Kinsale is a beautiful port city located at the mouth of the Bandon River in south County Cork…read more It has a rich history going back a thousand years to the Anglo-Norman conquests. It had been called "one of the most significant harbors in Europe" and should not be missed. Even with all its history, Kinsale today is a beautiful seaside town, with picture postcard houses doting the harbor (photo) area. Temperatures tend to be warmer though mild, with a nice sea breeze. There's a several parks with benches if you get tired of walking. There are also a lot of seafood restaurants if you get hungry. Parking along the water is available and no one seems to mind if you park all day. Just a few miles/km away is Charles Fort (see Review) with it rich history. It is part of the OPS and has a beautiful view of the colorful downtown area. We stayed at Rivermount House B&B nearby, which we would recommend.

THE BEACON (BALTIMORE)…read more Been in Baltimore quite often but never made it out as far as the famous beacon until last Saturday. Built as part of a series after the 1798 rebellion, the landmark is also known as Lot's Wife. It wasn't there when the village was sacked by Algerian pirates in 1631 but over the centuries has been a welcome sight to home-coming seafarers. It is visible from the village and once you exit to the east is easily found. You park in a small cul-de-sac or even on the road before you come to it. The climb up is quite steep but, if you start further back, you will find an easier route to walk to the Beacon. Once up by the white-painted pointed pillar, you have views all around you, most notably to Sherkin Island across to the right and then the coastal cliffs on your left. Worth the short detour if you do call to Baltimore (which is the ferry port for the many islands on that beautiful stretch of coast).

Very interesting information regarding the events surrounding the sinking of the RMS Lusitania by the German submarine U-20. The headland and Old Head Lighthouse is on a private golf course, and access is denied to the general public, so the Signal Tower provides the best publicly accessible views of the beautiful Old Head area. After driving about 15 kilometers you will see a long hill and on the very top, a ruined castle. If you go up walking through the grass heading to the right side, you will be amazed by the view of the cliffs, the noise of the waves smashing the rocks and the smell of fresh air. And this view is completely free! The only problem is a big closed gate, which belongs to a golf course built some years ago that still raises protests as a big part of the land was made private.

We ate lunch in the clubhouse and had a fine selection of food. Service was great and the menu was well thought out. I would give them 5 stars but I got food poisoning from the oysters I ate there. After a long night I made it on my flight to Scotland with cold sweats and a green face. I was surprised somewhere this nice had bad shellfish. I'll go back again...but will mind the shellfish.

The lodging fees go to preservation of this Irish landmark. Highly recommend the views.

If anyone knows the difference between a causeway and a bridge, will they please let me know?…read moreBecause I honestly haven't the foggiest...I mean, to me this is a bridge, yet apparently for some reason it's called a causeway. Confusion reigns. Anyway, this is another beauty spot in West Cork, as you can look out onto Glandore Harbour and it's views...and keep an eye out for seals. It's so narrow that only one car can go across at a time...but there's space for 2 in the middle if you get stuck! Continuing the 'War of the Buttons' theme though, it is across the middle of the causeway that the rival gangs (á la the Sharks and Jets) draw the boundary, across which their opponents may never step on fear of...losing their buttons. Ain't Ireland quaint?!

It has a footpath on each side, but these disappear at the passing point in the middle. There are parts of it from where you can fish, and from what I know, you can catch some pretty big seabass there. I stayed about 1/2 a kilometre from it in summer 2011 in an area known as Droum Leap, and I can say that the area is rather beautiful and picturesque.
