Hard to get a table for a big group inside or out on a Friday or weekend night, but that's to be expected; it's not that big of a place and it's in/near the heart of Brooklyn. Good food selection and some interesting beers (you'll probably find something you haven't had before and get it in a liter mug). This is a great German beer house. The beers are good and the wait staff is knowledgeable. The vibe is very relaxed. A great place to meet friends and get light pub fare- pretzels, wurst, even snitzel (get the pretzel!) Never crazy crowded (except maybe later on weekends, to be expected). Accidentally happened upon this casual biergarten when exploring the neighborhood. What a happy surprise! Can't believe I didn't notice this place before when I was looking for bars in the area - Die Stammkneipe is perfect for a relaxed liter of ale in a cozy space. The place is brightly lit with sofas, long tables, and a bar to sit at. Big TV to keep you posted on the evening's athletic events. They have a sort of kitschy/ rustic theme going on, with a lot of artsy deer heads. Vast selection of German beers on tap; the menu has detailed, poetic descriptions of each beer to help you decide. I tucked into a soft pretzel, which was super buttery with a crisp skin and soft crumb inside. The mustard was so fresh, it burned my nose. The dinner menu looks very hearty and tempting, will have to come back for a full meal. Everything was so reasonably priced, this place is quite a bargain. read more

We have been back to this place many times, it may not be perfect but its by far the best place to take a little kid (ours is 3yrs old) and they have the best German beer selection! The food is also really good, I ususally get the chicken weinershnitzel, the spatzle and truffle fries are also great. I didn't know what I was in the mood for, I just walked Brooklyn and let my eyes do the talking. I spotted this black building and thought it looked interesting, I guess this means I'm doing German. When I walked in I noticed the old style of the place, larger leather sofa, black and white tile floor, and a cozy fire place; that with modern music seemed to set a good vibe. It wasn't really for me but it was nice. I also noticed a large play Day with married couples and there kids. They had mats on the floor and baby toys out. It wasn't something I was use to seeing so I was a bit surprised. The table I was sat at was where they stacked all the strollers, another plus. When the waiter came over he wasn't very friendly, what would you like? I had a hard time reading the menu because I'm not familiar with the foods. I didn't want to ask for help because the waiter wasn't very approachable. I saw the truffle fries and the bratwurst so I guess that what I was getting. I was impressed by the fries and the bratwurst, I really wasn't a fan of the lightly toasted pretzel bun. They also were rationed out the condiments, which was awful because they do give you a good portion of fries. I really enjoyed the meal, I wasn't digging the atmosphere or the service. For me this place was a "one and done!" I just wish I could have asked how they made that bratwurst, it was good. read more

This bar did not present an itemized bill at checkout and overcharged me by five drinks. When I reviewed the receipt that was sent to my email and realized this, I went back when they opened the next day and was completely dismissed by the owners. They refused to do any investigation into the matter, accused me of lying to them, and were rude and very delayed about following up on the issue. For a neighborhood bar that I've visited many times, I was astounded at how they treat their customers. I would highly recommend you take your business elsewhere. read more

Came in for a beer to watch game 1 of World Series. Bartender had a movie playing on the projector. Asked him to put the World Series on and he gave me a ton of attitude. He pseudo tried to put it on but gave up due to the "equipment". Of course they could have the game on but he wanted to watch a movie instead. One of the great things I love about living in New York is when I have a food craving I that I'm able to satisfy it without having to travel too far. Today a beer n brat was on my mind. I am willing to try different types of meat as long as I'm not too "squirrelly" about it. (See what I did there? You're welcome.) Today I had the rabbit sausage. While this wasn't my first time having it, it's still is kind of amusing to eat something that isn't the usual beef, pork, chicken, or turkey. I got the sausage with and added mango chutney to it. The combination of that and the spicy mustard was very tasty. Topped with the .5L of Schöfferhofer made the whole meal on point. Have to make sure I'm not winding up in here on a daily basis... The only downside was that I could stand with it being bigger as the bun is much longer. I'm usually still a little hungry after eating one. I really wanted to like this place. I am German, so the menu sounded familiar. They had "Kölsch" beer, but served it in the wrong glass. When I asked the right one they refused even though they had it. Even worse, I ordered "Currywurst", among the top snacks in Germany. Easy to do. What I received was a dried out sausage, not the correct one (should be white). Did I mention it was dry, really dry? They served it with a minimal amount of "Currysauce " which is essentially ketchup and curry. However, it was placed in a tiny cup, too little for the sausage, and for dipping in when in fact it should be served over the sausage and in abundant amounts Overall a very disappointing experience. So easy to do it right, So difficult to do it wrong, and they did it wrong all along. Giving Germany a truly bad name. read more

Upon entering Der Schwarze Kolner later in the evening on a Saturday night, I was greeted by a santa-hat-wearing waitress who happily informed my group that they were currently running a special on a 24 oz heffeweizen for $3. It would be hard not to declare myself a fan when this is on offer. Fortunately, the rest of the experience was just as good. The place was not too packed and my large group was able to find a large enough area to congregate and chat. There are tons of delicious beers on tap that are poured into huge glasses. My friends and I would highly recommend the Aventenis. Pretty high alcohol content, tastes amazing, and here it's served in an enormous glass. Although its $8, it's probably one of the only drinks you'll need to get the night going. read more

Never have I ever had a more weirder experience at a bar than I did here. I remember liking this place the last time I was in NY but things sure have changed. Stopped here on a Thursday night close to midnight and immediately felt like I was being rushed out already even though there were still people at the bar. I ordered a drink from a person who said he was the manager and technically he's not working today but will help us anyways. Not even 5 minutes after getting my drink, the "manager" came back to our table with a rag and poured some of my beer onto his rag and said "oops, I spilled some of your beer" but said it in a way as if he was doing me a favor. I was seriously so confused and didn't know what to say or do because I never had anything close to this happen before. Another 5 minutes goes by and he came to tell us they're closing. This place has a pretty good beer selection, and not too terrible prices. However, the staff is rude / slow / apathetic. Also, the decor makes the place feel like a dingy steak n' shake. Plus the music is always really bad techno garbage that is wayyyyyy to loud to have a conversation with friends. Seriously, I don't go to a beer garden to dance, I go there to have a relaxed time with other people, so blasting techno is a huge reason this place has less stars than it's beer selection would normally merit. A German beer hall in Fort Green? Sounds good in theory, but in reality, Der Schwarze Koelner does not live up to the high expectations I had for it. Black and white checkered floors, red bar stools, long wooden tables with nowhere near enough seating and some of the worst acoustics I have ever experienced make this an incredibly uncomfortable place to sit and have a beer. You will be very cramped and forced to scream over the crowd to get your voice heard, so don't go here expecting to enjoy the company of your friends: you won't be able to. Additionally, the bar does not accept credit cards, and has no ATM on site, and there are no "Cash Only" signs to warn you of this, so be prepared! What is good about Der Scharze Koelner is the beer selection and the very knowledgeable staff. They have dozens of imported German beers at very reasonable prices, and if you are unsure what to order, tell your server what you like and they will match you up with a delicious beer. Basically, if you go early enough in the evening before it gets too crowded and bring cash and it is not hot outside, you'll have a good time--but in my opinion that is far too many rules to follow in order to have a beer. Um...it is advertised as a beer garden? What beer garden? Mmm...thats sketchy to begin with... but when you walk in, your eardrums are like totally shocked. I mean, there is not that many people, and people aren't screaming at the top of their lungs, but why the hell is it SOOO LOUD in here? What is wrong with the acoustics? Also, the checkered tile floors was just a bad business move. Probably pretty easy to clean, but I felt like I was in a diner or something. I think wooden floors would have been better and may also help to absorb the noise. The menu was also very limited. And the service? What service? We had to fetch our own menus and drinks. Boo hoo. There is also food, but there was no menu. Weird. I just saw some plastic plates being carried out, with a burger bun on it, and some mysterious meat inside, which I later found out was some sort of bratwurst. I used to be a huge fan of Der Schwarze Kolner. I spent NYE here two years ago, I had Thanksgiving dinner there and I went to their one year anniversary party. My guy and I would come here at least one night a week, sometimes even two. We would drink amazing German beer, snack on the amazing pretzels and sausages, chat with the owner, Dale, about all things beer, and sometimes bring in a piece of red velvet cake from next door. Der Schwarze Kolner used to be awesome and friendly. We stopped by a few months ago and were rudely told that Dale, had been fired. The good news is that the beer selection here is good, and reasonably priced. The bad news is that that's the only good thing about this place. My date's comment on the place seems spot on. It looks like a failed wine bar that just swapped out the tables and the taps. In certain ways, it's trying too hard, and in other ways, it's not trying hard enough. The waiters and waitresses wear absurd t-shirts with traditional beer garden suspenders printed on them, like a stupid tuxedo shirt. The tables are essentially cheap picnic tables with uncomfortable chairs, slightly set up to emulate the long benches and tables in Munich, but poorly done. The food is really unimpressive. The currywurst had only a slight resemblence to currywurst, only for people who have never had it before. The pretzel was worse than a pretzel you can get on a city street. The food was cheap, at least, but not very filling. The beer was good, though. It's got that going for it, but as far as beer gardens go, there are many better in the city. read more

I love this place. The giant 1L beer steins bring a smile to my face every time. I always get the dark beer and it is amazing. I don't which kind, the really knowledgeable and cool staff will recommend one for you and give you a taste so you are sure. I like the communal seating. Most times I go, I end up talking to really interesting people. It isn't like the beer garden in Queens. Even a little. It is small and noisy with a fun vibe. My least favorite thing about DSK is that I can never remember what the bar is called. I swear, each and every time I want to go there and need to look up directions, hours, or whatever, I have to Google "der german beer garden fort greene". But I chalk it up to my own fault for not being German. DSK is a casual mini-biergarden in Fort Greene. There are long benches, lots of windows overlooking the street, outdoor seating, foosball. Every time I'm here, I order almost everything on the food menu. Bratwurst and currywurst on soft warm delicious rolls, juicy sauerkraut, giant pretzel with Nutella, gherkin pickles, potato salad. All of it is amazing. They have an extensive beer menu, but I'm a lightweight so usually I just drink a Gaffel Kolsch, and a MezzoMix. (A german soda made with Coke and Fanta!) (Recently, though, i went with the gf, who ordered the kielbasa. Apparently, the skin was tough and inedible. This seemed like an anomaly, but I had to mention it. Even the most perfect places make mistakes.) I always leave stuffed and happy. read more

This place is wonderful. I rented it out on a Saturday from 11-1 for my sister's bridal shower. The interior is rustic and beautiful. They opened a half hour before so that i could set up, too. I dont live in BK anymore and was able to do logistics with Randi, the owner, via email and they were very kind and accommodating, and responded quickly. Food and service at the time of the event were wonderful as well. Its lovely that the owner and a lot of the staff are german, made us feel at home. Love that it's just plain ole rustic and not overly kitchy and 'german'. If i still lived in Bk, i would go here all the time, great vibes. read more

Everything about this place is amazing, except for it being in Brooklyn, but I'm a Queens guy, so there ya have it. Anyway, my friend reserved a table by the window for her birthday, and even though everyone was running a little late on a Saturday night, this wasn't a problem. The beer selection is pretty solid, and the prices absolutely can't be beat. The crown jewels though? The food. Holy hot damn you NEED to sample the currywurst. Incredible. And the pretzel with, are you ready? NUTELLA. If you make it through life without putting Nutella on a pretzel, I sincerely apologize for your loss. Food prices were great too, coming in at under $5 for a bratwurst or a pretzel. Everything was fresh as can be, with the bread roll and pretzel coming out piping hot. If I lived in that part of town, I'd most definitely be back. That said, Brooklyn is not for me so I probably won't unless it's for another special occasion. The Short: Your typical German imports. The Köstritzer on tap takes the cake though. Pretzels were average. Currywurst was solid though not in Berliner fashion. The Long: I went here one night because Habana Outpost was too crowded (I know it's not even close to being similar). Call me biased but I will most likely give any place that serves Köstritzer on tap an immediate 4 stars. When I worked in Erfurt, Germany Köstritzer was my go to beer so I was overjoyed to see it not only in a bar but on tap in a bar. While I was sitting there with my liter of deliciousness, I ordered a currywurst to go along with it. What I expected was a knackwurst cut into pieces with ketchup and curry powder on top served alongside some pommes. What I got was more like a brat served on a roll (which was awesome) with the curry ketchup on the side. For four bucks it wasn't all that bad and I would most certainly get another one. Lastly, I really did enjoy the open seating area and the huge open windows. It was definitely a plus. Love this place. read more

Die Stammkneipe was a travesty. When we arrived, it wasn't very crowded (yet) but the wait staff appeared overwhelmed. The first mishap was when my companion asked our server if the cider was sweet. She said no. WRONG. It was quite sweet. We also ordered chorizo with pickles. After about 40 minutes, and upon noticing those who arrived after we did were already eating, we inquired about our food. Then I spotted another server scoping out the other tables... grab a basket off an adjacent four-top, walk to the kitchen area, pivot, and walk back to us with "our order." We would have let it go except one of the Chorizo sticks had a bite taken out. A bite! A big bite! When we pointed it out to the server, she tried to convince us that it wasn't a bite. Ridiculous because it had teeth marks in it! They brought us another chorizo stick, but we were so skived and annoyed at that time, we immediately paid and left. Stay away. Stay far away! read more

I've been here a few times. Usually for a beer but also for food. Their bratwurst is delicious and so are their fries, served with ketchup and mayo. I've also had their flatbread, also delish. The atmosphere is beer-garden-ey with a aizeable outdoor seating area. I can't imagine coming solo, not sure I'd meet folks, but it's a good spot to meet a friend and hang with a group. I've never been to Der Schwarze Kölner at night, but it's definitely become my go-to spot for the World Cup (enough people to feel like you're in a crowded bar cheering on your team, minus the fire hazard/deathtrap environment of overstuffed Manhattan sports bars). Once the Cup ends, I'll certainly be returning. They have great food, great beer, friendly no-nonsense service & a welcome lack of the fussy, overwrought vibe that too many places in Park Slope/Fort Greene seem to have (not everything has to be branded as local, organic, hydroponic & "hand-crafted," ordered from menus designed by a guy who also whips up album covers for underground Swedish pop bands you're not cool enough to have heard of yet, you know?) If you're looking for a beer garden "experience," whatever that means, then you might be slightly disappointed, but I thought this place felt very authentic. It's German, rather than German-themed. Yes, it's simple in presentation (paper plates, etc) but it feels like plenty of places I've been in Germany & the fresh and delicious currywurst (a must-try) stood up to any of the amazing sausages I ate growing up in a German family. Plus the fact that the bartender (/owner?) asks "was willst du" instead of "what would you like" was a nice touch. Sometimes it's the little things! This place is huge inside. This is an important distinction in Brooklyn. Nice long tables which gives you the feeling of an authentic beer garden - difficult to accomplish in this 'hood. The pretzel was also huge, and yummy with mustard. The service was very attentive. My friends' food was "just okay/a little bland" they said, but the beer menu is extensive. The place has a cheesy, fun vibe with it's overly decorated interiors - even more so for Oktoberfest. I liked it, and will certainly keep it in mind for when I'm looking for a place to bring a big group of pals. read more

If I'm taking a risk and trying a new beer, I don't want to be stuck with an entire pint if I don't like it. So the smaller, cheaper pours are appreciated. I am not even a drinker but the vibe in this place won me over...warm and comfortable wiith a mixed crowd of old and young and people celebrating. My boyfriend and I came here after fleeing the horrible Cirkus Cirkor performance at the BAM. He was pleased to drown his sorrows in the varied German beers of this bar. He ordered 4 different beers, enjoyed them all, and was happy to note they had some unusual seasonal ones. I was happy with the sparkling cherry juice and the warm, and so fresh, brezels. He liked his bratwurst, even with the pale roll it came in. The potato salad was okay, not quite my idea of German potato salad, with too much bacon in it for a non meat eater. The food here is very reasonable. Food service is laid back but they get your beers quickly.I guess the waitresses know what the priority is here. All in all, a nice place to hang out with apparently a cool crowd of genuinely nice people. When I asked where a group got their whoopie pies from, a man in the group offered me one. People came in groups, some with birthday cakes. others with pastries. The ceiling is decorated with flags, and fake reindeer heads all painted or decorated differently. Lets start out with the positive for me - ridiculous huge beers (liter beers) for under $10 a liter sounds pretty good to me. Then the overwhelming negatives for me. First off, its hot as F here. No a/c, just windows....left me wishing for people to open the door and send a breeze my way. Sweating basically refilled my beer for me. Secondly - how hard is it to include a little taste description of each beer. Unfortunately, I am handicapped with the inability to a) speak german b) understand german beers. I had never had a single beer on the menu, and instead we resorted to listening to the server describe her favorite beers, which is great - but I'd like to not have to cause her to repeat the same thing 100 times a day. How about a little blurb like (savory with a bitter finish, or sweet with light crisp finish). Food - a really hot hot carnival like pretzel and mustard....i mean its good, its the cheapest thing to munch on....and i know you are keeping it german themed....but we're in america...gimme some foods i love to eat with my beer and it actually ENHANCES my beer. +1 for offering bratwursts though. Atmosphere - other than being really hot, the service is hit or miss. on one hand our server was great when she was available, on the other, all the other servers ignored us when we waved them over. Prices are good, but the bathroom wait can be brutal (beer = peeing right?) and the tables are really hard to get, and who stands at the bar here. The beer was delicious and the service was friendly and kept the beers flowing. The owner came over and we talked with him for a bit, and he was really friendly. The restaurant is located in a very vivid area. The restaurant doesn't appear as a typical German though. The menu isn't very resourceful and doesn't offer a lot of traditional German dishes. Furthermore, the dishes don't taste and look authentic. But at least the beer is real German and is definitely worth it and reasonable priced.
