-market.ca/wp/about/the-history-of-the-city-market-downtown/ I recall it being located on 97th Street when I was a university student back in the day. It was okay back then but I would usually go to the Strathcona Farmers back then. When the City Market moved to its current outdoor location in 2004 it really started to flourish as the premier Farmers Market in the City. It has grown over the last 10 years as has the neighbourhood. If you are a visitor to our City, especially during the summer, then this should be on your must do list! You will find everything from fruits and veggies, to fish, meat, sweets, flowers, crafts, gifts, etc. There will also be programmed entertainment and street buskers. Then there are also all of the cool shops in the neighbourhood! You can also grab some great lunch from the vendors there or get some food/coffee/drinks etc at some of the great businesses! You will find the Farmers Market info booth usually around the centre of the market. they will help you find anything you are looking for or answer your questions. During winter the market moves into City Hall. It's not as big and fun during the winter but it is kind of cool that they hold it there. Bring your skates because you can hit up the skating rink outside of City Hall during your stop! read more

Popped by City Market last Saturday on my way to find the newest Bubble Tea place - also located on 104 Street. I was impressed with the variety of vendors and even noticed that the food truck that sold mini donuts and the like was priced lower than the one I normally attend at St. Albert. What an AWESOME street for the Farmer's Market because there are a ton of little places you can pop into before or after for a bite or a respite from the sun - Blue Plate Diner, Queen of Tarts, Bubble Buzz and a dozen more! The ONLY reason this Farmer's Market location gets 4 stars instead of 5 is that parking is quite difficult downtown and you have to pay to park - Yuck! Definitely worth the visit if you haven't been to this location - though, my heart still belongs to the St. Albert Farmer's Market! read more

I've been downtown quite a bit during the week for school, but I'm never here during the weekend, at least not early in the morning. A months weeks ago I found myself downtown on a Saturday morning, and lo and behold the City Market was going on. First I'll start by saying I love farmer's markets, buy local, support local, it's all good. Second I'll add I simultaneously hate farmers markets because I want to buy everything, and my wallet just isn't that big. I also would have had a lot to carry back on the bus to the southside, so I kept my purchase in check. Generally I thought this was a pretty cool little market. Loved that I could just get off the LRT and be right there. I found there was a nice variety of food, and goods for sale. I got some tropical flavored granola, and some vegan chocolate spread. They were both pretty good. I had this breakfast bowl with eggs and sausage from one of the food trucks. And I picked up some fried green tomatoes from Creole Envie, because well friend green tomatoes are awesome (and they were). I wandered around, heard some music, did some people watching (in a nonstalkery kind of way). All in all a nice way to spend a couple hours on a Saturday. If I lived a little closer I'd probably be here every week. read more

Park in the lot south of the Police Station -- across the street -- parking is free for Farmer's Market patrons. Once parked, go south through the lot/alley and you will see the outdoor stalls in the market. Go around the south side of the building to the west, and across from the Law Courts people will be lining up. Physical distancing is no problem while waiting. Many patrons are masked and all vendors were masked. Most had tap for payment with a few requiring cash. There's an ATM there if you need cash! Coffee and some vendors upstairs -- tables enable physical distancing. Barista is very practiced at helping customers safely and there is plenty of hand sanitizer around. I realize I haven't talked about the vendor offerings, but these considerations are important to me and my friends that were attending with me, so I thought I'd make sure to note how carefully everything was prepared. I'm immunocompromised and felt very safe. Anyway! Overall, the vendors are a cut above what you see at many open markets, with the lovely coffee area, all wood and sunshine, and many familiar favourites as well (tzatziki, pita, and hummus, anyone?). There are several fresh produce vendors with enticing-looking goods, and my neighbour Kuhlmann's was there with a huge space on the ground floor. My only beef is that the Green Onion Man wasn't there, but there was a green onion cake vendor who would probably be just fine... I'm just a little biased in favour of the original. Highlights for me were beer and wine sellers (I wasn't buying, but the option is always nice), a great variety of cheese, and specialty ice cream booths. Dauphine Bakery was there -- I'm glad they survived their move from 104 St and are thriving on the northside -- will be visiting them in their home base soon! read more

By far my favourite farmer's market in Edmonton on a beautiful day, and it's still a great place to visit even if the weather isn't quite cooperating. I love the fact that it's outside, transit accessible, downtown, and filled with people of all walks of life, ages, and lifestyles. I don't go more frequently mainly so as not to spend too much money on awesome finds -- because there's always something on my to-buy list like a new jewelery item or a wrap or a toy in addition to the delicious food to eat right away or bring home. This year I even managed to have my bike tuned up at the market and have truly enjoyed revisiting vendors I had previously purchased lovely items from in the past. This is one of my favourite farmer's markets in town. The outdoor setting can be a wonderful thing on a hot sunny day, or your nemesis when it's cold and raining. But that's what makes this market special. Fresh outdoor air, with Edmontonians milling around, sampling food and beverages from local and BC vendors. The current location along 104 street is perfect as its such a great walking promenade with cute shops and cafes around. It's lovely to see the market bustling with activity, listening to some live music at times, and soaking in some sun on a nice day! My favourite vendors for fruit are Steve & Dan's; for veggies (and beautiful bouquets) Kuhlman's; for anything pork-related Irving's Farm; and for anything chicken related, including fresh eggs - Sunshine Organic Farm! I second Jennie M when she says to bring along your favourite re-usable tote - it will come in handy and helps reduce waste! read more

A good variety of eats, veggies and other merchandise so far but worth a visit again when it fills up more. I really love the building that has been restored for this space! I'm embarrassed to say that I've lived a mere few blocks from the City Market (located on 104th st, north of Jasper during the spring/summer) and I visited it for the first time just last weekend. I knew it would be good, that's why I had never visited it before (that's what I keep telling myself). Anyway, I armed myself up with a big reusable grocery bag and headed down with a wad of cash to spend. I couldn't believe the number of vendors that were available, the array of different products and the fantastic value in all the produce and yummy foods. From fresh pasta, gorgeous well-priced produce, amazing beef jerky and delicious hummus/pita breads, I was able to buy a whole week's worth of groceries at a fraction of the cost while supporting Edmonton businesses. Yay! I loved the "feel" of the city market, they had live music, face painting/balloons for the kids, tons of the street businesses opened up and thriving, food trucks, cute dogs walking about and the crowds weren't insane (and this was at 11AM). Some of my favorite vendors were definitely The Happy Camel, Pasta by Caterina, Bloom Cookies, Heritage Doughnuts and Sundog Organic Farms. I will be back!! read more

May is my favourite time of year - it is the beginning of Market Season! I have been regularly shopping at the City Market for the past five years and have enjoyed seeing it grow and evolve. Each year I am welcomed by many old favourites, but also plenty of fresh faces. Located downtown, parking can be a bit of a hassle. However, it is conveniently located near the Bay/Enterprise LRT Station and many busses pass by this location. There is so much product to be offered at the City Market. Many different produce vendors keep the prices in check and the options open. Other food items to be found include breads, local meat, dips, sauces and desserts, rounding out your grocery shopping for the week. You can also find many talented artisans selling everything from one of a kind clothing, cute little stuffed animals for the kiddies, gorgeous wood cutting boards, delicate jewelry, and so so much more! As well there are the many shops and restaurants that line 104 Street, offering up fresh coffee, delicious brunches, and organic goods. The City Market will definitely keep you busy and satisfied! read more

City market is without a doubt a 5* market in the summer when it's outside. Hands down the premier market, but drops off substantially in the winter when it moves inside city hall. I'd give it a 3 in the winter, so I'm averaging it out to a 4. In the summer I buy almost all my produce here, and a bunch of meat too. In the winter my favourite pork producer, Irvings Farm, drops out of the market so that's a big loss for me. If you haven't tried their bacon you are truly missing out. The winter market still has some top notch vendors such as Prairie Mill bread, and Natures Green Acres, but the market loses a lot of atmosphere compared to the summer. A Saturday morning strolling the outdoor market in the sunshine is for sure one of my favourite things to do in Edmonton, and when the streets fill with people, music, and the smell of delicious food I find it hard to stay away. read more

Veggies, veggies, and more veggies! Oh, and a lot of other stuff too. I really love this Farmers' Market. It's located downtown, entirely outside on a closed-down 104th Street. There's something really nice about strolling through this Farmers' Market on a beautiful day. It's great to meet the local producers and to check out all the fresh food and other great locally-made merchandise. I've seen some really unique fashions here, but they are expensive. You can get the famous kettle popcorn here, but about a month ago, I saw a new kettle popcorn competitor. The original popcorners weren't too happy... I sense a kernel war! The absolute, most amazing potatoes are sold at this Farmers' Market. These yellow, Dutch potatoes are so soft, so creamy--they will melt in your mouth. The couple who sell these potatoes also sell locally-grown strawberries by the bucket. They are so sweet and reminded me what strawberries really taste like again. I definitely recommend coming down to this Farmers' Market. It's a relaxing way to spend your Saturday. If you are looking for meat though, the selection here is scarce; I suggest heading to Old Strathcona's Market, where there is plenty. Also, this market is only open from May 17th through October 11th. But they will be at Churchill Square on Nov 15th. Only a portion of the vendors are there, but it's still a great time, with free coffee and hot chocolate; not to mention, there's live music too! read more

I really appreciate the downtown farmers market for a series of reasons. One is that lots of local farmers come to sell there vegetables, locally raised meats and eggs, and baked goods. There is a good selection of different kinds of produce, including the cheapest portobello mushrooms I've ever seen, and the highest quality asparagus I've laid my hands on. Two is that it has put some serious effort into *atmosphere*. Musicians and performers, and lots of festival like events that go right through the marketplace means that you get entertainment that frequents the area. Chinese festival, pride parade, swing dancers and I'm sure more to come. Three is that the local businesses put out a lot of energy into supporting and working with the market, so you have a great mix of permanent and temporary businesses set up in the area. And also there are the crafters (of which I'm one of them). Local craft mostly (some imports), you can find leather accessories, bird houses, quilts, fine jewelry, clothes and more. This market has the biggest potential to become a really major attraction for the city out of all the markets I've participated in. They close down two blocks, and I bet you that more sections of the city will be closed down to accomodate their growth as time goes by. You need to check it out. read more

If it's summer - better get your ass down to the City Market!! I unequivocally proclaim that the City Market is better than the Strathcona Farmers' market in the short-lived warm months that people out here call summer. I have no clue why I haven't reviewed this market. The market runs on summer saturdays, in the open blue skies of YEG-summers (yegmers?). The fresh fruits and produce is of a much better quality and I often find very interesting, curious items here that leave an impression on me. They have some fine baked goods, excellent produce, jewelry, cutting boards, sweaters - you name it! I particularly like this one group of farmers that were (at least last year) selling their "Prairie recipe book" along with fresh arugula and what not. As far as location - can it be better? Right on the LRT and close to all other things in downtown. The best way to experience a Saturday morning is to shop at the Strathcona market, take the (rather expensive) streetcar over the high level bridge and get off at the last stop and walk to the City Market. Although I thoroughly adore this market, I feel like I have to confess that I prefer the Strath. market's kettle corn. Ouch! read more

Edmonton's longest running and oldest farmers market is a true gem! Sure, it has moved a few times over the years to different parts of Edmonton's urban core, but now it is firmly in place along the 104th Street block and it rocks! From vegetables and fruit, sweet treats, flowers, crafts, cheeses, meats and pretty much anything else you can think of, yup, it's all here! But make sure to get here early, the really good stuff sells out fast! And please, remember to bring your Yelp Tote or any other re-usable bag you know you have! read more

Lots of great vendors, love sitting at the tables on the north end listening to the buskers, and having brunch on a patio at a 104 Street restaurant while watching all the market foot traffic is so fun. read more

Of all my adventures during summer 2013 this has to be one of my favorites. It's got a great location downtown conveniently located by a few of the LRT stations but I could see it being a bit of a headache for drivers as it closes down a few major streets. There is a ton of unique vendors to check out with interesting offerings like fruits,veggies,jewellery,soaps,candy,baked goods and so much more! If your hungry they also have places to stop for hot dogs,hamburgers,kettle corn,cotton candy,etc. I was told they also have live musicians but it was raining lightly when I went and they might have gone indoors. I really liked the clean colorful tables they had set up over by the Bay where you can sit down and enjoy your treats. It really beats the few random filthy picnic tables you see set up at other farmer's markets. Who knows how many warm days we have left but I highly recommend checking it out before we say goodbye to summer 2013. read more

It didnt feel like a chore. The place is well organized, clean, and has a wide selection of whatever it is you need! It's pricey compared to other places though. It's a tradeoff i guess. read more

The Downtown farmers market is the best way to spend part of your day... in the summer at least in Edmonton. The winter is not as big of a draw. I'm still giving it five stars because what started small has only grown, and I expect it to keep going to get better and better in the winter. Great vendors ranging from arts to jewelry to fresh meat to baked goods to of course fruits and veggies, and even cat furniture. And really, even if you don't need anything, it's usually just a great place to peruse, enjoy a sunny afternoon, some music, and a vibrant downtown community. We just moved closer to this market and I cannot wait for this summer as a result. read more

I know nothing can compare to the summer farmers markets that we have here in this great city, but the Downtown farmers market that runs in City Hall during the summer months is truly great and offers the wonderful opportunity to support local famers and businesses. From veggies (not too many fruits available this time of year) to ethnic foods, bakers, butchers, clothing and desserts there is plenty to choose from and none of it disappoints. Get there early to snag a nearby parking spot on the street and to beat the crowd. The only thing that could make things better was a hot/prepared foods section so you could snack while shopping. I'm always happy to support local and will take any chance I can get to leave the grocery store behind. Not too long before summer arrives and I don't have to set foot inside one at all! read more

It is unfortunate that Edmonton's climate does not allow this outdoor farmer's market to be open year-round. From fresh fruits and veggies to locally made jewelery and toys, the City Market has everything from the practical to the frivolous. I like to grab a hot dog and stroll about, looking at the beautiful produce and checking out the other goods. Don't come expecting a bargain, as organic produce and handmade items usually come with a higher price tag, but if you are someone who likes to shop locally, then this is the place for you. read more

The city market downtown is an example of what we need more of in Edmonton: a gathering of people mingling and chatting, a sensory delight with the smell of a variety of food trucks, the sounds of buskers (including a Canadian idol finalist) and a colourful array of vendors, produce and food, alongside a parade of super cute dogs. In short: a true feeling of community, all set in an urban backdrop that boasts a mix of old brick structures with towering high rises. Honestly feels energizing to walk through. I want more, more more! It's always a good time here. My fave vendors include: Irvings Farms (great sausages), Smokey Valley Goat Cheese (really great goat cheese varieties), and Green Eggs and Ham (duck eggs, various greens). Also, I can't talk about the market without mentioning the fresh Original Kettle Corn. It's a must-have when strolling down the market street. read more

Love the City Market! This is a staple for Saturday mornings and it keeps getting better and better. Not only is there a major variety of produce vendors, food trucks and artisans, but there is also a great variety of craft beer, wine and mead vendors! Why not start off the weekend with some sampling? The market seems to get bigger every year, so it can take some time wandering around the market on your first visit of the season. After a few times, you end up going to your favourite vendors in your own route. In the Winter, the market moves indoors to City Hall. I love the Emdonton City Market, especially in the summer because it' on 104th street which is my favorite street in all of Edmonton. This market goes inside for the winter which is okay, but there is less to chose from. I love the push in Edmonton to eat and buy more things locally, this market is packed! I try to buy as many of my groceries as I can from the markets around Edmonton and the downtown market has so many fantastic vendors! I would argue that the prices are comparable with the grocery stores for most things and you're supposrting local vendors and buy organic items that are better for you body. It's really a win-win. Even if you don't plan on buying anything, the City Market is a really neat place to wander around on a Saturday. I highly recommend you check it out! I would just recommend taking the LRT or walking to this market, because parking can be tricky! read more

5 stars all the way for this Market! By far my favourite market in Edmonton. I just wish I was home on the weekends in the summer so I could enjoy it more! This market is such a perfect size. It's about two city blocks now, as it veers off down 102 ave down. Plenty of vendors... the basics from veggies, fruit, meat, breads, and plenty of unique vendors (flowers, wood work, jewelry, baked goods, sauces...). What I love most is the location. I can stop in Credo and grab a coffee, or go to one of the many 104 street restaurants for a breakfast or lunch. This really is a great place to spend your Saturday morning! read more

I put off going to this market for years... it's busy downtown, expensive parking... this summer, I decided that this had to change and hauled my butt to the City Market on 104 st - and now it's quickly become my favourite market in the city! First off, the market is open 9-3 on Saturdays through the year (it moves indoors to City Hall in the winter). You can find parking for $3 all day (9-5) a few blocks away at the Edmonton City Centre East parkade. Parking at various surrounding lots are around $3 for 2 hours (which is a decent amount of time to spend there), so it is actually cheaper to get there than I thought. LRT stops right at Bay/Enterprise square station too. I love how it's more spread out than at the Old Strathcona Farmer's Market - there's room to stretch, it's not stop and go traffic everywhere! In the centre (104 st/102 ave) there is an area with little tables and chairs, and often a performer playing live music. As for the offerings, there are tons of things you'd expect at a Farmer's market in terms of produce, meats, clothing/jewelry... but where I think this market truly shines is its sweets! There are such inventive flavours of yummy products being offered here. My favourites are: * Watermelon Mint Lemonade - Dauphine Bakery (THE drink of the market, so refreshing and every 3rd person seems to be walking around with a rose coloured drink) * Avocado Lime Coconut popsicles - (not sure what the vendor's name is, but a lovely guy with 8 or so unique popsicle flavours) * Lychee Cherry ice cream (with actual cherry chunks) - Frosty Fox Ice Cream Co * Maple Pork Belly dumplings - Honest Dumplings (ok, not dessert, but pork belly might as well be ;) * Moonshine Doughnuts (I'm not a donut person, but my friends assure me they're fantastic) ... and SO many more! If I had to list any criticisms, I wish there were more ready-to-eat foods here so I could stop by for lunch. There are a few food trucks (most are more dessert based), but besides that, most stalls just sell food that you have to go home and cook - I want some more instant gratification! There ARE many cafes and restaurants nearby that you can eat in, though. As well, the abundance of samples (compared to Old Strathcona Farmer's Market) is lacking. But I do prefer the uniqueness and quality of products here over Old Strathcona. read more

Currently eating raw, unpasteurized dandelion honey with a spoon from Beanstalk's booth at the 104th street market. Talk about a treat of a street on a Saturday morning. Get your coffee, get your duck eggs, get your raw honey folks. This place is full of hipsters and dads and soft women behind booths specializing in jewellery, cupcakes and animals that are crocheted into human-like dolls. They look like they might be able to compliment you on your market ensemble of rolled up slacks, loafers and Ferris sunglasses. It's also worth noting that there are a lot of SUV strollers and parents wearing their babies in some form. You will get jealous when you see the patrons on Kelly's patio drinking cold beer at around noon or even earlier. Live music, hairy, bearded vendors, waffles and the famed kettle corn. If you eat that junk. If you don't, you're like me and you just get your coffee and honey and find somewhere to sit and watch people from behind your actual, real newspaper. I used to live in Toronto where everyone was equal parts bum and chic. I hate Toronto but the market is a great example of the faux style that people pick out of magazines and sometimes when I'm in the market crowd I can't help but feel like it's a scene in the Truman Show and someone is going to call 'WARDROBE' or 'HAIR AND MAKEUP,' loyal lackeys will rush around with make up brushes and coat hangars. It pisses me off that everyone looks the same and hopefully when you are eating your kettle corn by the fistful you will look around and decide never to wear a brimmed hat with a greasy moustache again. Or worse, an A-line skirt that doesn't fit your body type. Or worser: a jean tuxedo. Honey, really good. read more

I went to this farmers market recently for the first time. Although I still love the Old Strathcona Farmers Market I have to say the downtown one is a breath of fresh air (literally and figuratively). It was so nice to walk outside in the sunshine looking at the large variety of items being sold. The market is set up nicely with lots space to walk and there is a very friendly vibe there I found with all the vendors saying hello and offering food samples. I will for sure be returning to this market a few times this summer. read more
