Apple Nut Bread, Raisin Bread, Potato Bread...My favorite Jalapeno Bread...Yummieee!. They have cookies, pies, fruit bars and will even ship your purchase to that lucky someone. I love this little store. While I sat outside eating my bread and drinking my mimosa it sort of reminded me of an old western. Especially when I saw the cute guy from the back walk up saying "can I help you?" Reminded me of Little Ben from Bonanza. OMG!!!! How many drinks did I have!!!! Well, howdy there, friend! It's Captain 619 here, and I'm 'bout to spin ya a yarn 'bout my visit to Dudley's Bakery out yonder at 30218 Hwy 78 in Santa Ysabel. Now, if ya head northeast from El Cajon, you'll find it's a good 38-minute jaunt, and I tell ya what, it's a mighty fine stop on your way to Julian. When we strolled into Dudley's, our bellies were rumblin' like thunder. We ordered ourselves a BLT with avocado and a triple grilled cheese, and let me tell ya, those sandwiches hit the spot like a cool breeze on a hot summer day. Each bite was packed with flavor, and you could tell these folks know their way 'round the kitchen. Now, I gotta give ya a heads-up--this here bakery ain't for the light of wallet. Prices are a bit steep, but that's par for the course in a tourist spot like this. They got a whole spread of pastries and scrumptious treats that'll make your mouth water. Lots of bread and pies galore--it's a real country feast for the senses. But here's the kicker: if you're rollin' in on horseback, you might wanna think twice. There ain't no place to tie up your trusty steed, so keep that in mind before you pull up. So, if you find yourself wanderin' through the area and your stomach's callin', you best stop by Dudley's Bakery. Started our day trip to Julian with a stop at Dudley's to fuel ourselves with pastries and coffee. Dudley's boasts an impressive collection of baked goods, coffee, and other goodies such as jams to take back as a souvenir. After careful deliberation, we chose the raspberry danish, pumpkin turnover, chocolate muffin, spinach and feta croissant, and chocolate croissant. Our beverages of choice included their seasonal toffee nut iced lattes and a pumpkin spice latte. Overall, we enjoyed the pastries. The danish, although delicious, had too little filling in proportion to the dough. The spinach feta croissant was a nice contrast to the other sweet goods, but it would've tasted better had it been heated up. The chocolate croissant was average, with the chocolate filling nestled within only half the croissant instead of well-distributed throughout. Our favorite was definitely the decadent moist chocolate muffin. As for the coffees, the toffee nut iced lattes were incredible in terms of flavor, ratio of espresso to milk, and overall taste. However, the pumpkin spiced iced latte was cloyingly sweet and we would recommend asking for either less syrup or an extra shot of espresso. Dudley's was a lovely place to commence our day trip, and it offers plentiful seating and kind employees. read more

Went to Dudley's last month! Beautiful ride through southern CA, and we got DELICIOUS sandwiches made on their fresh-baked breads. I got a sandwich on the Rosemary Olive Oil bread and it kicked a$$! My girlfriend got one on the Sourdough and that was also delicious. I definitely recommend visiting this place, it has been around for decades, and has always held to its committment to provide fresh-baked breads with high quality and great taste. Regarding the lack of selection sometimes, that seems like a given for any place that bakes fresh on a daily basis. Every true bakery I have ever gone to runs into this issue. If you want to always guarantee your selection, go to Vons, and wolf down a loaf of preservative-filled garbage. read more

Came here on my way up to Julian with my family, was greeted by a huge holiday line that went by surprisingly fast. The workers were very helpful and helped me pick out the best breads for our needs back home. We got San Diego sourdough, jalapeño cheddar, and cinnamon raisin. Me and wife enjoyed all three of them and so did the little ones which was surprising cause they're normally really picky! Didn't get a chance to try to sandwiches cause we were in a rush , but heard from friends that they're really good, and i'll be sure to try them next time I come back for more loafs. We visit Julian every year around Halloween and we are prepared for the long lines and frustrated staff everywhere we go. This is the first time we decided to have lunch at Dudley's Bakery because they have big parking lot and lots of (clean!) restrooms. To our surprise the staff was very friendly, efficient and professional even with demanding and mean customers. I was really impressed with the friendliness by owners and how they handled complaints by some unreasonable customers. We waited about 20 minutes for sandwiches which was nothing compared to any other restaurant in the area. They also have lots of kids toys, rocks and beautifully curated gifts. read more

Wasn't going to post a review, but then I read the "owner"(?) response to another poster who found vermin in her bread. It just confirmed my experience. RUDE RUDE RUDE people work there. Did not find ONE person with a smile, let alone a helpful attitude. My mom and I thought maybe they are underpaid, but NOW I see it comes from the top! Don't waste your time here. The sandwiches are not good enough to look past the bad service and inflated prices. And I mean BAD SERVICE! Just drive a bit farther either to Ramona or Wynola or even Julian depending on which direction you are headed. You will almost certainly find better service and better food. read more

Upon sending an email with a concern about a sandwich purchased, I was very pleased to receive an immediate personal response from Lydia at Dudley's. She assured me that she would investigate my complaint and review it with her kitchen staff, as well as offering me a refund and inviting me to come back for a free sandwich. She apologized as well for their failure to answer the phone over the weekend, as they had been so busy that they had to close early on Sunday. I have been stopping in here for a long as I can remember and have nothing but good things to say. Highly recommend a visit if you are in the neighborhood. Easily the best macaroons I have ever had and the apple nut bread and almond swirl are superb. Great place! My family took a day trip to Dudley's and Julian town. My husband and I shared a roast beef sandwich that was excellent! I Recommend taking a box of assortment cookies home. I would drive back just for the chocolate coconut macaroon and shortbread cookie with raspberry. We went to Julian to shop, and decided to pick up a cold gallon of apple cider on our way home. Beautiful drive to Santa Isabel for lunch and baked goods. Variety of tasty bread loaves buy 4 get one free is the standing special. 7.50 average price. Great selection of Danish, turnovers, cookies, etc. Average price 4.50. We shared a club sandwich, which was huge packed with top-quality meat. Coffee here is delicious or try a choice of specialty coffees. Clean bathrooms and plenty of parking. Dudleys is one of my favorite fall spots. read more

I've been stopping at Dudley's bakery to get Dudley's bars for my parents. I personally love their croissants but lately, I got hooked on their new Hawaiian bread and strawberry chocolate jam. I have been coming here since the 1970's. This place is amazing. The food is always great and reasonable prices. If you need a place to eat come here. Prices are by far extremely reasonable compared to the Farmhouse 78 just 2 doors down. The staff is friendly and treat you with respect. Delicious bread and pastries! Plan to stop early or the selection will be minimal on pastries. Bread is usually well stocked, even later in the day. If you can tolerate jalapeños, the cheddar and jalapeño bread is delicious! A selection of sandwiches is available. Awesome getaway up in the mountains. Got a pastry and a regular coffee and both were top quality and a great price. Seems like it gets to be a BUSY place. I got there earlier and by the time I was leaving it was busy. Big inside and solid outside areas with a good amount of seating. Great views from the patio and driving up. Everyone in the bakery seemed to be cheerful and have a good attitude. Most of all the employees, always respectful and on point. The food never disappoints. Cute little place to stop off for a sandwich, cookie, and lemonade. I love sitting outside and looking across the open fields with the trees and cows in the open fields. They also have cool local goods and artistry items for sale inside to browse. I will say - the bathrooms need an upgrade in a major way. Come'on man. read more
