Seven years later, my son is thriving. Honor roll, lots of friends, zero behavior problems, makes…read moregreat decisions on his own. Just a kid becoming their own person. The key to that success was diligent unwinding of Jen McMains diagnoses and the after effects it had on my son. To be concise, he believed he was "less than" and not capable of success because of her influence not just on him but his mother. When we entered her care, we were seeking proactive palliative support. What we received were problems which took years to unwind. Recently, I spoke with his mother (we get along great BTW) and him, on separate occasions, about getting some sort of trauma therapy related to this care and his subsequent experience at his school (teachers treated him harshly because they thought he could not reason like a "normal child"). I was on the fence about it but wanted to begin a dialogue. His mother was apprehensive about finding a "good" therapist, and my son was adamantly against it - saying I could be his therapist. I told him we could do better than my homegrown CBT, but I respect his decision and understood his fear of therapists. This is actually the point: it's not simply that this practitioner was inartful and rebuked by subsequent second opinions but my son is now actively against engaging with the profession, in general. A bias that may ending up yielding more harm in the future because of his negative bias towards therapy that could help him but he avoids it because his first experience was soooooo negative and changed his life for the worse for a number of years, according to his own reckoning. McMains is long gone actively from our lives but I still have to contend with the lingering and growing resentment of my son (now a preteen) against his mother for the initiating of an arc of his despair which began with seeing this therapist. It's not fair to mom, but it is a reality. I told his mom this was happening a while ago and they talk, but he's not changing his opinion of her. He sounds like an adult talking about an ex when he talks about his mom - very pragmatic and "over it". There were no winners here. While I was "right", I wish I wasn't. I would trade a decade of my life to have never walked through her door. That's how many stars I give her.
