This really is a fabulous zoo - a good range of animals and opportunities to get close to them. Though has been given to the needs of small children, with toughened glass viewing windows rather than the usual waist high fences - great for Mums who get tired lifting them up to see all the time. The lower part of the zoo itself is easily a full day's visit with the African Plains, up the hill in land gifted by the Irish President, another hour or so's walk, or you can get a safari bus trip round that part. A lot of work has been done bringing it up to 21st century standards and some of this is still ongoing so there is something new to see everytime. read more

Dublin zoo is located in the Phoenix park and although it is the only zoo we have in the country on an international standard it is terrible in my opinion, from visiting other zoos and safari parks. Not that I found the animals to be suffering at all, its just you need binoculars and to be 8ft tall to see some things! On one section there were giraffes and zebras in a field and they were so far down the other end they were like little dots and there was bamboo overgrowth so you couldn't see anything, no maintenance at all. I'm all for animals' having large enclosures but the layout of the zoo is pants. read more

Good place just lot of back places walked for 1 hour through the African plains but saw no animals just trees I don't know if the sign was in the wrong place or if the moved the section I don't know so I liked it just better signing would be better read more

Great zoo! Lots of interesting animals to see and they were very close so you can get good pictures.

The vending machines are broken. Put money in and you don't get your snack, money won't come back out. Pure robbery. Do not recommend. STAY AWAY FROM THE VENDING MACHINES!!! read more

Having not been to Dublin Zoo for many years we were pleasantly surprised during a recent family visit. The zoo is more modern then before with many of the areas looking like the original natural environment of the animals. We know at times some of the animals were a bit far away but if this means the animals are happier then so be it. All in all a great family day out and definitely worth a visit. read more

Very disappointed with the zoo. All I got from a visit was soar feet. Walk ways with high hedges on both sides with small openings to view the animals. Most of the time there was nothing to see as the animals were hidden behind hills or trees. The flamingo enclosure was very good as you could view these birds. A walk in the park would have been worth more. If you want to view wild animals, suggest you visit another zoo. read more

With the revalation that there are new births amongst the animal world now is the time to visit Dublin zoo. I wont tell you what has been born but they are really exciting its a must for any visitor. Its not just trudge from cage to cage, Dublin Zoo is not like that,there is the choo choo train which will take you around the zoo if your feeling lazy and if not its worth going round anyway, there are activities and fun things for the kids to do. Food is a joy the variety is sensational. the grounds are magnificent,if you wish take a picnic and enjoy the animals in their natural habitat. All in all its a brilliant day a must to be repeated. read more

Good trip for the day but a good bit of the zoo it out of commission because of construction at the moment

The Zoo was clean and tidy. The signs for animals and attractions were hit and miss some paths just ended. The meerkat restaurant was ok food was ok chips were cold, no lids or straws for the slush-puppy's! The animals looked amazing and you did get close to the big cats. read more

Dublin Zoo The Zoological Gardens occupy only a small part of Dublin's massive Phoenix Park but the Zoo itself is quite large. Dominated by a number of large duck ponds bordered by monkey and ape huts the flat paths and gentle incline provide a welcome relief for anyone more used to climbing hills at Belfast Zoo. Although you may feel that the €2 charge for a map is unwarranted and excessive you may find that it comes in handy after you've been walking around for a while and haven't a clue where you are. Upon entry to the zoo you can find a wide selection of heavily sedated animals hiding away from the public gaze in scenery that is, whilst beneficial to the animals, doesn't cater to the paying public, and if you're into looking at unkempt gardens then Dublin Zoo might be the place for you. Recently in the headlines following a penguin theft, Humboldts Penguins are on display at around the halfway point during your trip; distressed birds can be seen gathered around a glass door on the far left of the enclosure whilst wild seagulls and heron enjoy the fish intended for the penguins. The newly opened "African Plains" attraction offers yet another large duck pond and some overgrown enclosures in which even the most eagle-eyed visitor would struggle to see the animals. The actual "plains" element of this section is probably the best, with panoramic views over enclosures holding giraffes, antelope, ostriches and zebra. Located close by is the fairly decent rhinoceros pen, viewing from this location is at ground level and only the huge mounds of earth obstruct your view of these colossal beasts. Upon re-entering the main zoo you can view the elephant house, if you arrive at feeding time be prepared to see a lot of the animal's rear end and, if you're lucky, a lot of faeces. With screaming children having melted your brain into unusable pulp you will head towards the exits and notice the Zoo's best kept secret. The reptile house and aviary, both of which offer the best opportunity to see the animals up close, are located on your way out of the Zoo close to the Gift Shop which features a wide array of cheap tat. Overall if you know what to expect Dublin Zoo is right on the money but don't expect to find yourself immersed in a safari like adventure in the heart of Dublin. read more

Just came back from Dublin Zoo with our four kids and it was a great experience as usual. However, there was one unexpected element that I wanted to comment on. Usually, the otters are extremely shy and hard to see. But this time an otter befriended my daughter and proceeded to tap on the window and pretend to play a game with the kids; quite extraordinary and this went on for 10 minutes. Where has this exceptionally extroverted otter come from? The new indian lions are beautiful and the sumatran tiger male is even more striking. read more

A modern Zoo with an good varied selection of animals! Monkeys, tigers (you can get right up close to the tigers through a glass window, which is an interesting experience!). I'm no expert, but they looked like they were being well cared for - they didn't have huge amounts of space, but most of them had outside enclosures with lots of toys and trees to keep them occupied. Lots to see and do, and a friendly family atmosphere. There seemed to be a few picnic areas and a large gift shop selling ice-creams and souvenirs. Situated in the gorgeous Phoenix Park, it is easily accessible from one of the bus tours that go round the city - although we actually walked there from our city centre hotel in about 45 minutes. We had a slight wait in the queue of 5-10 minutes when we first arrived, but pleasantly surprised seen as it was July and there were lots of children there - the staff handled the queue quickly. We would definitely go back! read more

Gone are the days of the Zoos of old. There was a time when Dublin Zoo was well known for its ability to make infants cry with the mistreatment and inhumane housing of the animals (need I recollect that poor old bear gone crazy who spent his waking hours banging his head against the walls of his own tiny enclosure?). These days though, it's hard for even the most easily roused critique of zoo culture to throw stones at this modern and exemplary animal collection. The revamping of Dublin zoo has transformed it into one of the most forward looking examples of animal enclosure in Europe. The enclosures are astoundingly large, often immense, with ample space for the animals to disappear and do their own thing if they get weary of being gawked at. The new African plains section is composed of rolling fields and vast grassy paddocks where the animals visibly look more comfortable, less bothered and even healthy than I thought possible in such a place. A thorough cynic, I can't resist giving the Dublin Zoo experience a big thumbs up (but I'll deduct a star for its co-operation with a dispicable cage mentality...) read more

I think Dublin Zoo offers a fantastic day out for people of any ages. A group of us 20 somethings went as students (at a discounted rate for a big group i should add!) and we had a great time. They have all of the big guns of the animal world as well as some of the more unusual ones. The zoo is split into different sections, some containing all the birds, others with the big cats etc etc. There is a restaurant here which serves food of a moderate standard and the gift shop is packed with cuddly animals which the kids force their parents to take home as a souvenir of a great day out! read more

the dublin zoo is a great family day out. there a nice resturant where you can have a family meal. there are wheelchair ramps, theres a play area for kids, and picnic tables, all you need is a bit of good weather. if your driving, you will have to park and walk to the zoo, as parting beside the zoo isnt great. the tickets are a bit pricey, but a good day for all read more

Dublin Zoo is conveniently situated in the famous Phoenix Park, official home of the President of Ireland. The zoo is massive and takes a good four hours to walk around. Each wild animal enjoys most spacious accomodation with great viewing panels in every cage and enclosure. Visitors can get right next to the tigers and this seems to thrill the children and adults alike! If you enjoy photographing wild life, this is the place, which seems much larger than London Zoo. The best time to to is in the morning and an early start is advisable due to the large amount of walking that is involved. Dublin Zoo is well served by public transport, it can be reached on foot within ten minutes from the nearby Luas tram stop , or a taxi from the city centre is quite reasonably priced. After your visit to Dublin Zoo, you will find Phoenix Park is rich in history and is a great spot for a family picnic. read more

visited the zoo with kids in tow a few weeks ago, seemed to arrive as the crowd reached it's longest, a zoo employee then opened up the members gate for people to get in and that was great. weather was fine and we enjoyed the day i would however have liked to see the petting zoo opened. overall a fun day out. read more
