Located in the Covent Garden neighborhood, my husband and I were in this the area after leaving the British Museum. Intrigued by the "live and eat pie" sign painted on the window, we decided to check it out. We were instantly greeted by the bartender who offered us a few tasters of various brews. I decided to go with a pint of the Coast to Coast ale, while my hubs went for one of the darker red ales, along with a classic beef and potato filled shepherds pie. Served with a side of mashed potatoes and gravy, it was delicious! My hubs and I actually ended up sitting at the bar chatting with the bartender as he was super welcoming! As the evening continued, it became quite the lively place and we ended up talking with a few others who stopped in for a drink. It's definitely a fun and chill pub to check out!

The rooms are well equipped, there is a lot of wood that has been used, which gives any room a warm and welcoming atmosphere. There is not a socket to any bed in the shared rooms, but there are a lot of multiple sockets lying around that you can tow to your bed. You get a towel and a key for a little locker... not enough space to place a handluggage bag / suitcase into it, but although I did not test it, a 15" laptop might fut in there. One thing really disturbed me though: the water was not flushing properly through the toilet. That means if someone left "a little more" in the toilet sometimes the water doesn't reach the middle of the toilet. That's why there was not a single toilet without "stains" in the bowl. That is a pity because the wood makes the toilets so nice and actually they are clean and nice to use. But Pack and Carriage why did you save on the actual toilet? Why? You could have gotten five stars from me for a hostel with otherwise such a good relation of what you offer and what the price is. The breakfast contains a buffet of cereals, Nescafé coffee, apple and orange juice and toast with a big variety of jam and marmalade. There is no cheese or ham bit hey - it costs 50 Pence, yes that's definitely true! And I've never had such a great breakfast for so few money. In the room price, bedsheets and a towel are included. The sheets only contain of a blanket and you put a sheet between you and the blanket. So people who are intestinal in sth more "hygienic" should consider to take a youth hostel blanket with them from home, as extra sheet between. Wireless lan is free and really quick in the lobby bit not so in the room. In the room you might not be able to watch YouTube videos, but it is enough to look up directions for the next day.

Pack & Carriage (formerly Elixir) has always been a bit of an enigma. It occupies that strange…read moreliminal space between Euston and the southern edge of Camden, where new bars and restaurants are beginning to cluster around Koko like drunken teenagers cluster around . . . well, also around Koko. P&C, even though it is relatively new, gives out the feel of a local that's been there a while, but is now attracting a younger, cooler clientele to mix with the savvy regulars (the Prince Arthur, just down the street, is the same way). I'm sure this is happening in Hackney and Dalston on a weekly basis, but you have to go beyond the Camden vortex to find it in NW1. This is especially the case since property developers bought up and destroyed the Crown & Goose, may they rot eternally. P&C sports an impressive range of beer handles, and some quite obscure ones (e.g. Tiny Rebel) to go along with good London brews like Brewdog, Camden Helles, etc. The cocktails are also strong, well-mixed, and very reasonably priced. I haven't had the burgers yet, but they are excellent by all reports, and I will update my review once I have given them a go. P&C also offers live music, ranging from open-mike wierdness (though amusing) to some fairly well-respected local bands. The jukebox is excellent, with a mix of soul, 80s classics, and more contemporary stuff depending on the day, time and crowd. There's nothing particularly impressive about the decor, but it is open, comfortable and welcoming. It is devoid of tourists, the Koko party-boppers, and the Euston "just three pints before my train to the soulless hell that is Bedford" crowd alike. All in all, Pack & Carriage is an excellent starting point for a Camden jaunt, a Kx booze-up, or a quick drink before your train norfwards.

I feel compelled to warn others about my experience at the Thursday night karaoke at the Coach &…read moreHorses near Oxford Circus. I attended with my fiancé and was looking forward to what should have been a fun evening. At the start of the night, the karaoke DJ accepted my song request and our duet requests without any issue. However, as the evening went on, I noticed that we were being treated differently from other customers. Despite having submitted our songs earlier, we were skipped twice in a row. Meanwhile, a white couple who had arrived more than an hour after us were repeatedly called up to sing ahead of us. The most upsetting moment came when the DJ announced that it was our turn. I went forward expecting to sing my solo song, only to be told that I could not. The DJ claimed that he thought my fiancé and I were supposed to be singing a different duet first. When my fiancé politely asked whether I could simply sing my song next, the DJ instead blamed him for supposedly numbering our song requests incorrectly. This was not true, but my fiancé apologised anyway in an attempt to keep things friendly and again asked whether I could go next. Even then, the DJ refused and said he would call another singer first, despite having already announced that it was our turn. At that point, we decided to leave. Before leaving, we raised our concerns with the pub manager because the entire experience had left us feeling degraded and unwelcome. As a black woman attending with my fiancé in a mixed-ethnicity relationship, I could not ignore the contrast between how we were treated and how white customers were treated that evening. Afterwards, my fiancé followed up with the manager, who said that he had spoken to the karaoke host but did not understand what the miscommunication had been. He also explained that the karaoke host was employed by a separate entertainment company rather than by the pub itself, and that there was nothing further he was able to do beyond passing on our concerns. I cannot know what was in the DJ's mind, but based on what happened, I was left with the strong impression that I was not being treated equally. I therefore feel it is important to share my experience so that others can make their own informed decision about whether to attend this karaoke night. While I appreciate that the manager did at least raise the matter with the karaoke host, I was disappointed that no explanation could be provided for why we were skipped repeatedly, why I was prevented from singing when it had been announced as our turn, or why other customers who had arrived much later appeared to be given preferential treatment. I sincerely hope these concerns are taken seriously in future and that all customers, regardless of ethnicity or background, are treated fairly and with respect.
