Drake & Morgan is a restaurant which specialises in cocktails, located a short walk from Kings Cross and St Pancras stations, in the new "Great Northern" development between King's Cross station and the shops and eateries of Coal Drop Yard. The restaurant is pretty big, with a spacious high-ceilinged ground floor room (I'd guess with at least 50 covers) and an even larger but more intimate dining area downstairs. Seating is a mixture of tables, banquettes. The decor features lots of black shiny tiles, particularly in the bathrooms (which also have black ceilings and floors), which makes them a bit gloomy, although atmospheric... But they were spotlessly clean. We dropped by for lunch. Stopping outside at 12 noon, we saw the brunch menu posted outside, and thought it offered us a reasonable range of options. As we were being shown to our table, we asked the member of staff at the entrance whether this menu was still available, and he told us it was. I have to say he was pretty cool and offhand with us; but more of that later. When the waitress arrived, the menus she gave us were for lunch (and cocktails), which had rather fewer options for me; I'm vegetarian but the only options available to me you were in fact all vegan. I asked about the breakfast menu and she said that had ceased being served at 11:30. We pointed out that the menu was still outside, and she said she would get it sorted. She was very pleasant and amenable. In the end, I ordered the Rainbow bowl salad, at £15.95. My friend ordered the similar duck salad, at £16.95 with us. I had a sparkling water £3.25 and my friend the first of two glasses of Pinot Grigio £9.95. The food arrived reasonably quickly, and the waitress was very pleasant. Afterwards, my friend had the gooseberry crème brûlée at £8.95 (and his second glass of Pinot Grigio) and I had the breakfast tea. With a donation to the Maggie's Cancer charity, and service charge at 12.5%, the total bill for lunch came to just over £78 (so, without the wine, about £55). The food was perfectly flavourful and there was a reasonable amount of it, but it was on the pricey side for a casual lunch. But that would not have mattered were it not for the service from other members of staff. As well as our frosty door manager, I went to the main counter to ask the manager and the bar waiter where it was. They said it was on the lower floor; when I asked the way they said "down the stairs", as if that were obvious and I was an idiot. I asked where the stairs were, and they pointed them out (on the other side of the restaurant, and behind a partition, from where we'd been seated). None of this was done with anything approaching a smile, which struck me as patronising and supercilious. When we left, another couple said goodbye to the doorman; without even looking up, or smiling, he mumbled a goodbye. So really, only our waitress was pleasant, and the three gentlemen didn't make us feel welcome at all. This was a hit or miss depending on how you see things. First off, the restaurant is beautiful. It's located in a business area next to lots of eatery. The grand entrance with the flower arch is beautiful. Patio seating looks out to the courtyard and all the chairs offer blankets for the chilly days/nights. We checked in with the hostess for a table which was seat yourself outside. The downfall with sitting outside was, you would have to go inside to the bar to place your order. There's a number on each table that you have to tell the bartender when ordering. There seemed to be one bartender the time I was ordering which did take a while. The two other guest ended up ordering from someone else and was done before I even had a chance to order. I don't know if he was new or overwhelmed, but it was slow. It did take a while to received our food as well. People that ordered after me did get theirs way before us. Food, was ok. The flatbread was good but nothing major to rave about. The halibut I believe it was, that was quite nice. Served with a nice curry sauce. Chicken skewers, very dry and the halloumi was ok. Margarita was nice which was great. They didn't have the rose I wanted but was offered something else. Overall, service was ok. Ambiance was pretty chill outside. But the whole layout is quite nice. One of our favorite breakfasts in London! We stopped here before catching our train out of town and we're so happy we did! The atmosphere is gorgeous, the staff was super friendly and the food... wow!! We each ordered cappuccinos and for our meals, had the Veggie Full Breakfast and Eggs Benedict. Every piece of my veggie breakfast was so flavorful and well seasoned. Each bite was phenomenal! My husband enjoyed his meal as well and said it was his favorite Eggs Benedict he had during our stay. We had a party of 20 for a business dinner on a Wednesday night so they asked that we submit our orders for appetizer, dinner, and dessert days in advance. When we arrived, each of us had a table card with our orders on them; all they needed to do was match the seat with the order. You would think that it would make servicing the table simple. Despite all of this pre-planning, the waitress was having difficulty getting the correct meal to the right person and there were multiple requests for drinks that were either overlooked or completely forgotten. The food itself was OK, but the service was embarrassing considering all of the planning that had gone into the meal. I ordered a double Woodford Reserve and the pour was barely 1oz. The decor and vibe here is so chic. Definitely a good place to grab a drink after work. While that wasn't what I stopped in for, I did enjoy my meal! For appetizers, we ordered beef croquettes with garlic sauce and the Roman fries (truffle, Parmesan & rosemary seasoned). I wasn't too fond of the beef croquette because it tasted like the beef was seasoned with a middle eastern spice. I do like middle eastern spices but I feel like it didn't pair well with the beef. As for the truffle fries, I expected it to be more truffle flavored rather than the top just seasoned. As for my main dish, I had the fish and chips. Nothing spectacular here. I'll be up front: as a rule I don't like Drake & Morgan joints. I find them soulless, watered down and way too "marketed for women." Which isn't to say they're actually bad places - just really not my style. But then again they serve a purpose: they provide a place for people to go to instead of the bars that I frequent. This new flagship venue however is another story. Don't tell anyone, but I actually really like it. Dark matte colours, gold accents, kind of Art Deco and the food was amazing. The head chef used to work at The Electric House and has brought his A game. And you can get food all freaking day, which is a massive plus in my world. This place is also freaking massive. We sat at the bar area where we could see the food being made and it was interesting. We saw one of the helpers sneezing directly into her hand and continued to handle food. We ordered fhe fried courgettes but they were drenched in oil, literally inedible. Our server was kind enough to remove it from our bill. I got the eggs benedict, which was fine except the bread that was incredibly soggy. My sister got the avocado toast which was ok. We had to keep asking for things like salt and pepper, sugar etc which all other tables had in front of them. Beautiful place but would not recommend the food! read more

We all went for the same meal - the Wagyu burger with blue cheese and tomato chutney. I asked for my burger rare, and was told by the waitress they would only cook it medium. That's ok, I'm used to that in the UK, and I was assured it was still nice and pink in the middle. I was expecting a nicely textured, pink centered, good quality burger. What I received was a tiny, over cooked, chewy patty. At £13.95 I was not impressed. The tomato chutney was nice, but they were over generous with it. I couldn't taste, and could barely see, the blue cheese, even when I looked for it. The bun was nice. Between us we shared the £9.95 trio of fries. The sweet potato were lovely, it's hard to go wrong there. The Roman fries (parmesan, truffle and rosemary) were disappointing - the truffle went unnoticed and the parmesan was a few stingy shavings. The Cowboy fries (honey, chilli and garlic) just tasted like fries which were drowning in barbecue sauce. Service was ok. A bit unknowledgeable, but friendly and reasonably quick. I won't be going back though, the food just wasn't up to scratch. In an area of Kings Cross with so many other, decent, options, Drake & Morgan need to up their game. read more

New space in a blossoming part of town. So much this is now becoming the place to open up. Bars, restaurants, tech co's. It's all happening. I must say the vast size of his space is HUGE. It's not intimate. Even has an outside nice terrace like many other places in area. The downstairs bar is deceptively big. Or so I thought...the mirrors make it bigger than you think but it's still a lovely space. The canopes we were given were ok. Tuna stand out. But the cocktails were very good. And that's what you should judge it on. All in all I'll be back to see it when it's more filled up on a weekend. read more

Alex the manager was amazing. He's exactly what restaurants and bars should be hiring when running the place. He is Mr. hospitality 101. We discovered this modern, open & chic restaurant as a pre-theater spot for a lovely meal. Since we had no reservations we sat at the bar in front of the open line where the Chef and his hardworking team prepare tantalizing items on great planks of carving board. We started with a very generous cheese selection. Nice French wine selection. Our steak was perfectly prepared and the truffled crispy potatoes should grow in infamy and become a signature dish. Went to this place for a late lunch to celebrate a birthday. The food was mediocre. The service in this restaurant could be drastically better. Although the place was almost empty due to the time, they asked us to leave our table after we had just ordered our second bottle of wine! I found this incredibly rude, and if the table was in fact booked for a certain time, then we should not have been seated there in the first place. They could have at least told us in advance when the table would be needed. We weren't even seated for long enough to justify asking for the table back. The food was disappointing as well. All the burgers were only prepared well-done, and the buns were served burnt. The roman fries were decent. For desert, the brownie and ice-cream was tasty. We ordered two bottles of a Cab and this was the highlight of the meal. This place was rammed at 8 pm on a Friday. We booked a table in the noisy downstairs bar area, where you need to order from the bar rather than servers (and the menu is more limited). Service at the bar was abysmally slow, so do be warned it could take you upwards of 15 minutes to order a drink. They do offer non-alcoholic cocktails on the menu, which were all a little bit less tasty than they sounded. Both the Pear and Ginger Cooler and the Garden Fizz sounded like they would be fruity and flavorful, but both, particularly the latter, were fairly watery rather than juicy and a little disappointing. For food, we shared a meat platter and a seafood platter. Meat platter came with sliced chorizo, sliders, chicken wings, chips, teeny little sausages, and loads of padron peppers. I didn't try everything, but the sliced chorizo with grilled bread was actually very good, and the chicken wings were very crispy with a wonderful maple chili glaze. The chicken wings are certainly a must try! I honestly can't remember if I had a slider or not - I think I did - but it was that forgettable that I'm not 100% sure. The chips were pretty craveable, but the padron peppers were sort of bitter and just felt like filler really - taking up a huge portion of the plate that could've been taken up with actual food. Seafood platter contained fried fish sliders, calamari, fried prawns on sticks, and I think some onion rings as well as more chips and peppers. The fried prawns were really crispy and tasty and came with yummy Asian-y dipping sauce. The calamari wasn't bad - rather small pieces, and not as crisp as they could be, but still good. I skipped the sliders, but the onion rings were pretty nice. So in all, the food was hit or miss - 3 stars for the food, but the laborious process of ordering and the eternity we waited for one of the platters to arrive soured me on the place a bit. Also the watery cocktails and really noisy environment turned me off. If you do go, try getting a table with table service and order the chicken wings. They have outdoor seating as well which looked nice. read more

St Pancras Station is served by lots of fast food places but, when you've just spent the last couple of hours singing a performance which, in all honesty, didn't go as smoothly as you would've liked, a decent meal is all Stuart and I really wanted. We ended up at Drake and Morgan, set a way back from the station and the road but it was the only place open that had something on the menu we could eat! It was almost full of diners when we arrived but they found us a table for 2. I'd already decided to go for the Halloumi Burger and Stuart opted for the Fish and Chips. It's a big venue, as it has a bar downstairs and the waiters seemed to disappear out of view! However, we were served promptly and we'd both chosen non alcoholic cocktails. My Ginger Mimosa was really nice and refreshing, unfortunately Stuart's Garden Fizz had fizz but little flavour! My arm was twisted to have dessert as they had creme brulee on the menu (a personal favourite if made well!) with a trifle for him. Whilst there wasn't a great vegetarian selection for us to choose from, we were tired and just grateful that they served our food promptly. Proximity to the train station, one of the hottest days in London and two glasses of wine on an empty stomach led me to seek out food in the shaded terrace at Drake&Morgan. Lovely setting in Pancreas Square and it's so nice to be able to sit outside on a nice day. This place has a good atmosphere. It was really busy with some people eating but mostly people enjoying after work drinks yet it felt cosy and not too noisy. Service was impeccable and the staff were really fantastic. However the biggest letdown for this place is the food. I ordered steak medium and it was extremely tough so definitely had better for the price. On entering the perfectly nice, but slightly distant maitre d's, did little to endear us to this place, it just felt a bit like we did not matter and there was no love. It was just an operation. Here on a Friday night the average age is about 25, full of young flashy people probably pretending they have more money than they do. The decor is flash over the top design, with tiny bits of rustic trimmings. The downstairs bar has loud music, probably designed to keep older people away which is probably what that crowd want. Many people are definitely there to pull! However on the ground floor is a bar and restaurant area, which is not so loud because of it's distance from the basement bar area. The fact it is mainly promoting the cheaper mass beers and not the finer craft beers shows it's level and of course there is nothing wrong with that. The menu is quite mass appeal, with dishes you would find in classy places like raw tuna and normal things like fish and chips. The food is a mid range price of about £12.50 for a main and is decently cooked without being remarkable. All in all perfectly good for the price. My fish and chips had batter that was not too soggy and was freshly fried, but without the crispyness of a master fish and chips place. The raw tuna had a good marinade, but made with average grade tuna and had not soaked up the marinade enough to mask it's medium toughness. For the price was perfectly fine. The excellent table waiters had personal charm, enthusiasm and sophistication, that did lift it and did make a big difference! Most people had gone there after work from the local offices and that was it's market. As a result over half had left by the later evening as for them it was just a post work thing. Speaking to some others downstairs, they gave the impression that it was interesting to the because it was new. It does not have the brilliance of other places nearby, that has given them long term appeal and even made people come to the area especially for them. I went with a group from work and our consensus is as follows: - calamari: tasty but too tough to chew. sent all but the crunchy end bits back. - fish n' chips: Meh "I've had better fish n' chips" people didn't finish this dish - veggie thai curry: rice was tasteless and over-cooked to point of being soggy. curry sauce had no flavor and required salt. veggies were meh. Pea pods still had stems attached that required diners to disengage the tough string and stem. Who serves them this way!??!? - cheeseburger: they forgot the cheese. need i say more? - brownie with ice cream: ice cream was tasty with bits of ice. brownie was very very dry and had very little flavor and was not sweet. Service was somewhere between neglectful and almost enough attention. Atmosphere was noisy (I could only hear the person directly next to me, not the person next to them, even when shouting). It was my first time at this place and I literally have no complaints because it came up trumps on every single category: Great, friendly, efficient, polite, quick and accommodating service? Check. A cool, chic, laid back decor and atmosphere? Check. A good range of greatly made, well presented cocktails (we ordered six different cocktails and each one was at least a 7/10)? Check. Yummy food, great portions (apart from if you go for appetisers at the bar), good quality and, again, a wide selection to choose from? Check. All in all, this place had all the right ingredients to make it a perfect date night out or after work with the colleagues. She got some sort of tea martini and I got something with gin. As for food, I ordered the lamb and she had the fish. The lamb was decent... Not spectacular, but not bad. My friend said the fish was lackluster as well. We also had a superfood salad to share, that of which was, again, average. I was taken out for a work lunch in a group of eight people. The host was friendly, and the space was impressive. As other reviewers have said, it is massive. We were provided with still or sparkling filtered water that kept coming (I didn't pay the bill, so I don't know if there was a charge for this, but I would have been surprised if so as they didn't ask before bringing more). Service was great to start with, our server checked in to see how the temperature was, and remembered who had still or sparkling water. There was a long pause of about 30 minutes before we ordered, but there was also a lot of conversation, so it was possibly that he was being thoughtful. I ordered the halloumi burger with "roman fries" (truffles, rosemary and parmesan). For seven of us, food arrived surprisingly quickly. Probably under 10 minutes from ordering. Everyone's food came out except the boss. Of course. She suggested we go ahead, so people started gingerly picking, but it was awkward. Hers came out 10 minutes later. NB, it was the only cold dish of the table, a cobb salad (which, as a side note, she said she found very disconcerting since it's usually a wedge of lettuce, and this was deconstructed, which she didn't like). My burger was...interesting. Halloumi cheese, which I love. On a "brioche style" bun. I say style because it was yellow and a bit sweet, but had none of the crisp edges or depth of flavour of a good one. It also had: a portabello mushroom; a whole roasted pepper; hummus; salsa. It kind of felt like the chef had thought "what goes on a veggie burger?" and put all of them together. It wasn't offensive, but it wasn't good-- there was no need for the hummus, the pepper was slimy, and the halloumi was warmed but not browned or grilled, which kind of misses the point. No sides with the burger, but as I wasn't paying I got fries as well. 4.50 for a small cup of fries! They smelled like truffles, but didn't taste of them, and required a lot of salt. Basically your average frozen restaurant chips. They put dessert menus down and left us to ponder for 15 minutes, and took orders. Everyone got coffee, the last guy to order (boss on their side) also got dessert of ice cream. At this point I'm nervously looking at my watch, wondering if I can make it to my next meeting, I'd thought 90 minutes was plenty for a business lunch. Which it should have been, really. But it took 25.minutes.for.coffee.and.icecream. OMG, I thought I was going to go berzerker. I think I wasn't the only one because everyone seemed to down their coffees, other boss gobbled his ice cream, and we all left within 10 minutes of getting it. Missed the other meeting, by the way. Basically, if I were paying, I wouldn't come here. It's crazy expensive for what you get, and the food isn't very good. Service is decent if slow/sporadic. A perfect setting for contemporary brunch culture. Me and my companion decided to explore the newly built area of kings cross and meet up for a romantic brunch. I firstly have to give credit for the convenient location, lovely modern 'innovative' atmosphere and the setting. This hip and trendy, yet not 'hipster' place offers a variety on their breakfast menu. The modern interior, floor to ceiling windows overlooking the garden setting and sleek but cosy interior made this experience memorable. Their fresh made smoothies and we'll set table (with that real plant) made the difference. The lighting, busy noise and the mixed crowd of tourists and locals made it a lovely atmosphere. My blueberry pancakes and butter sautéed spinach was perfect. Certainly a place worth splurging on once after a great night out or when you are meeting important people you need to somewhat impress. Really disappointing experience here today. Staff almost universally appeared to be having a bad day! My eggs benny arrived but every element on the dish was cold. Cold muffin, cold poached eggs. Approached the waitress to ask for a replacement who scoffed and told me that since the hollandaise was kept chilled, it would make the dish cold. Not any of the other 100+ times I've eaten it, including at another branch! Really unpleasant taste and the alternative dish I ordered was just okay. Coffee orders repeatedly forgotten, several elements on the veggie breakfasts for my friends also unpleasant including gritty spinach. Mandatory service charge on the bill (you have to ask for it to be taken off) left another type of bad taste in the mouth. Some serious quality control required in both kitchen and front of house, won't be returning. The branch just off the South Bank is a significantly better one though. read more
