We had booked the NCP9 lifeguarding course for my daughter in February 2023, which was due to start during May 29th half term. She turned up for the course only to be told that the course had been cancelled. No apologies from the course management for the cancellation nor as to why we weren't informed of it at first. If we had known this earlier, we would have organised an alternative. Now, her plans and half term have been ruined thanks to a parade of incompetent dimwits. As for the refund, the staff have to speak to their head office about reimbursing the money (which they were more than happy to take). Hadn't they thought of speaking to us about the cancellation first?!?

Back then, Harborne pool was a fairly run down (but nevertheless charming) Victorian pool - with a high glass ceiling and changing rooms that lined the pool. I really used to enjoy swimming there - it was very peaceful. This recently opened new centre on the site of the old pool is also very good. It is BRAND NEW, and you can tell. The facilities are excellent and the pool is first class. They have also added a gym on the 2nd floor which makes the whole building look very impressive when you drive past. I've not used the gym, but judging by how busy the exercise bikes and running machines are in the wide window that overlooks the road, the gym is very popular also.

The abundance of squash courts is a major plus, I don't know anywhere else in striking distance which can boast 7 courts, including three glass backed for easy viewing. Also there are numerous facilities for activities including: badminton, dance, gym, tennis, swimming and located across the university: 5-a-side, rugby, football, martial arts etc. However, it is soon to be demolished (the track has already closed) and as a consequence it hasn't been updated in a long while. The gym is tiny, the pool is only 25m (not Olympic size as stated below) and the tennis courts are almost unplayable due to a huge number of cracks and shabby nets. The changing rooms are clean enough but the showers areas are grim and the shower-heads are only about 5'10" off the ground (I'm pretty average height and I have to squat to get my hair wet). There is also a small cafe/bar which is nice enough but underwhelming and an overpriced, rarely open sports shop (£8 for a pair of football socks). It's functional and a pretty good facility for students and the wider community but the new-build can't come soon enough as far as I'm concerned.

I was a member for about 2 years, although I am no longer for reasons I'll explain below. Firstly, the centre is part of the University of Birmingham. You can join as a non student and if you are alumni you will get a slightly cheaper rate. I joined for the swimming pool and you can get a swim only membership for a reasonable amount (it was about £12 a month I think when I was a member). The pool is great - longer than any of the other public pools at 30m. If you time it right you could get it to yourself but this is rare (university holidays are the best time for using the pool!). Basically membership works if you can work around the student timetable - it is out of use quite a lot although I think they always have it open for morning and lunchtime swims. This is why I'm no longer a member as I can't work around the limited availability of the pool. Do note though that during the university holidays they do often allow pay as you go membership which is fantastic because it is also the quietest time for the centre. The changing rooms are clean and bright. They also have a sauna there. Hopefully this has changed but when I was a member the ladies loos were awful with a terrible smell all the time! I have also done the pilates course at the centre, taught by Esther and she was excellent!

I've been coming to the Dance Workshop in Moseley for about 8 months now. It's right in the centre…read moreof Moseley and offers quite the variety of classes for children and adults. There are 3 dance studios located inside. One of them is a bit of a pain to learn in if your class is busy. It has a support pillar right down to the floor in the centre of the room. But the other two are brilliant with no obstacles and good sound systems to boot. What's nice about this place (besides it's great location, cafe on site and friendly staff) is the seasonal changing of the classes. I'm currently taking a beginners commercial dance that was just added in January. There is also a new dance fitness class that works every muscle in your body! Classes are generally between £5 to £7. You don't have to reserve a spot either. Just show up and pay that day. The only problem I found is if the class is not heavily attended it is cancelled. It's the drawback of offering drop in classes. People may not show! It happened to my zumba class twice. Which is why you should bring your friends! Whether you are passionate for dance, looking for a fun way to exercise, or just looking to meet people, Dance Workshop offers something for everyone!

That said, once I had located the place I was pleased by what I found. The centre was modern, with plenty of parking space and top notch facilities. Inside the changing rooms were clean and modern and there were plenty of lockers for valuables. The practice room itself was large and well lit, ample room for everyone that had attended, the only fault was the fact that noisy step aerobics class was situated in the neighbouring room which proved to be an interruption to the more tranquil class that I was attending. All in the Gmac is a great facility and it's great that a such a modern facility has been built purely for the disciplines of Gymnastics and Martial Arts.

I was stupid enough to go still with stupid long nails, so as a little point i'll say maybe don't do that yourselves to make the most of your time £10 for a day pass (I think 8 for members maybe?). There's a little cafe with cake, toasties, hot and cold drinks (soy etc available), basic changing rooms, loos, car park, and they do hold classes too. They provide little chalk bags, and let you get on with it on a range of colour coded courses, downstairs, and the small upstairs. The crash mats are generously deep and squishy, and there are some good challenges to get your fingertips stuck into. It was cold, which is the nature of the building, so i'd advise a hoodie you can take off once you're into it in the winter. I don't know how warm it gets in the summer months.

I am pretty good at climbing trees, so I decided to come here for a taster session for twenty…read morepounds. A taster session is the package that they recommended to me. They have walls from 18 feet to 44 feet high with different angles and surfaces so you can choose how far to push yourself, whether it be on a smooth slab or a fearless overhang. I was taught by a fully qualified instructor and all the safety helmet and harness were included in the price. The only problem I had was that my harness was attached a little too tightly in between my legs, this made it quite a painful experience. No matter how I Adjusted my gear the problem still pervaded. I would recommend the tester course here. Climbing is a fun and physical activity, I felt the calories burn the further up the wall I climbed. I'd much rather do this than go to a gym.

Creation has been in action since the days of Epic Skatepark and utilises the high ceilings of this former Bus depot. Walls on offer range from a free climbing area where you can climb without ropes or harnesses to the big stuff which entails ropes and a harness. I had a blast at Creation and found the staff to very helpful and keen to see new climbers join the more experienced regulars on the walls. There is a range of snacks, food and drinks available and you can even take a peek at the skatepark area if you fancy a fresh challenge!
