I've shopped around for various craft supplies and hobbycraft isn't as expensive as i thought it would be, it has the added bonus of being all under one roof. I don't agree with previous comments that it's a shop for lazy people, if you are short on time then it's the best place. Smaller more personable hobby shops which are lovely will inevitably be more expensive and smaller in size including options for stock so it depends what you are after. i used to buy online from independent sellers but you do get less for your money and if you are intending to sell your items you create like i do, every penny makes a difference. Another good place to check out is local garden Centres, would be surprised the things i've found! They sell an abundance of Christmas crafts, ribbon, buttons, pendants, beads, modelling craft, decoupage, flower arranging, kids crafts and art work, cake decorating icing/ materials and that's just down stairs! It does get very bust on weekends, deducting a star for the times i've had to wait in the que for half and hour or more. They do seem to lack the correct number of staff in my opinion but the staff they do have are helpful as can be. If you are just starting off looking for a new hobby or unsure where to go with some craft ideas, just go for a visit, your not obligated to buy anything. You'll get 1001 ideas and inspirations :)

For what it is though (craft shop for lazy people) it is pretty good as they have a wide selection of materials and pretty much everything you need under one roof. I have to admit using this one in particular as it is nice and big and I know they will have the specific item I'm looking for. If only the prices were that little bit cheaper. Sorry, scrap that, if only the prices were a lot cheaper, it would be a pretty good chained store. As it stands at the moment it is quite frankly a rip off.

They are reasonable priced too. They have a good range of tapestries and thread as well as the cross stitch.. I do find the staff are aloof and unhelpful and it is not a childfriendly shop which is a shame.

Before Christmas, my wife and I visited Cheltenham for the day from Birningham and my wife bought some ribbon from this shop. When we got home, my wife said that she wished she had bought more so I telephoned the shop who were quick to identify the ribbon from the description I gave them, directed me to a web site to double check we had the right one and, because they did not have the quantity I wanted in stock, ordered from the wholesaler, informed me when it was available, took payment over the phone and posted the ribbon to me. At all points, I was dealt with politely and efficiently. The order was only very small - just a few pounds - but I was nevertheless given the impression that my custom was important. I have worked in customer service all my life and tend to by hyper critical but I found my experience with this shop to be first class.

I love this place and should carry a backpack or large tote bag every time I visit. On one occasion I thought, "I'll have a peek at the other shop and see what they have... or... I could just go straight to the yarn." So I went straight to the yarn! While the shop is small and makes for very cozy shopping when there are lots of customers (and I never see the place dead), they manage to pack a lot of items into the shop. I would almost say that they have more selection of colors and style of yarn than my local Hobbycraft! At the back is the yarn, careful if the door is shut as some customers/staff come through the back door as you are browsing. There are knitting needles, crochet hooks, and other various items hanging on the back wall/door as well. Some of the skeins are in cubbies, some are in baskets on the floor, and there is another shelf with bags of yarn. I thought at first I needed to ask to get into the bags, however, the staff are usually quite busy, so help yourself. In the area next to the yarn is fabric and in the center of the store is a table to measure and cut fabric. The front of the store seems to be more for buttons, needles, ribbons, and other sewing supplies. They do take credit cards if you are building your yarn stash, but there are cash machines nearby if you are just buying small items. Some of the staff are very friendly, others not so much, but they are helpful and efficient, which I think is more important. Although when one of the men that work at the store bagged up my yarn, he very kindly said, "If the colours are not correct, please come back and we will help." I like that as sometimes the dye lots are not the same or you are buying from memory. I haven't yet asked if they can special order yarn, but with the amount of business they do, I get the feeling that they may be able to help.

The shop has a keep back service on the wool for a month if you can not afford it all at onceloads of patterns but it can be difficult to browse these properly as space is so limited and only a little shelf where all the pattern books are kept.
