First of all, I made the mistake of ordering here since I normally order from On Dong for my jjajamyeon and sweet and spicy pork. So, yes, I did have a difficult time finding it because I found out it was in back of another restaurant on Piikoi. When I finally found it, I moved my car to the back parking lot. I was surprised it was much smaller than anticipated and I really wasn't greeted at all. In addition they didn't even make my order yet and I was truly disappointed since I had to wait and I was already in a rush- no apologies, nothing. The ambiance is really a small hole in the wall and pretty intimate as I heard many Korean conversations. I guess price point wasn't that bad but not as generous as my favorite place. Their black bean sauce was a bit flavorful but lacking something. The noodle portions were decreased 25% of our usual order so would I come back... maybe if someone else was treating and maybe one of friends who speaks fluently. Well this place sure was hard to find, but well worth it. Based on the address and Google Maps, you would think it was right where the marker is, but it is actually located in the back of the building and by the way the building is designed, you would never know it. That being said, go to the address and then pop behind the building to find the front door in the parking lot. Due to the location, I recommend parking at the mall and walking over. It is much easier that way. There is parking, but it is awkward, limited and a small charge to pay. So this place is place is Chinese/Korean. There are both ethnic dishes available. The place is decorated in Chinese fare, but the staff are all speaking Korean. The ladies working are all very nice and attentive. Friendly and welcoming from the start. I also found this place to be very clean and well lighted with comfortable seating despite their small size. This visit, I got the #6 which is a spicy seafood noodle soup called Jjamppong in Korean. It was loaded with lots of veggies and seafood in a spicy broth. My order also came with banchan (Korean side dishes) of kimchi, daikon, and onions with black bean sauce to dip in. The soup was amazing and warms you up with the heat and spicy. I was also impressed with their kimchi. The best place I've found so far to satisfy a jajangmyeon craving! Unlike other places, Dowon has a stir-fry jajangmyeon which I've come to love a bit more than the traditional dish. We placed a phone order for the spicy seafood stir-fried jajangmyeon and a Gan Poong chicken for dinner recently. The jajangmyeon was quite a full serving (could have fed 2 people in my opinion) with lots of sauce mixed in! We decided to get medium spice level but might opt for full spice next time. It was our first time trying the Gan Poong chicken and we weren't disappointed. After a short car ride, the chicken wasn't as crispy as it could have been but the flavor was still there. I also really loved the fact that our order came with a few extras including pickled radish, onion + black bean paste and kimchi! Overall the takeout process is very straightforward. We just called to place the order and walked in to pick it up and pay. Our order took about 25 minutes, so call your orders in ahead of time if you're hungry. read more

Best jjajangmyeon on the island. Hands-down! I've eaten at Dowon several times and the Jjajangmyeon never fails to be delicious, flavorful, and plentiful. My favorite dish is the spicy stir-fried jjajangmyeon with seafood. To be honest, I don't remember getting regular JJM so I'm not sure what the different is considering JJM is always stir-fried black bean sauce! The spicy, seafood stir fried JJM comes in a huge portion that easily fills up two people. My only complaint is the "seafood" was lacking since I only tasted small shrimps and not much else in the way of seafood. We also tried Gan Poong Chicken which was super delicious and more savory than the tradition tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork). The chicken had strong flavors of shoyu, mirin, ginger, and lots of garlic. Next time you've got a hankering for JJM, look no further. Jjajangmyun is one of my favorite Chinese-Korean dishes. It's the first dish I must have after landing in Korea. I asked some of my Korean friends where I could find this noodle dish here on Oahu and 2 different friends recommended this place. I have had this place bookmarked for awhile but today, I finally got to check this out with my kids. We were headed into town to visit a friend and after the visit, it was right around lunch time and I was excited to find out, it wasn't very far from her place. Parking: The parking is in the back of the restaurant. The lot is shared with the other establishments. The sign for "Please Pay $1 for Parking in the Parking Box" only applies after 6pm. What we ate: We had the regular Jjajangmyun which is pork. It comes with 3 side dishes: pickled daikon (yellow) seemed to be homemade (this is an absolute must and tastes amazing with the noodles; kimchi (made with regular green cabbage, but the kimchi marinade was on point); onion slices with black bean paste. The noodles were spectacular and brought me back to Korea. I shared a regular size with my kids but I should have probably just gotten the larger size ($3 extra), but I was afraid they wouldn't finish it. The noodles used in this dish is thick and very filling, but of course, when I think they won't finish it, they do....kids! I probably could have had another bowl to myself! Ambiance: The restaurant is small and cozy. They have one private room and probably less than 10 tables in the main area. It was super clean and the classic asian decor. It almost looks like the restaurant just opened. The decor is a stark contrast from what I am used to seeing in Korea, where the establishments that Chinese food is found in Korea are more of the hole-in-the-wall feel. When we walked in, I was so glad to see elderly Koreans dining here...you know this means the place is legit! Service: The service was great. The ajjumma (older lady in Korean) served us Jasmine tea for me and water for my kids upon arrival and was attentive. The food came out pretty quick and good thing, because the 3 of us were pretty hangry at this point. Kid Friendly? - They don't have a specific menu for kids but our dish was definitely shareable. Chinese food, Korean style... yummmm. LOCATION/PARKING: Located near Ichiriki on Piikoi. The parking lot is super easy to miss; as you drive down Hopaka you make a right before the sign for golftec. Free parking for diners until 6PM. FOOD: As with other Korean restaurants, the meal was preceded by banchan-- kimchee (real good kimchee), takuwan, and onions with a black bean (?) sauce. Ordered the jjajangmyun, sweet and sour pork, and boiled dumplings. I'm not a reliable critic of jjajangmyun as this was only my second time trying it, but I thought it was quite tasty. The sauce didn't have an overpowering black bean flavor and contained a reasonable amount of seafood. However, the consistency was slightly thin. The sweet and sour pork wasn't bad.. the pork was crunchy and tender, and the sweet and sour sauce was decent albeit slightly liquidy. The boiled dumplings (10) were also good, but could've used a little more filling. SERVICE: We missed the lunch rush so service was quick; we were immediately served tea (had to ask for water) and had our order taken soon after. The food arrived timely and although no one really came to check on us while we were eating, we were able to flag them down easily. OVERALL: Will come again if in the mood for jjajangmyun. We've been frequenting this restaurant ever since we moved into the Ala Moana neighborhood. Although they're within walking distance to our home and we're regulars, they've not completely won over our hearts, er, stomachs like our other favorite Korean Chinese restaurant (shh, Eastern Paradise) on King Street. Dowon Chinese restaurant occupies a space behind Teapresso and Ichiriki on Pi'ikoi Street in between Hopaka and Kona Streets. It has a shared parking lot with the other businesses in this strip mall. The lot has quite a number of wide spaces but you must remember which stall you park in and pay your dollar into the pigeon hole collection box otherwise, you risk being towed. There are metered street parking stalls along Pi'ikoi Street, too. The restaurant is clean, spacious and well-maintained. They even have a couple of private dining rooms to reserve for larger groups. Its staff are friendly, helpful and speak English so if you have questions about a dish, they can respond well to you. Service is good and quite attentive as our server has often offered to refill our banchan, water glasses and teapot. We've been to Dowon to dine at a number of times within the past months and have tried several dishes. We like that they offer 3 banchan (refillable, too) that consist of house made kimchee, diced raw onions with chunjang and danmuji (yellow pickled radish aka takuwan). But, for comparison sake, our usual order focuses on 3 dishes: - Garlic Chicken with mushrooms and bamboo shoots - good flavor and the sautéed tender chicken is cut into generous sized chunks. The crunch of the bamboo shoots and soft yet meaty mushrooms make for a good balance of textures. I sort of wanted a bit more garlic in the sauce but we are okay with Dowon's version. - Noodles with Seafood and Bean Sauce (Jajangmyeon) - also has a good flavor and balance of salty and sweet. The thick, square cross section shaped noodles resemble spaghetti alla chitarra only that the Korean noodles are not egg pasta. The bean sauce is not as thick as at Eastern Paradise so expect a bit of soupy gravy. - Potstickers or sometimes boiled dumplings - the wrappers of these potstickers were delicate yet firm enough to hold the filling without falling apart at first bite. Its pork filling was flavorful but I thought a bit skimpy or maybe there was shrinkage during cooking. - Gan Poong Gi (Chicken) - ordered during another dine, was good, too. It's basically a Koreanized Chinese dish of sweet and sour chicken. The chicken pieces were battered and deep-fried and served with a spicy, tangy sauce. The chicken pieces are tender with a nice crunch from its deep fried crust. IMHO, this is one of those dishes that you need to eat quickly elsewise the sauce will make the fried crust a bit soggy. Hm, maybe that might be the point of this dish. We consider this a good and tasty neighborhood restaurant that we enjoy and frequent for either lunch or dinner. read more

I saw Dowon featured on Yelp Hawaii Instagram and I knew I had to try it because I love zha jiang mian. I decided to pick up some food and take it home. I'd recommend trying to find street parking, or if you're feeling risky, you could park at Ala Moana and walk over. Otherwise, there is a pay lot. The waitress took my order and was about to offer us some water and a seat, but I wanted to get Ko Kane.... she was so nice though! So uncharacteristic of most Chinese/Korean places I've been to. I'm always down to eat zha Jiang mian, and I've had some just ok noodles, but the zha jiang mian from Dowon might be my favorite. The noodles are perfectly chewy and the sauce is so delicious. I also got an order of sweet and sour pork. The pork was fried and crispy. I thought the sauce wasn't overly sweet, it's also not bright red like the kind at other Chinese restaurants. I liked the veggies in the sauce. The sweet and sour pork and zha jiang mian is such a perfect combination of dishes. The takuan is also soooooo good. I think I'd go back just for that. And the kimchee?? Omg. I usually don't even like kimchee all that much, but Dowon's is awesome! I can't believe I've never been here before!!! read more

Craving jajangmyeon prior to one of my rare night shifts, I placed an easy phone order for it. After all, I had this restaurant bookmarked for several months. The order was ready in no time, and also included side orders of picked radish and kimchi. It was packaged well and I couldn't wait to dig in. In between all the family gatherings my mom, grandmother and I found ourselves with nothing planned on Christmas night LOL so I recommended we check out something different. I'm trying to get my old school family to be more adventuresome. They were game as long as I'm driving;) The 3 Chinese ladies drove on the H1 eastbound, Kinau exit, right on Pensacola st and left on Kona street. The parking lot is on your left hand side. Shares a lot with air karaoke and behind Ichiriki. The entrance to the restaurant faces the parking lot, it's NOT facing piikoi. On Christmas night it was pretty crowded but we didn't wait and the 3 of us were seated immediately. The interior is clean and they have a small private room in the front and back of the restaurant with tables and booths in the middle. Black bean seafood Noodles (Jiajiamyun) is what I came for and I wasn't disappointed. The noodles were chewy and thick and they have a generous serving of sauce to pour over it. The few shrimps were not that large and there were a few pieces of squid and sea cucumber in it. I thought that it was worth it as this dish is only 8.95$ Sweet sour shrimp 17.95$ was a little pricey but it was flavorful and different from the shrimp canton type. The shrimp is fried and they have a slightly sweet sauce that's over it, we ate the whole plate, I'd order that again if I have people to share it with. Boiled dumplings 7.95$ for about 9 pieces the filling was beef and vegetable, they were pretty good but not outstanding. Noodles with seafood and vegetable soup 9.75$ was a generous bowl with shrimp, squid, cabbage, mushrooms and noodles. The noodles they use are the same type as their jiajiamyun. The soup was flavorful and tasty the consistency of it was similar to an egg drop soup. This is the perfect thing to eat on a chilly day and for those who prefer mild soups over the other spucy options here. We each sampled some but took the rest home. The food is actually 4.5 star rating but I couldn't round up on this one because of the service. Didn't offer us any water, forgot a dish and didnt make it till I reminded them of it so it came out significantly later, didn't come back to check on the table after bringing the food, went to refill the teapot and never brought it back, and no apology for forgetting a dish. Watching so many Korean Korean dramas makes me want to experience what mixing jajangmeyun is like LOL. This place is located behind teapresso bar and ichiriki. They have a decent sized parking that is shared with other shops nearby. Sometimes parking is hard to get but you can easily park at alas then walk over. It's $1 per hour and you pay in the pay box. This place is very Korean Chinese. The workers there can speak both Korean and Chinese and their menu is also written in both languages. There are also a lot of Chinese dishes on the menu. Jajangmeyun is originally a Chinese dish but the Korean people made their own version and both are really yummy. I love the sides that they give. Their kimchee is really good. It doesn't really have a strong pickled flavored compared to the rest. The jajangmeyun itself is always satisfying. Super yummy and their portions are decent. In the seafood version you get a few pieces of small shrimp and squid. The sweet and sour pork is my favorite. However I wish the sauce would be a little more flavorful. The black pepper beef was great. A lot of flavor, the meat was tender, and it came out piping hot. I burnt my tongue eating onion lol. IMO I think the prices are pretty decent, but maybe on the higher side. I would come back whenever I crave some jajangmeyun! read more

This is one of my go-to spots when I am craving authentic Korean Chinese food. I order the standard jajangmyeon and sweet & sour pork with rice with my boyfriend and we split it. We usually order a large bottle of Korean beer (Cass or Hite) or Heineken too. Portions are great for sharing. The noodles are chewy and the black bean sauce is on point. I love the sweet & sour pork and how it's not overly sweet or artificial tasting. The pork is still crunchy by the time it gets to you since the sauce doesn't have a chance to soak in yet. Service is great. They're quick, easy, and I appreciate their efficiency. The vibe is no-frills but clean and feels like a nice hole in the wall. Cash & credit is accepted. Parking is available but be sure to put $1 in the little metal cash box. The actual parking spots are a little tight/small so better if you have a smaller car. Just ate here last night to celebrate my brother-in-law's birthday. Original destination was Makino Chaya, which we've dined at several times before I suggested we come here instead. None of us have ever eaten at Dowon and we weren't keen on driving to Pearl City. Located in the same area as Ichiricki and Air Park Karaoke Lounge this restaurant is tucked in the Ewa/Mauka corner of the building. Dowon serves Mandarin Chinese food. All prepped with the Chinese decor and atmosphere. Initially saw some pictures posted on Yelp and the food seemed very promising. And Dowon sure delivered. The good thing in dining with family or fellow Yeeps you get to sample a large variety of food. My family browsed the menu and instead I glanced through the reviews and pics posted on Yelp. They gave me the responsibility of ordering and here's what was sampled: 1) Spicy Fried Chicken (5/5) If you've been to AKL (Ah Lang at Imperial Plaza) this chicken tasted just the same but boneless. Chicken was deep-fried until perfection and had the crispy texture despite being tossed in a sauce with sautéed onions, garlic, carrots and bell peppers. Hands down this this was our favorite dish. 2) Ja Jiang Noodles (4/5) Noodles were very tasty and I enjoyed the texture. Very generous with the vegetable meat sauce. We initially ordered one serving but the waitress recommended us to have a larger serving because there were 6 of us. Good call on her part. We finished it. Very solid dish. 3) Spicy Seafood Noodle Soup (4/5) Waitress also advised us for a larger serving. This dish came in a large bowl filled to the top. Very tasty and had a good spicy kick to it. Several family members pointed out the seafood barely to be found. Nonetheless we polished off the bowl. Another solid dish. 4) Boiled Dumplings (1/5) We originally ordered fried dumplings but they were sold out as of 530pm. Selling out so soon when dinner crowd hasn't started yet? I didn't understand this. Dumplings were bland. Tasted like water. No dipping sauce. If you like bland food this is for you. Not to our liking. 5) Sweet and Sour Pork (4/5) One fact our family all agreed: Dowon knows how to deep-fry food. The pork was deep-fried until golden brown. You could still experience that crunch despite swimming in a pool of non-red sweet and sour sauce. Onions, black fungus, carrots, green onions and Chinese cabbage accompanied with the sweeter than tangy sauce. Too sweet to our liking. 6) Kung Pao Shrimp (3/5) Your standard Kung Pao stir-fried celery, carrots, onions, bell peppers.....nothing special. Very standard. Shrimps were average size, sautéed with some dried red chillies. We didn't think the dish was spicy at all. Very mild. A trio of banchan came to the table, sliced takuan, homemade Kimchee and raw onions with a dark bean paste sauce. All of us just raved about their Kimchee which was generously refilled multiple times. So flavorful with a nice kick. Service was good and our waitress was very friendly. Our water and hot tea pot were refilled. We left very satisfied and looking forward to coming back again. NOTE: Shared parking with other businesses so somewhat challenging if you come during peak hours. Flat rate of $1 after 6pm. Some days is very good and satisfactory but other times it'll be so off! The noodles will be cooked way undone. It won't harmonize with the sauce because it is so thick and hard! The noodles need to be cooked way better every single time.. or else it's just so disappointing. Also, the jjangppong is very inconsistent too. Thank you to my yelp friends Helen & Charlene for writing a review and check-in. I was so thrilled when I heard about this jja Jang min (black noodle) place in town. This place is located behind Kung Fu Tea (now closed). Parking is available for $1 on weekends. You can enter parking lot through Kona street. Be careful it's one way in and out. The restaurant is small but cozy. They have about 4 booths and 3 small tables. They have 3 small private rooms too. I'm thinking this place used to be a karaoke place? Anyhow, it's a clean place. We ordered jja Jang min, spicy seafood noodles & sweet sour pork. You also get complimentary sides dishes Kim chee, raw onions, and da-kwan. Everything was delicious. This is as good as it gets in Hawaii unless you're in Korea or San Francisco. I also liked that they used all porcelain plates & bowls and not plastic. The service was excellent. The ladies were very polite and friendly. I will be back for more. I'm so happy. read more

Finally somewhere that has black bean noodles! After all these years of searching, I finally found a worthwhile place to get black bean noodles. I've been craving this for years! My coworkers and I wanted to try after seeing it on Yelp so we decided to do takeout. With a group of 4, we decided to order 2 black bean noodles and one jjpoong chicken. Each of the orders were quite large for our whole group. We even had left overs! The noodles were fresh and the sauce wasn't salty at all. The sauce has pieces of squid, onions, and pork. The order came with sides; kimchee, onions with hoisin sauce, and takuwan. The chicken was great as well. There's a bunch of flavor and I liked how it was boneless. Yum! From what my coworkers said, it's better than On Dong and it's much cheaper as well. Def will come back and take out again! Woohoo my cravings are fulfilled! read more

My go to black bean noodle place! Love their fried pork too. The dish I wouldn't recommend is their spicy fried shrimps. The batter was soggy rather than crunch (not sure if that was the intent). Maybe it'll be better if the sauce was on the side? Recommend ordering over the phone to avoid the wait time. They have a small parking lot in the back. read more

If you are looking for good ja-ja mein (noodles with black sauce) and ja bong (spicy seafood noodle), this place will give On-Dong a serious run for it's money. First of all, it's in the back of part of Piikoi, so it's hidden and somewhat hard to find. The service is quick and very friendly, they will quickly fill your tea and sides. By the way, your meal with come with kim chee, raw onions, and pickled daikon. The kim chee is excellent. We started off with the boiled dumplings and it was excellent. The wrapping was very smooth and silky, the filling had pork and veggies. Good flavoring with a hint of ginger. Good deal for $8. The ja ja mein is comparable to On-Dong, but it's a bit on the sweeter side and the sauce is not as thick and it's priced the same, a tad under $10. The ja bong ($9.50) was filled with generous portions of veggies and misc seafood. The soup was a symphony of seafood flavors. I usually go to On Dong for my craving of Korean Chinese noodles. However, I have found a better tasting Korean jajangmyun here in this off the beaten path restaurant below the Air Park karaoke place across the street from Ala Moana center. The sauce tasted fresher and full of wonderful flavor. Found out from the very friendly lady serving us that the chef used to work at On Dong for many years. However, I liked his version of jajangmyun here much better. The side dish of kimchee was also tastier. I shared the sweet tangy beef tempura(tangsuyok) with my bf and he just gobbled it up. It was simply addictive with perfect crispness. Yes, I will be back!!! read more
