Next to playing Pebble Beach and St. Andrews there is only one other place that would complete the trifecta that is Augusta. The feeling of jitters on the #1 hole with people surrounding the tee box is overwhelming but after hitting the fairway, I finally started breathing again and soaked in the round. I ended my round satisfied and celebrated it with a pint with my friends, a moment that will last forever. Cheers, I hope everyone gets to experience my lifetime wish!!

More signage for visitors who are only interested in looking around would have been helpful. As it was, we walked from the cathedral on a windy and stormy day. We lucked out and missed the rain completely, but you'll want to be prepared if you visit and have an umbrella handy (or better yet, a raincoat, as umbrellas are usually useless in the wind here). The club restaurant was packed, people were playing all of the courses. There was a small putting green but we weren't interesting in that. Nice to see once and take some pics. But no reason to really hang around. Most of the shops surrounding the course were closed as well. There were one or two small restaurants nearby open but we didn't bother to stop as they were all quite busy. This is one of those places you can see once, take some pics, and be satisfied.

We were worried when it snowed the night before but the course told us to come out anyways and would wait until the weather improved which it did. The club was founded in 1817 by some members of the St. Andrews Society of Golfers (later to become the Royal and Ancient Golf Club) who wished to play more golf than the Society's occasional meetings afforded them. James Braid redesigned the present Scotscraig layout in 1923 and it measures 6,669 yards from the back tees with par set at 71. There's plenty of heather and gorse to catch the wayward shot, though it is quite playable. Scotscraig doesn't sit next to the coastline so it is one of those enigmatic courses, which are hard to categorize, as it is neither true links nor heathland or even moorland, but instead is an interesting combination of them all. Since 1984, Scotscraig has hosted the Final Open Qualifying when The Open is played over St Andrews. When the Open returned to St Andrews in 2005, Scotscraig once again hosted Final Open Qualifying. Scotscraig is part of the Links with History program, along with Ladybank, Lundin Links, and Crail. A lot of memorable holes, including the 4th -- also liked 6, 7, 14 and 16 (and the greens were in great shape as well). A really nice course and a great value at £55.00.

Fast forward a few years to 2005 and there was a new owner of both The Old Course Hotel and the Dukes Course - Herb Kohler. Kohler owned the American Club, Blackwolf and Whistling Straits (not to mention the Kohler company) in the United States and his love of golf took him to Scotland. Kohler has never been one to rest on his laurels -- and he didn't just acquire the Old Course hotel and the Duke's -- he started to remake the whole experience. The first focus of attack was the hotel. Always classified as a deluxe, 5 star property, Kohler was determined to make improvements at the hotel. The upgrades were accomplished within little more than a year. Next, all of attention was turned to The Dukes Course where Kohler placed all of his energy and released his true passion for golf, revealing an eternal quest for perfection. The end result is a very good heathland layout has been transformed into a visually stunning layout. Now extended to 7,512 yards from the tips, as well as a lot of work with bunkering, which now includes a generous helping of traditional and very serious pot-bunkers. Trouble lurks at every turn. This is a good candidate for location if they ever make Nightmare on Elm Street, Freddy Kreuger Hits the Links. It's obvious that Kohler is a man with an awful lot of respect for the game of golf and takes a great pride in his all of courses. This might not be my favorite of his courses, some of the Dye courses are as visually intimidating, but also more playable. This course looks intimidating and will take every opportunity to bear its teeth and bite. 4 stars for the course. Herb Kohler gets 5.
