Winnipeg has two major taxi companies: Unicity Taxi and Duffy's Taxi. When I needed to take a taxi between my home and the airport back in the day, I used the former. For my first job in Winnipeg, if I had an early shift before Winnipeg Transit started its bus service, I'd get a taxi chit from Duffy's Taxi and get to work that way. Winnipeg Transit buses start running at 6 am. I had the occasional shift at 5:30 am, 6 am, and 6:30 am. All three start times qualified for getting a taxi chit from any manager at my former place of employment to get me to work. It was straightforward using the taxi chit. I'd call Duffy's to get a taxi to come to fetch me. Taxi drivers were pretty accurate getting to my apartment building. I rarely had any issues. They also knew where to drop me off without scratching their heads because I worked at a building at the corner of Portage and Main. I'd give them my chit and was good. It's funny how I never called this taxi company to get me to and from the airport. Perhaps I felt like sharing the wealth between the two cab companies. To date, I still prefer taking a taxi to the airport than going with a ride-sharing service. It's more habit than installing another app. I'd rather call and speak to a dispatcher to have a taxi come get me. I'm not surprised about the low ratings here when it comes to waiting for a taxi during peak hours. My experiences have been during non-peak hours when folks are sleeping and I'm the oddball going into work before the sun rises. I have no issues with Duffy's Taxi. I'm glad that it's still around. I am a senior female with mobility issues who depends on cabs to get around. Recently on 3 occasions, I phoned Duffy's Taxi for a cab. The first time I waited 45 minutes before phoning back to see how much longer I would have to wait. The dispatcher told me that after 10 minutes my request was removed. "Why", I asked. "Because that is what we do", I was told. This is not an explanation nor is it logical. The second time I waited 30 minutes - again, I phoned and asked where my cab was and again I was told that my request had been removed. This policy is ludicrous and frustrating to say the least. How much business is Duffy's losing by doing this? Yesterday, I phoned for a cab and I specifically asked for a car because I have mobility issues and have trouble getting into and out of SUV's and Vans. What should show up 20 minutes later? A van. So either the Dispatcher did not relay that message or the cab driver did not read it. Either way, this is BAD Customer Service. This Driver (Cab No. 481) is ignorant, rude, refuses to shut up and kept talking over me, would not listen to me and worst of all does not keep his hands to himself. He kept trying to shove me into the backseat when I have to move slowly and in a certain way so I do not hurt myself. I have bruises on my arm from where he grabbed me and shoved me into the backseat. This behaviour is unacceptable on so many levels. Unwanted touching is considered simple battery which is illegal. He should have let me get in on my own, in my own time. Then he put my bags in haphazardly and when he took a turn to sharply, one bag which had a glass bottle fell between the seat and the door. Thankfully when he opened the door to get the bags for me, he was able to not break the bottle. Otherwise he or Duffy's would be buying me a new bottle. Cab 355 kicked out my daughter and 1 yr old grandson out of the cab when there was a power outage Jan 18th at around 1am. Because she had $14 on her bank card and I was to pay the rest when she got to my place. He wouldn't take her. Now how is this safety for indigenous women?? "Waiting for the taxi driver to call the dispatch". 20 Minutes later, I was told that I was "Next on queue". 30 Minutes later, Still Nothing! What kind of Taxi business is this? I am going to write a review that not only covers Duffy's but also Unicity. At the company I work for I have used either cab company to take me to work, and at the end of the day take me home again. And in the early day's almost 17 years ago I used them also for the same purpose. I make good money at the company I work for to have no problem paying for cab's over taking a city bus, because that's a hassle for other reasons. I prefer a private ride to work and back which I have no problem paying for. Once and a while before covid and former premier's Palister's mandate to increase cab capacity you would get the odd cab operator who wanted to negotiate a cab fare so they could turn off the meter and hopefully would be bumped back into the que to get another fare soon. Now after the whole covid experience I find better than 90 percent of cab operator's want to make a deal, and you have to negotiate your fare. Now for me being experienced with this, I try to negotiate a fare to get to work and back where I can save a buck or maybe two... I mean I get it.. some driver's on slow no provincial cheque day's make less than 10 dollar's an hour.. and when those cheques are out then they can clean up. Now is my main gripe... Is that once and a while you will be picked up by a cab driver that has never picked me up before and demands money up front before he moves the cab.... I will preface this by saying my father was a white frenchman, and my mother was of white french and native mixture... and I gained the more native color of the mix... And maybe 5 times now I entered a cab where the cab driver demanded money from me up front before he moved the cab. Which I find incredibly offensive. This cab driver looked at me, judged me by the color of my skin, maybe the way I was dressed and just simply profiled me in and incredibly racist way to demand cash up front... Treat me like a thief... once I entered your cab... I guess almost 17 years of flawless trips with duffy's cab call's to my company with no problems of ever getting payed for the service you provide our company and the f*cking tips I always give is not enough to be treated with some respect or dignity... I always pay my cab bill's... and I know tons of regular cab driver's who know that I'm a good customer. Those cab driver's have incredibly good conversations with me and even tell me about what their family member's are doing and I feel such warmth to have those conversations because I remember their family they talk about as if I know them. Pete of cab 192 would go on about his daughter and her upcoming marriage back in india... Pete was the most stand up driver for Unicity. I mean I felt like I knew her and her husband the way he would talk about her... I am sorry he retired but I understand the reasons why he had to. Now back to my main gripe because I lost track of where I was... Cab 478, and cab 402... are no longer allowed to pick anyone up from the business where I work for because taking a single look at me and judging me a thief because of my heritage... If I were white looking I'm shure that would not have been an issue. Our company will not put up with racism and that include's outside vendor's that serve us including cab services. We do not put up with racial profiling. I will also get back to the topic I touched upon about cab driver's making deals to get back into the que.... A lot of new people who call a cab and never used one before might and and by might I mean have to deal with a cab driver who want's to negotiate a flat fare and turn off the meter. And those new cab user's might think they are getting a deal on a ride... most times your not... Remember this.. when a cab driver negotiates a flat fare and turns off the meter, that's cash in their pocket that never get's reported to the cab company so they don't have to pay their fair share to them or even declare it on their tax forms.. it's all free undeclared income they steal from all revenue sources... I have found better than 80% of owner operaters always leave the meter running and they are most trustworthy, but their later non cab owning drivers want to screw the system... so who's the real thiefs??? and what's the main excuse??? "the client only wanted to go a few blocks"?? BS.... When your not shure of your cab driver's honesty and they really push a cash only deal which your not shure because it can cost you more than the fare should... just tell them "Leave the meter running, I will pay whats on the meter." read more

My wife was out this morning running errands for our children to go to school and was left behind by the taxi driver who was prepaid. This has not been the first time occurrence. The excuse given was she was rude. Knowing my wife very well she would nor be rude unless treated so. Duffys drivers are womanizing creaps that are nothing but beggars and crooks. read more

I signed up for Yelp specifically to write this review. This company is hands the down the WORST cab service of any city I've ever been in. I have taken this cab many times and each time was a terrible experience. I called over 2 hours ago and there is still no cab on the way to get me. I missed a very important appointment that I can no longer rebook. The wait times are absolutely ridiculous and unpredictable and the dispatchers often hang up on you. You're better off downloading tapcar or some other cab company. None of the taxi companies are reliable in Winnipeg but I can say for certain that duffys is the worst for service. 90% of the time service is great. The app? It puts you a block or so away from your actual location. Better off calling for exact pick up location. Dispatch? 90% great. But when they're rude? VERY RUDE!! To the point I may go elsewhere. Please fix that Duffy!!! read more

called after 45 minutes I call again they say they are sending out another taxi to get me said it will be a 6 minute wait 25 minutes later one pulls up I get in the car and he says for a 12 minute ride it's going to run you about 50$ he said so pay now and we can get going I say I'm not paying 50$ I've taken this rout many times with a taxi and it's about 25$ he says no you pay now or we won't move I said great got out of the cab and called unicity they got there in 5 minutes and it was 27$ ride even with a long ass red light. wake up and get some new drivers. read more

Thieved money from my 86-year old grandmother. Driver locked the cab doors with her inside and insisted that she pay money up front before her cab ride. When dealing with the office staff they were unhelpful, unwilling to listen to the situation and rude. Driver of unit 193 drove poorly. They strattled lanes, cut off other drivers and made me feel unsafe.

I do not recommend using this service. Every person I've interacted with on the phone was a negative experience. No class, no manners, and especially no customer service! They hang up before your done. Missed the time by twenty min. Almost missed my flight. Called back and was told it was because of bad weather when it's sunny outside. I had to use Duffy's cab for two times. My experience was very good. Both days the drivers knew just were I wanted to go and got me there very smoothly. They were polite. I do not understand why other customers are treated so badly unless they are expecting to much themselves from the cab drivers!!! Maybe I will get a lemon driver one day! My 90 year old mother-in-law called a taxi to pick her up at 4:20 p.m. yesterday Nov. 29th, 2019. A half hour later she had someone call again as the taxi hadn't come. Twenty minutes later another call was made and still no taxi. I don't care how buy you are. If you can't make it call back and tell the person. Don't leave them waiting. How arrogant, rude and disrespectful Duffy's is. I never used to support the private unlicensed companies like Uber and Lyft but now I see why they're necessary. read more

Duffy's taxi took 58 minutes to come today, yet the operator had indicated that it would take 15 minutes. I had allowed for up to 40 minutes actually. The person at customer service after had indicated that they were busy this morning because of people receiving their cheques at the end of the month. I understand that. But, they should have staffed themselves appropriately to meet that demand. If they are going to take literally an hour, and they are aware of the circumstances, then they should indicate that. She also said that there are different priorities and I should have indicated that. Unfortunately, they had never asked what the priority was. When there options available, it is best to present them. When I order a cab, I just order one, I'm unaware of other options unless I'm informed of them. If you need to go summer important, never trust Duffy's Taxi. They are generally about 20 minutes later than indicated. I find that Unicity is quite consistent with a +/- 10 minutes. Spring Taxi can be great and generally are on time. At the very least, don't trust the times they provide. They have no management to speak to beyond the operators, nor escalation methods internally for complaints. read more

Three times in a week I had a Duffy cab driver get mad at me for paying with card and not with cash. One even asked me why cant I pay with cash. Told him I have to expense it to my company card and he went silent and wouldn't say anything as he begrudgingly got out his card machine. I said bye and no response, he was that annoyed. Seriously Duffy, get credible non shady drivers please. Advice if you have to use them: tell dispatch you intend on paying with card if you are. How rude!!!!!! Is all I can say!!!! My 73 year old mother called Duffys to pick her up after she went for groceries. She called me and said she's been waiting an hour. My husband and I were both out with our kids in separate vehicles and couldn't pick her up. I called Duffy's to say that she's called twice and has been waiting an hour. I started by saying she called twice and hasn't been picked up yet...he replied "well that doesn't tell me anything". I said she's at Walmart St vital. I have been using Duffy's for a couple of years with only a few complaints using the app to book. when I really needed them they let me down, the cab assigned to me phones to tell me he could not pick me up and to call to get another. I called twice while a waited outside, granted it was a nice day but I needed to get across town as fast as possible. I phoned to cancel after seeing 3 Duffys go by my residence. Duffys did show up as the Unicity cab drove up. I have some health issues and take a fair number of cabs. Duffys did not feel the need to call and apologize so my business is going elsewhere. read more

Just took a trip in car 2179 from Emerson to Mowatt road then to Henderson highway! My wife was straight forward about the addresses (2 locations) right when we got in the car - total was approx 24 bucks! Handed driver 40 and asked for 10 return giving him $6+ Tip only for driver to say that we are out of city limits so it is double! But the 40 will be ok! My wife said no that is dishonest and we want 10 change and that he was still getting a tip! He continued to argue with my wife at which time I advised him to keep the money as it wasn't worth arguing with him in my driveway! Nothing of this nature was mentioned to us when we gave the destination addresses as per double charge outside of the city! Total scam - driver totally dishonest! Service is terrible, they are very rude on the phone either booking or when I lost something I could never get someone in lost and found to answer. I know there are very few options in Winnipeg but Duffys is by far the worst. read more

The taxi I took to the hospital was horrible. He was on the cell phone whole time and it was so hot I had to roll down the window in fall. Radio was full blast and strong perfume fill the car made me sick. The other taxi back was horrible. He was on the cell phone again. Surprised I am not dead. read more
