My wife and I had a great experience. Wine selection was vast, as well as the beer selection. Waiter knew the menu as well as the drink selections very well. Crab cakes were appetizer, with spinach salad. Both were very good. Wife had Bleu cheese stuffed fillet and I had the dry aged ribeye. Ribeye was wonderful. Fillet was impeccable. Dessert was Nutella pie which I did not find remarkable but it was after a steak that left me speechless. I would likely opt for Krispy Kreme bread pudding or the cheesecake next time. Setting was very nice. Quiet dinner evening was well needed and valet parking was a nice bonus. Excellent meal and we will definitely visit in the next few weeks. read more

We just had an amazing dinner at Downtown Grill! The entire experience was perfect for celebrating our 35th wedding anniversary. Our waitress Sarah was so informative and fun and the food was delicious. We had the tuna appetizer and the duck entree. Where better to go to dinner than the location where Cher got engaged to Gregg Allman?! Despite being perpetually awesome for that, the food is also great! I've never had a bad meal here. The crab cakes and grit fritters are my favorite appetizers and I always get a steak for my entree. The Burt Reynolds cocktail is reallllllly good as are their Moscow mules. My wife and I came here for our 15th wedding anniversary. Between our three boys, COVID, home schooling, and 10 hour pulse work days this was a much needed date. Upon entering the restaurant you are struck by the old town feel which transports you back in time. The food options are well suited and grilled to perfection. The servers are well educated in drink options and pairing for both food and drink. Finally, the ambience conveys a romantic atmosphere which was a perfect fit for our evening. Classy joint in an alley in downtown Macon! The atmosphere is upscale and almost made me think I time traveled to a speakeasy in the 1920s. I ordered a strip steak with spinach and a baked potato. Maybe it was the booze but I genuinely think the steak was cooked better than I've had at supposed "top-notch" steak houses like Ruth Chris's and Capital Grill. The chef cooked it perfectly to the medium temperature as I asked. Not only was the food great but the bartender was great as well! The man knew his drinks and he engaged his clients with friendly conversation throughout the night but was not overly conversational. One of the other things I'll point out as a positive is that while they allow smoking (at the bar) they have a great ventilation system. There were at least two people smoking no more than 3 stools away and I wouldn't have even noticed had I not walked by to use the restroom and seen cigarettes in their hands. I was recently staying in town while doing business at Warner Robins. When traveling I like to use Yelp to find local restaurants. I found this hidden gem and gave it a try. I was definitely not disappointed. A somewhat limited menu with daily specials, but everything is hand made with love. French Onion soup was the best I ever had. Veal Parmesan was excellent as were the sides. Especially loved the cheese grits. I went there twice out of my 3 nights in Macon. Service is professional, friendly and very attentive. The atmosphere was warm and intimate. If you're looking for great food made with love I highly recommend the Downtown Grill. read more

My boyfriend & I came here for our two year anniversary and it was wonderful! We started off with the fried artichokes which were AMAZING, we did not expect them to be that good. Wonderfully crisp and buttery lemon flavor to them. For our main courses we splurged, he ordered the 21 day aged ribeye and I ordered the cowboy cut ribeye special. Both very different tastes but both delicious. He ordered his steak medium and I ordered mine medium rare and it was. I ate the whole thing. For our sides I got mashed potatoes and a Cesar salad and he got the mashed potatoes and almond string beans which were also so good! The Cesar salad dressing when so tasty, the mashed potatoes were a little cold though I will say. All in all it really was a great meal and our waiter was also very good!! I believe his name was Blake! Knowledgeable and attentive. The non-smoking section is small so it is easy for your servers to be able to keep a close watch on you and if you need to get their attention. An excellent dinner at the bar, perfectly prepared. I had the "mixed grill" which includes a grilled filet, lamb chop and a quail...all were fantastic. Michael, the bartender, suggested an incredible glass of red and it was ridiculously perfect, a red Zin which was a surprise. Hold the salt! Five sides, including salad and appetizers were tried and all but the grilled broccoli were over salted. Even the delicious crusty warm bread was surprisingly served with salted butter. The flavor was there but overcome by the saltiness; too pricey to be unable to finish due to sloppy seasoning. On Saturday night we went downtown to check out a new pizza place that had opened up. Much to our surprise, we found a sign on the door that read, "CLOSED GONE TO THE FAIR." My first thought was you have to be kidding me, but right next door was a place call Downtown Grill. I had heard the name, but did not know much about it. We decided to give it a try and so should you! First let me say that it is definitely more expensive than a pizza joint, but worth every penny. Our dinner for two was about $90.00 and that included an appetizer, two entrees and a couple of drinks. The menu is more spoken than written, but we found that wonderful. Our server, Mike, was extremely knowledgeable and easy going. I am one who thinks the restaurant experience is 50% Food, 35% Staff, and 15% Atmosphere. As far as the Staff goes, Downtown Grill hit it out of the park. Thanks, Mike! The food: well, it was amazing! For the appetizer we had oysters topped with bacon, cheese and spinach and I honestly would have prefered the more sophisticated flavor of prosciutto rather than the crunchy bacon. Both our entrees were out of this world. My entree was the creamy tomato pasta, with blackened shrimp and scallops. The scallops were almost better than the shrimp, and that says a lot for me. Also on my pasta was a type of goat cheese that was so creamy it was to die for. My girlfriend had the fillet mignon with grilled asparagus and pesto mashed potatoes, and she loved every bit of it. So much so that her plate was clean. The food came out at perfect intervals and I ended up taking a little more than half of mine home because there was just so much there. We did try a couple of specialties from the drink menu. The first was a sugary ginger cocktail, the name of which we cannot recall, but which was a fine mix of alcohol and artistry. Our second sample of the drink menu was call "The Betty." This is like your best-ever orange lollipop, liquified and with a kick. We Love The Betty. Ordering The Betty, and putting it on repeat is our recommendation. The decorum of Downtown Grill gives the feel of a Scottish home where William Wallace would be a regular. I have to say it was the perfect mixture of intimate, but open dinning. I recommend Downtown Grill to anyone who is up for intimate dining and excellent cuisine. I always get the scallops and they are large and perfectly seared every time; Gordon Ramsey would be proud. It comes with two sides and I always get the green beans and mashed potatoes which are delicious. The ambience is nice, its on the darker side inside but not too dark. Every time we have dined here we have had a great experience; knowledgeable waitstaff, high quality food at reasonable prices and wonderful cocktails made by friendly bartenders. Highly recommend for birthdays, anniversaries, graduations or anytime you want a wonderful meal and an excuse to get a little dressed up or not. read more

Ate here tonight for our anniversary. It was all excellent, from the waiter, Mark, all the way to the desserts. We started with a cheese tray, which came with five different types of cheese and bread. We were then served a loaf of fresh baked bread, which was outstanding. My entree was a rib eye steak, with baked potato and mushrooms. My wife got the rack of lamb, with cheese grits and grilled broccoli. For dessert we got the Creme brûlée, and a delicious ice cream with graham cracker crust, vanilla ice cream and cinnamon ice cream, topped with almonds! I was home one evening when I heard voices in the drive. Familiar voices, familiar as in family. Specifically my in-laws. FML suddenly came to my mind. I new we would have to get some dinner and I was not about to cook .The Downtown Grill came to mind as the perfect place.Tucked away in Mulberry Street Lane in the heart of downtown Macon, the Downtown Grill has been a fixture in the culinary scene since 1997. Billed as an English Steakhouse, they are far more than that, serving pastas and a very nice selection of fish. They also have a comfortable lounge cigar bar. My boy grabbed a couple of Cohibas and we were off. Upon entering I was reminded why I like this place so much. The faint smell of a cigar, the easy strains of jazz playing and the familiar sound of a martini being shaken. I felt like I was in my living room. We were quickly seated and our waitress Kathleen read off the specials. Shrimp and Grits, Beef Medallions stuffed with Roquefort, and a Sesame Crusted Tuna with a sweet wasabi sauce. We started with a couple of appetizers the Lump Crab Cakes and Sesame Tuna. The crab cakes were nice in size, loaded with jumbo-lump blue crab meat and a palette of spices bringing forth the subtle flavors of the sweet meat. The tuna was nicely seared, a shock of ruby flesh peeking out from the center of each piece. It melted in your mouth with each bite, the sweet wasabi sauce added a bit of heat without being overwhelming. Deciding on our entrees was no easy task. The menu options range from Bouillabaisse to duck breast. We ordered the Grilled Sea Scallops, Blackened Trout, Mussels in Wine, and despite being a sucker for duck, I opted for the Grilled Lamb. The food was brought out in a timely manner. Not fast, but given the atmosphere of the restaurant one doesn't expect to rush through a meal. There were eight large sea scallops that were paired with a garlic mashed potato and button mushrooms. The scallops sweet and seasoned well, potatoes were just that, and there must have been a pepper mishap in the kitchen concerning the mushrooms.They were completely overpowered by black pepper and inedible. How they were served was beyond our comprehension. Kathleen did offer to bring out another serving of mushrooms but we passed. The mussels were swimming a sauce richly flavored with wine, garlic and fresh thyme. Generally served as an appetizer, it made a nice meal paired with a salad of mixed greens and a crusty boule. The blackened trout was well prepared and not overly spiced served with grilled asparagus and a baked potato. And then came my lamb. For me, lamb is an event, and I'd rather eat anything else than poor lamb. I save my lamb eating for when I want to lighten my mood, and I expect something stellar as a result. The portion of my dish at first glance seemed large, which made me happy. Three four ounce chops arranged nicely on my plate with an accompaniment of sauteed spinach and grilled asparagus. I have learned in most restaurants when ordering Medium Rare one gets Medium Well, therefore I order my meat rare. My lamb came out Medium Rare (as I like it). What was not mentioned on the menu or by our server is that these are bone in chops. So what appears at first glance to be a sizable portion is in fact not. I was disappointed to discover this upon trying to cut my first piece and my knife hitting bone. Aside from that the lamb was flavorful on it's own. A nice Bearnaise or Port Wine Sauce was needed and would have made the dish far better. The spinach was perfectly sauteed. I like this preparation for it's simplicity, with only garlic and onion enhancing the delicate flavors of the greens. The grilled asparagus had a faint hint of lemon with no woody stems to be found. Over all, everything was well executed save for the disastrous mushrooms. We finished our meal and opted to have dessert and an after dinner smoke in the lounge. The dessert menu was broad in it's range. The traditional Pecan Pie and Crème Brûlée were in the fine company of Chocolate Chip Bread Pudding, Amaretto Ice Cream Pie, Three Mousse Cake, and a Turtle Cheese Cake. In the end, I decided to pass on dessert but old habits die hard. Crème Brûlée was ordered for the others to share. As the men puffed on their cigars, I watched a smoke ring slowly dissipate, I gave myself points for the evening going well. Good food seems to do the trick every time. read more

DON'T BOTHER! Can't begin to describe what a nightmare Downtown Grill was. Invited friends we have not seen in 30 yrs to meet there. Grill had no record of reservations made a week before. Seated by backdoor/ stairwell where servers were in and out constantly emptying trash in alley. They were also moving chairs stored behind our booth most of the time! Our server tried rushing us throughout our meal. Mediocre , bland , over priced food: $18.99 for tomato creme pasta w/ invisible crab. Wanna try this place? A recessed gem in the heart of Macon that captured my attention. i had had dinners in other restaurants primarily off of the main strips in this quaint town but on my last trip I was fortunate enough to experience Downtown Grill. It's not the easiest to find as the entry way is best described as an alley but you'll be glad you made the effort to locate it. Service is very attentive and the dinner setting is good for a business dinner as much as a romantic date. An extensive menu with various land and sea offerings, comprehensive wine menu and multiple liquor selections. Our group all ordered steak and every single on was cooked perfectly as ordered. I have been to this restaurant numerous times and the food is always great. My fiancé was visiting from another state and we were celebrating something special. Therefore, I decided to use some Restaurant.com coupons I had for them. Granted, I purchased the coupons in 2014 and didn't try to redeem them until 2016. However, the contractual agreement between the restaurant and Restaurant.com indicate the coupons never expire. To my dismay, when I tried to pay with the coupons, the waitress said they no longer take those. After explaining the coupons were intended to never expire, the waitress told me I could only use the $25.00 coupon toward the gratuity. Again I explained to her that was not the agreement of the coupon's usage. Finally they agreed to accept them according to the original agreement. However, I am writing this review because they were EXTREMELY rude to us since we held them to the coupon agreement. Their entire attitudes changed when we used the coupons. We couldn't even get a glass of water, and our original waitress NEVER came back. We felt like 2nd class citizens. Now mind you, the food is delicious. However, the coupon was only for $25. After that our bill was still well over $200. So to be treated so poorly after paying that much for dinner was unreal. I have two more $25 coupons; but, thankfully I was able to change them after reporting this incident to Restaurant.com. I deserve to be treated with respect no matter what and I have never been more humiliated at dinner than I was there. I will never go back! read more

I will say I was incredibly disappointed with the backlash I received on returning a drink - I ordered one of the *gin* cocktails and it arrived with peach vodka in it instead of a peach puree, it was not what I was expecting and I did not enjoy the flavor of the drink whatsoever, I asked politely to send it back and before I could even ask for a glass of wine instead another waiter popped her head in and told me that "alcohol sales are nonrefundable, let me try and tone this down for you", took it to the back and brought it back to my table in a tall glass filled with pineapple juice - I'm a type 1 diabetic, something sweeter is not what I wanted. My partner and I asked about my glass of wine 3 times before it finally arrived. Everyone at my table was done with their first round of drinks by the time I received my first glass. I have worked in the service industry for years and I was shocked to be treated this way - the patronizing attitude from this server created an atmosphere that I did not appreciate and will not be returning here in the future because of. Dinner here was a-mazing! I had the lamb and my boyfriend had the duck - we were both thoroughly impressed. Waiter was extremely attentive. Cocktails were delicious. Bread was hot and yummy. And the dessert (a chocolate cake) was so so yummy. Loved it, and I hope to go back. Decor is a bit stuffy (think paintings of horses and racing dogs) but cozy. They weren't playing any music, which felt a bit odd because it kinda made me nervous to talk because other people could hear your conversations. I really did not want to give a 1-star rating. The first couple of visits were great amazing steaks, service and atmosphere. However the last two visits have not been so great. I like to order the dry aged ribeye steak and it has been burnt crisp for the last two visits. The sad thing is that I even made the server aware of this when I ordered on New Year's Eve and I when the three steaks dinners were brought to our table all were three were burnt. When your paying over $50 a steak dinner you don't want it to taste like charcoal... I will not be back to this restaurant and it's sad because the food was amazing at one time, but it's not that great now.
