The place was relatively small but very imaginative. It was themed in perfect character of the neighborhood (full of hookers, sex shops, and strip clubs, etc.) complete with a pole, for your friends that get a little lose after a few drinks and as many scarlet color accents to get you in a maudlin mood for the night. We stuck to beers as we really had no intention on stopping to drink at all but we wanted to rest our feet for a few moments and the happy hour sign pulled us in. I should have tried a few cocktails as the bartenders looked like seasoned veterans across the bar concocting drinks like mad scientist. They made many of the ingredients themselves and I just wish I could have tasted some of everything. Needless to say, I'll pop back into this place the next time I'm in the neighborhood, as I do rather enjoy the place.

Wow, this place is so weird. This place should be a restaurant (absolutely delicious fresh Italian…read morefood!!!) and just focus on that but they try (very badly!!!) to be a bar (terrible cocktails, loud music, etc.) and it all kind of just fails. Some points were AMAZING whereas others just ruined it. Where to start? It's dimly lit, big comfy chairs and couches, and you can make large group reservations (-that's what led us here). Happy hour is until 10, and you can grab a pint of Heineken for 4.50 (other beers are not on HH, 6.8 each for grim, Blanche, or picon), or cocktails for 5€. STAY AWAY FROM THE COCKTAILS AT ALL COSTS!!!! We ended up trying a gin fizz, margarita, and caipirinha and all were extremely extremely terrible, to the point that they were nearly undrinkable. (And I am by no means a cocktail snob! My standards are generally pretty low, but yikes!) The wines were also not so great, at least the ones my friends and I tested. Judging by the drinks, I wasn't really feeling this place for food but you know how it is - a girl's gotta eat! I looked around and was like whoa - this stuff looks legit!!! The pizzas and pastas and antipasti others ordered were making my mouth water! As per what I read on the menu, all ingredients are freshly stocked from Italy. The cooks are Italian as well. Man oh man. None of that was a lie - I would definitely come back here again for the food. The antipasti platter we split was super legit, and the bread to accompany it was freshly cooked in the oven. Speaking of the oven, at one point, smoke from the oven started wafting up from downstairs where the kitchen is and it got so bad that they had to open all the doors lol. But I'll let that slide. This place was so odd tho. Every 20 minutes or so, the already blaring music (I mean literally you had to shout to hear the person right next to you) would be turned up. Turned up super super loud, to nightclub volume. Yet it was like 9pm and this was not a club - just ppl having dinner and drinks. As soon as the music went up, you had like 10 ppl simultaneously trying to grab the servers' attention, like turn it down! Geez. I left with a headache and my headache is still there this morning. This is a review of Point Ephemere just as a bar/cafe…read more Point Ephemere is also an important rock club - a major player on the French music scene. Judging how good the bands are and how good this is as a place to listen to live music is a job for other reviewers and not me. Music clubs however don't make their money off of admission tickets to live shows. They make their money selling drinks and food. So the club stays open all day and the nights where no acts are scheduled to keep that all important drink money coming in. All signs are that from an economic standpoint, Point Ephemere is in good shape. The place is packed with young people and they are drinking up a storm. * * * Point Ephemere is located in the old Usine Ephemere. It is basically in an abandoned factory. Batman villains build headquarters in abandoned warehouses. Rock clubs locate in abandoned factories. It is on the Canal Saint Martin. The Canal Saint Martin used to be poor, industrial and down-at-heel. It is now yuppifying and cute with urban redevelopment occurring on all sides. Significantly, the canal attracts vast hordes of young people who hang out all day on the side of the canal, picnicking and having fun. The picnickers drop off somewhat by the time you get to Point Ephemere - But Point Ephemere caters to this college age clientele. The bar inside has lots of drinking space - some semi-outdoor facing the canal, and some just inside. It intentionally cultivates a look of Seattle style grunge. The rooms facing the canal have thick plastic sheets for windows and that is an intentional artistic choice. Bathrooms are ... well ... The drink menu runs towards college age rotgut. The main beer that everyone was having (including me) was Grolsch. Grolsch is get-you-drunk swill. Prices are DEFINITELY on the low side which is one of positives that pulls people through the door. * * * As a hangout and a drinking place, I was very much less than impressed. But you know .. All of that can become irrelevant if the band of your dreams is playing in the next room. In Austin, where I live, the Hotel Vegas is a dryrot infested slum. But they have enough room for four bands at a time. At least one of them is going to be really solid. So never judge a rock club by the quality of the real estate. Judging a drinking place by the quality of the real estate? Go for it.

It took us an additional 15 mins to walk to from where Yelp map pinned the location. But it was so worth it. You're RIGHT by the canal. Pretty much all locals. Young hip crowd, but not overly hip. Friendly waiters/waitresses who can speak English. Food was alright, huge portions, and the cheeseburger was pretty good. You're not really here for the food anyways, it's the whole laid-back atmosphere, the outdoor dining, the awesome location, the graffiti all around, and music drifting from a dancefloor DJed by a mustached hipster, that makes this place an unforgettable experience.
