I really love the look of their menu , it's so cool and fun to look at . The food is good overall. It may not be the best Chinese restaurant I've tried, but it's definitely not bad at all. I especially enjoyed the beef skewers ,they're my favorite dish here. The orange chicken is tasty too. The desserts were just okay, they look fun and cute, but the flavors were a bit simple for my taste. The staff are very nice, friendly, and quick, which made the experience even better. We love our server (the white girl, I forgot her name), but the food is never really good. We've tried a good portion of the menu and the only items that are good is the fried rice. The soup dumplings are decent, but they are frozen, which kind of just seem like false advertising because on the menu, it says something about 16 hour long broth. The skewers are just okay too. The Mapo tofu is a fucking death trap. There is so much mala in it that my mouth was buzzing and it taste medicinal. And before anyone says that it's supposed to taste like that, it's not. I'm Chinese and it's not supposed to taste like CHM. Also, they charge for water and while that's not illegal, it definitely is scummy. read more

The waitress's rec for my friend who really wanted something Szechuan spicy was not spicy at all - tasted like it was spiced with red pepper flakes and some other hot sauce that just seemed really greasy. We also asked for more bok choy since there was only 2 pieces in the whole dish and they charged us $2 for that. I didn't think that was very fair. When asking for water, be sure to be ready to pay for bottled because they don't serve tap. You must buy a beverage. Just based on the chong qing noodles, this isn't really authentic Chinese food. The flavor wasn't bad, but it just wasn't legit. It was pretty salty and oily, and it just felt like a soup with a bunch of random stuff in it. No big chunks of meat or anything, and the noodle texture wasn't like hand-pulled noodles. Service was good, though, and the space was large and interesting. It's open pretty late, so it's a good enough spot to eat at if it's late at night and you need a legit meal. read more

This is a hole in the wall restaurant. The parking is there but not good. Looks like it is mainly for college students walking or scooter to get there. Dragon Flame is definitely a feast for the eyes. Everywhere you look there's something to see - - more than one Chinese dragon, stuffed food pillows, lights projected onto the fan, anime characters on the wall, and more. There is a greenery lined patio with seating and its own dragon, a bar with seating, (I'm not sure if they serve any alcohol, but there is an ice cream machine) and a dining room lined with banquette seating, and a regular table. There's some clutter in the corners and behind the bar, and two little pet bowls on the floor - - when we've been here before the owner has come with his two little shih tzu dogs who are allowed to hang out in the dining room. It's is a unique and fun atmosphere. They have menus that look like doors to a Chinese Palace, but it really is just to show you what the most popular dishes are. To see the full menu you scan the QR code, then order on your phone. The order automatically goes to the kitchen and someone will bring you your food. If you like cumin, this is your place! Each time we've come I've noticed there is a lot of cumin. My son really likes it. I wasn't very hungry, so this time we shared one order of cumin chicken, one order of beef skewers, and one egg roll which we cut in half. These are shareable size portions, so we had a lot left to take home after two of us ate. We didn't have dessert, but I do know that people come here specifically for that. They have ice cream that looks like real fried chicken legs, and little molded milk cakes that look like bears and other animals. The parking here is a nightmare. There is a very small parking lot in front, and a small parking lot in back, but some of the spaces and back are designated for the other businesses in this time strip. There's really no other parking because the street is off limits and it is surrounded by apartment buildings. We have actually had to leave and eat someplace else before because of the parking situation. Also, with the dog bowls on the floor, I would presume that, like we saw when we were there last time, little dogs come through and hang out in the restaurant. It doesn't bother me so much, but I think my husband's head would explode if there were dogs roaming free inside a restaurant dining room he was eating at. Chaotic in the absolute best way! Decor was Alice in Asian wonderland, how to order took a minute to understand, and I'm still not sure if they serve wine (I do know they serve beer!) But even writing this review a few days later, I'm contemplating going there again...maybe tonight...maybe right now The food was top tier delicious and large enough to share! One night it was kinda late, and we looked for places and called them to see if they were open till 2. They said they were and last order was about 1 am. Had one of my friend go in a little earlier and placed the order. We had all the food by the time the rest of us reached. The owner was really nice, he came and had a nice conversation with us , the food was great. The flavors were limited to coconut, but I love a good coconut dessert. They were less ice cream and more of a creamy jello like consistency though. Traditional Chinese food in Tempe? Yup -- and it slaps. Dragon Flame Chinese Grill is the real deal, so go ahead and forget your usual orange chicken order. We tried the lemon chicken first -- crispy, juicy, and massive pieces of chicken. Way better than orange chicken, no exaggeration. Then came the Chong Qing noodles: spicy, full of depth, and packed with that rich, flavorful bone broth. Comfort food at its finest. And I couldn't resist the lamb skewers -- tender, smoky, and just the right amount of char. If a Chinese spot has lamb skewers, it's always a yes from me. We added the cucumber salad for some balance (aka to feel a little healthier ), and honestly, it was refreshing and tasty. The portions? No joke. We left with full bellies and a take-home bag. I went to the LA Rams victory over the Minnesota Vikings Wild Card game this week and was hungry after the game and decided no fast food, time to celebrate their 27-9 victory! Hmmmm......late night Chinese sounded good and I found the Dragon Flame less than a mile from my hotel (actually a motel called the University Inn) Easy parking, there were people dining around 1130pm which is a good sign. I wanted to try several dishes so here is my take on the four I ordered: 1) Lamb skewers*****. very tasty and quite perfect. They were not chewy at all as others have commented but tender, juicy and flavorful. 2)) Steamed (soup) dumplings*** 1/2*; my issue is I compare with the perfect soup dumpling from Din Tai Fung and these are not close but were still tasty. Not sure how to prevent them from tearing when lifting from the steaming paper 3) Shrimp Fried Rice**** some crazy 1800 year old recipe is used but this is a great dish. They pride themselves on the generous egg laden dish. This is a good dish, generous portion and very tasty. 4) Scallops** unfortunately this was my least favorite dish and would have gotten a single star mainly since the scallop was not good (bad since this is a center stage of this dish) BUT the surrounding glass rice noodles and accoutrements were actually very tasty elevating this dish to 2 stars. I do not recommend ordering this dish. 5) Mexican Coke***** always a winner to wash down a late night meal. Service was great, attentive. The location is fine near the university (Arizona State University) which is awesome for the students looking for late night better than fast food. Food is a solid 4 star but being open until 2am means another star for us late night diners! read more

I would do a 0 but pineapple chicken did not taste like pineapple and strings of egg in the chicken fried rice, red flag. Waitress used same rag to wash tables and did not wash hands. It tasted fine but got to our hotel room and had to stay there for the evening due to multiple trips to the bathroom that ruined our evening. We went back to complain and had to text owner or manager for a refund and he did not believe us had to investigate and i text him back after a day and now over a week no refund. This review is based on my experience 3 weeks ago. The food- was very good. We ordered the beef skewers, qon ping noodles, orange chicken and some desserts. The skewers were very tasty, smoky, grilled and were my favorite. The orange chicken was also good, and came in a large plate. It could easily feed 2-3 people. We also had dumplings- which were a bit dry but it was okay. The noodles were spicy and a bit oily. I did think it lacked something. Overall though, I did enjoy the food. Our desserts were unique and Instagram worthy. We tried the dragons breath and ours did not come in a goblet which was part of the novelty. It was still interesting. We had the ice cream fried chicken. And although also very picture worthy, it was hard as rock and could tell it was frozen beyond means. The ice cream inside was very icy. We also ate the doggie shaped pudding type dessert. It was very good and came in a cute box. The ambience- we walked in and it was very hot. It looked like their ac unit was not working as they had some ac service workers going in and out of the restaurant. There was a big fan in it's place and it was only helpful in some areas. It is a small place inside, a bit crowded and filled to the brim with Chinese decor. You'll also notice two small maltese dogs hanging around as you eat. I have a maltese at home so it didn't bother me but they definitely would just lay anywhere in between tables and I did worry they could get stepped on. They seemed used to people though. Service- there looked to be only one server and a busser/assisted server. The one server was running around, tending to all the tables, but that meant you won't really get much attention unless you wave them down, which could be common in Asian establishments. But the server was very nice and was understanding. I could tell he was doing the best he could in the hot restaurant. Overall, the food was good. There were some dishes that looked like something I would try. The restaurant does seem quaint and local. I'd be back to try their other dishes. read more

What else can I say but WOW, at the risk of outing this Tempe gem. Best Soup Dumplings I've had in a looooooong time. The Kung Fu Fried Chicken has this amazing flavor and the chicken is properly brined to be crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The dessert fried chicken ice cream is like nothing I've had and definitely worth the try. The owner is overwhelmed by the popularity. What a nice man. Be patient. What's up humans! On a bit of a roll here, back with one of my fav cuisines, Chinese. No need to yap, let's get to the hap, here it is: Cucumber Salad (Dumpling Mate) - Kind of crazy, I know, but this was my favorite dish. Super refreshing, loaded up with all the right fixings and sauces, yoooo, listen when I tell you, order this. I'd go back just for this salad. Bone Broth Mapo Tofu - My second favorite dish!! Super silky, soft tofu, topped off with a legit house sauce and fresh veggie toppings, flames for sure, another must order for me. The sauce was so good I started sipping my food in it haha Chong Qing Noodle - Awesome dish, on the spicy side, kind of reminded me of a beefed up Dan Dan noodles (which I love). Broth was hot and spicy, hit the spot and would be an awesome winter dish. Bone Broth Chili Dumplings - A lot of dishes had Bone Broth (which they make in house over a 16 hr process) and peanuts, which I love. These were solid, nice kick to em, again the sauce was delish and I preferred them over the steamed dumplings but both were good. Steamed Dumplings - 1800 year old recipe and it didn't disappoint. Good flavor, steamed nicely, good app for sure. Herbal Tea - I'm on a tea crazy right now since giving up coffee, this drink beats out coke in China every year in sales (according to the restaurant).
