We did not go to the restaurant so this is reviewing only the shop. It's insanely beautiful. Somehow it's listed in the Guinness Book as the most beautiful...not sure how much competition there is for beautiful dairy stores but it's covered, floor to ceiling, by 19th century Villeroy and Boch porcelain tiles (and somehow survived the bombings of WWiI). Go early! We were there ten minutes after opening, and there were already a dozen tourists taking selfies and photos. But it's a place of business - buy something! They have postcards for 1euro. Beautiful tote bags for 3 euros. They have a little drinks bar with fresh milk for 1 euro. They don't require you to buy anything but the people posing for portraits is annoying. Apparently the most beautiful cheese shop in the world, which is probably true. The decor was so beautiful and the shop was nice. It does small pretty funky in there though. The restaurant is upstairs and has a nice ambiance in there as well. It was hot though. They had a few options for cheese boards and we decided to get the regional cheese board. This was pretty good and some of the cheeses were really interesting. The dresdener cake was fluffy and pretty good. Trying it for the first time and it was kind of like a light and fluffy cheesecake with an egg cake inside. Not that sweet and also has a lemony flavor. The service was really friendly and quick. Our server was so nice. The restaurant was also definitely less crowded than the store which was pretty touristy. read more

This beautiful old German shop is actually really small and totally overrun by tourists, probably due to it being the set of the bakery in The Grand Budapest Hotel film. Staff seem overwhelmed and are very grouchy. It's really hard to move around in here due to all the tourists. Thus it was really hard to browse the items for sale and impossible to actually buy something. Ended up leaving after just a few minutes. Is there a time when this place isn't so busy it can actually be visited? read more

The most beautiful store ever. Make sure to walk upstairs for the restaurant/cafe! We came during Christmas time and there was barely anyone there. We ordered some desserts and drinks. the almond cake was very good but the poppy seed cheesecake was so so. I wanted to try the original cheesecake which is supposed to be very popular, but they were all sold out for the day. I would also pass on the chai latte as it was not very strong and heavy on the milk, but the rest of everything we got was very delicious! read more

On my most recent trip to Europe, I purposely booked a one-night stopover in the little town of Dresden, Germany just so I could visit the Pfunds Molkerei. Why, you might ask? Because this tiny shop provided the real-life filming location and setting for the fictional Mendl's Bakery in the Wes Anderson film "The Grand Budapest Hotel." I'm a huge movie nerd and an even bigger Anderson fan, so paying this place a visit was a real no-brainer. It's located in the outskirts of town. It technically is walkable from the main train station, but it's pretty far. It took us about an hour but we finally arrived. Yes, the shop has a ton of signs saying "no photos" are allowed inside, but we broke the rule with a little sleight of hand. The tile work is absolutely gorgeous, and it photographs well. The two women working the evening we arrived were far from friendly, which I found odd for a place that caters to tourists. The shop sells a few little overpriced touristy things like magnets, kitchen towels, and tote bags, but they also have chocolates and a cheese case with cheeses that are made elsewhere (wait, what?). There's a small area with a few tables where you can stand or sit and enjoy your chocolate or cheese snack. Overcome with curiosity, we decided to try a shot of liqueur that was made with milk. It was delicious, sort of like a more milky version of Kahlua. This isn't a place for foodies, it's a place for movie fans. We were the only customers in the shop, but I can imagine it would be miserably crowded when the giant tour groups arrive. I wasn't able to get a photo in the main part of the shop (seriously, folks, they will YELL at you if they catch you trying to snap a pic), but I was still a happy camper to have visited the "real" Mendl's Bakery. read more

It was a nice cheese shop, but I don't think it lived up to the hype. As of 2019, Google maps is off in location by about half a block. We went to the restaurant upstairs and got a East German Cheeseplate, black current buttermilk, and plain buttermilk. We also got an extra order of bread (1.5 eur). The buttermilks were a bit like a soft (non-Greek) yogurt, and the plain was naturally tart. The Cheeseplate had a nice variety. I think the price was fair, but I wouldn't recommend people go out of their way for this place. Also, service in the restaurant was decent, but it felt a bit cold when I first came in looking at the items for sale downstairs. As with what I'm finding in Dresden, using English here is a bit spotty. read more

I saw this sight before leaving for Dresdan. Thought it would be interesting. Visited the first Saturday in August 2015. Very touristy, it was hot, small and no A/C.when we first arrived ok but within minutes a large tour bus arrived. Not my thing. I'm a traveler not a tourist if you are a tourist and and not traveler, go for it. Gave 2 stars for the tile. Too many people to check out the goods! read more

This is a must see in Dresden for it's beautiful tiled interior and tasty cheese. It is listed in the Guiness Book of World Records as the most beautiful milk store in the world...and I'd have to agree as it is stunning! Upstairs is a nice konditerei serving quick meals and traditional desserts. If you arrive by car there is a parking lot behind the store. The beautiful tile and glasswares souvenirs are made in Meissen, famous for it's porcelain, and make great gifts or memories to take home. I bought six espresso cups and saucers to bring home. read more

A OK shop but be prepared to get yelled at if you try to take any photos. Not sure what the big objection is.....they have these gorgeous tiles all over the shop & one would think for a historical landmark and tourist-trap, this would warrant all the free advertising they could get & especially when tour buses filled with people pile in at all times & they are all just waiting to love you....but Pfunds is vehemently opposed to any photos They had jams, dish towels, candy, shopping bags & a cheese case ( although they didn't make any of the cheeses themselves - which is weird for a creamery ) Best thing we found & my best tip? Get the Contessa Pearls! These are like the German version of Austria's Mozart Balls & everyone LOVES those!! Marzipan covered in chocolate - yum! It stinks of cheese and dairy! Defintetely a tourist trap. The tiles are beautiful, but, when you re packed like sardines in there with the other tourists, and you re not allowed to take photos, then it feels Like you have just wasted your time. Complete waste of time. Horribly overpriced, junk stuff that's not even locally made, cheeses that they don't make themselves, and aren't very good. Plus, the second you walk in, you are being yelled at that photos aren't allowed. Add to that an obvious dislike for tourists (this IS a tourist trap, right?). They spend money to have the hop-on, hop-off bus stop right in front, and yet they treat their guests terribly. And, if you don't speak fluent German, forget it. They will pretty much ignore you. So, I'll take my camera and my Euro's elsewhere, where they are wanted. read more
