This is a great place to stop for breakfast or lunch on the way to Monterey area if you driving from up north in CA. Menlo Park is a well-heeled neighborhood so prices at Draeger's are reflective. That said, go to the little upstairs cafe and get wonderful service from there longtime ladies who are gracious and efficient. The menu items are very generous and easily split by 2 people (which we did) so that makes it a bargain. The bakery is a visual and taste treat; (mango mousse cake for a special birthday was great) not cheap but worth it. This is a gourmet grocery store and it's well worth wandering the aisles and purchasing yummies for your dream picnic basket later on. read more

Best market i've ever come across. I can't say enough great things about Draegers. They always have the highest quality products or that specialty item no one else has, certainly the premier grocer in the bay area. Additionally the prepared foods are delicious. I've never had a single prepared food item that wasn't one of the best i've ever had. The deli's turkey sandwiches, sesame noodles, chicken cordon bleu, and twice baked potatoes are all the highest quality and taste perfect. The bakery also has some of the best chocolate cakes i've ever had, perfect petit fours, and great cheese sourdough bread. Yea Draeger's is insanely expensive--but you will never find damaged or bruised fruits and vegetables, and you find the hardest to find ice creams. Although Three Twins Ice Cream from Petaluma sadly was taken down by the Covid-19 fallout, at least McConnell's from Santa Barbara is still running, and now I have found my next favorite: Smitten Ice Cream. Came across today the coolest flavor: Bee Sting with Honey and Chilies. I had my confirmation letter and ready to go went to deli to pick up but they said they never got the order and that it must have been a fault on my side. I did try to call A week before even left a message but no call back and no answer. I've always been happy with my purchases here, and since we moved to Palo Alto, I'm even more thrilled to have this place as my local grocery store. The unique finds here are what used to make shopping at places like Whole Foods a joy, so it's great to have a sizeable independent grocer that focuses on variety and quality, not just making a quick buck from moving lots of volume. They have my favorite orange juice here, for example: the calcium and vitamin D one that still has some pulp in it for extra healthy goodness. Nob Hill Foods used to have it but stopped carrying it. My only gripe: I can't find a good guacamole here. Maybe I'm just missing where it's stocked because of the store layout? If they made one I'm sure it would be amazing. I've been very happy with their other prepacked foods: the enchiladas and the taco salads especially stand out. read more

I have mixed feelings about Draeger's Market. It's expensive AF, but the quality really is excellent. The selection of European goods is fantastic. Same for the coffees and teas. The wine selection is always a winner. If you're looking to pull together, say, an olive and cheese platter, this is the place. However....the attitude isn't welcoming. Like others have written, the cashiers usually come across as frosty and resentful. And the clientele can be downright nasty -- some people come across as extremely entitled and "superior". Warm and fuzzy Draegers is not. The prepared foods area consistently has yummy (and yummy-looking) things. The baked goods are beautiful. There's a great greeting card selection upstairs, and a small cooking store, too. The products are very, very, very good. But, be prepared to pay a small fortune and get ready for frost. I have been known to go here, make a trek in fact, for their salad bar alone. It's a bountiful thing of beauty, with loads and loads of choices, not just with fruits and veggies, but also with protein choices, e.g. full boiled eggs, tofu, chicken, and one of my all time favorites--baby bay shrimp (cooked, of course). Their blue cheese crumbles makes an over the top luxury, and they have this bib Italian bean salad type situation that's absolutely to die for, not to be topped by their three bean salad, with green beans, garbanzos and red kidney beans. I love to base it with raw spinach more than the greens of lettuce. They have a separate olive bar which you can also go crazy in, and top off your salad with all sorts of green black, oil cured or kalamata olives. My only gripe are their dressings, which I'm telling you, if only they'd make those fresh t]rather than bottled, I'd happily pay extra for. The cost btw., for just a salad here is not cheap ... but is it worth it? Yes, there's just something about theirs and all the assorted offerings, which levels up more so than other salad bars at grocery stores I've been to. I'm more inclined to go to their San Mateo location because I live closer, but if we're passing by this city, I'll definitely make a pit stop. read more

This is a premuim grocery what puts whole foods to shame. They have their own parking lot which is sufficient nine times out of ten, and for that tenth time there is a another surface lot on the other side of evelyn. This is an outstanding premium (that is to say higher end) grocery store. There has been no expense spared in the store layout/service/quality of goods and of course the pricing. This place has a lot of items for the gourmand and in general stuff that's hard to find just about anywhere, such as a magnum of arrogant bastard ale, truffle oil, and a full service butcher. They have the largest cheese collection I've seen anywhere, and just wandering around the store is a feast of the senses. They have a sommelier on staff. They have a lot of innovative ways to help you buy-they do delivery, catering, and not only online ordering but the shopping carts have an interface that is integrated with their inventory via dedicated wireless connection. This means that you can use the cart to check what aisle the items you want are on, and their pricing. Whoa. All of this comes at a price of course. It is entirely possible to spend a thousand or more dollars on a handful of items (magnum of champagne, truffle oil, caviar) . So this may not be the budget friendly choice for a family of five's weekly grocery run. Having said all that, should you need to pick up some pic nic fixings (wine, cheeses, fruit) that can be done fairly reasonably. say 20 dollars or so. Definitely not a weekly grocery store to get what you need but I love indulging here. I come here for the nicer products. Like when I need more variety of cheeses or meats I come here. For normal items like paper towels, dried goods, vegetables, etc. I usually go somewhere else. Customer service is pretty good, which is helpful since they so much here. The meat department is especially great. They have more than is visible, so just ask for whatever you are looking for. Parking is pretty terrible... very busy on the weekends so beware. It is located down town so you can find parking elsewhere, it just might be a tad of a walk. read more

I have shopped at Draeger's twice a week for the past several years and everyone - cashiers, baggers, meat department, produce department, bakery, have always been courteous and friendly. HOWEVER, the deli staff has a whole different attitude regarding customer service. About 75% of the time I have to stop at the deli counter I have to wait for several minutes for someone to wait on me (no other customers in line) while the workers in back of the counter basically ignore me (walk right by me without acknowledging my presence). No "Someone will be right with you". A few times I have walked away in disgust. I was expecting some premium ingredients, but wasn't sure if I was able to find any. There were some generic bacons for prices way above than other stores. When I first moved to the Bay Area in 1984 (has it already been that long?), I lived in Belmont and regularly did my grocery shopping at Bell Market. On special occasions I would take a short drive over to the San Mateo border and stop at the old Petrini's. Petrini's was the first large grocery store chain to specialize in quality gourmet food, and Frank Petrini thus created model that has been followed since by many grocers, including Draeger's. I stocked my kitchen from this store too, although Petrini's was always the Butcher Shop that suited me best. Petrini's was long ago swallowed up by Provigo, Bell Market is called something else, but Draeger's still stands proud. I just happened to be in the neighbourhood recently and enjoyed stopping by and looking around. There were lots of appealing gourmet food options in every aisle, although the lateness of the day made had the Bakery section a little bare. Upstairs was housewares and the coffee shop. I ended up with a few pre-dinnner snacks and a resolution that I should come back to the Peninsula more often. I also got to thinking about how layed my grocery shopping has become over the years, starting with Grocery Outlet for the cheapest of certain basics. Safeway, Lucky, Lunardi's, Diablo Foods, Mollie Stones, Whole Foods, and of course Draeger's all have their place on the quality/cost/convenience/splurge/specialty continuum. read more

I noticed it was weird that their produce section was way in the back of the store. And all their processed foods are very highly priced. Kind of alongside Lunardi's Market pricing. I hate having to write this, but after shopping here for over 7 years, I WILL NEVER COME BACK. The customer service in the this store has always been lacking, but I continued to shop here for lunch meat, and an occasional birthday cake. There is an elderly woman working in the "charcuterie" dept., that is beyond rude. It's one thing to continually mess up an order, on EVERY visit, but being argumentative and rude about it is a different issue. I've always been polite and tried to be patient, no matter how many times my order was incorrect, and no matter how overtly rude she was. On a few visits, other staff actually apologized for her behavior, and told me she was being urged to retire. Yesterday, I was DONE. More screw-ups to my order than I have space to write, and her level of rudeness was over the line. I asked to speak with a manager, and was told there wasn't one . (Although, on my way out the door, I spoke with the manager.) She proceeded to roll her eyes at me, tell me how rude I was, that I was nasty, and she did all this very loudly in front of another customer. As I told her, I was nice the last 11 times, regardless of her rude argumentative behavior. For the prices they charge, I'm done putting up with this kind of behavior. Whole Foods might mess up an order, BUT they are never rude. As the old folks, (who are the bulk of their customers) die off, I wonder if the next generation of shoppers will overlook the lack of customer service when there are cheaper, more pleasant places to shop nearby. read more

Well.. It's a "high end" grocery store...they sell lots of gourmet food products and the prices are certainly not cheap. I usually come here to meet up with my gf for no fuss no frill breakfast on Sundays. They have a little cafe serving breakfast and lunch on the second floor. The deli and bakery at Draeger's are always mouth watering. I hardly resist not to get anything from them. I never got anything from the bakery but they all look sooooo beautiful, scrumptious and fresh. They are not cheap though hehehe. I got a few things from the deli. I liked their rotiserrie chicken. It was fresh and juicy...a tad pricey.. I think it was like $6 for a half chicken (at safeway .. you probably get a whole chicken!)..but to their defense.. it's all natural chicken :). The deli servers are usually very nice. They would be more than happy to give you samples. One time, they even gave me a sample for their BBQ ribs!!! I ended got a couple ribs for my dinner... they were a tad dry when I got home though.. bummer! The prime rib was also pretty good..although I wish they would have some au jus sauce with it! Unfortunately.. my grocery budgets are safeway level.. Draeger's is a bit too pricey for my daily grocery.. well at least for now.. until I win a lottery maybe.. read more

Can't disagree with that, but it ain't suppose to be cheap, people! It's the Draeger's. If nothing else, come here for a better experience of a small chain of local stores. Better yet, come to their San Mateo location - it's the largest of them all and very impressive, with fresh organic exotic produce, cheeses, deli and bakery, and of course the Viognier restaurant upstairs! So getting back to this loc in Menlo Park, it's the second best of the three, for it's still a bit larger than one in downtown Los Altos, with the second story and a little better vibe overall. read more
