The food is good, on the whole. It might seem 'common' of me to be discussing the quality of bakery food on a forum where most reviews are of Customs St restaurants; but a junk-food aficionado appreciates that simple items like pies or even cream buns can vary hugely in quality. Their pies are not the best I've had, the pastry isn't flaky and delicate as you'd ideally want, and the filling can be a bit 'gelatinous'. But I very much enjoy their pepper-steak pie, and also their seafood pie -- the latter especially is an item that can turn out very good or very bad, depending on the establishment. The one at Baker's Dozen is very flavoursome, the filling is of a similar consistency to say a steak and cheese pie rather than the mushy, almost styrofoamy filling I've experienced on occasion [and I've done my research :)]. They also do a fantastic ham and mayo square type thing, it's got a signature flavour to it that I can't quite place, a hint of sweetness... yum. I'm also a stickler for their coffee cream donuts, delightful. I must say I've had awful service there in the past from the owner, and I can't omit a mention of it because it left me with a very unpleasant feeling. Lately though whenever I've visited Baker's Dozen I've been served by people other than him, and they're all friendly enough if not effervescing with joy at my custom -- though perhaps that's because they know as soon as I walk in the door that they're about to sell out of coffee cream donuts :D

We ordered a cake for my daughter's 5th birthday the same day. Ordered at 8am, was supposed to be ready at 5pm. When I arrived they admitted they had completely forgotten about it! They charged half price and delivered to our house which was appreciated given the circumstances. Not ideal as we weren't able to enjoy the awesome look of cake for that long before doing the candles, cutting and getting to bed. The cake itself was awesome with chocolate ganache and piled high with berries on the top. Would go again as long as forgetting orders isn't a regular thing.

The Boston Bakery (for which I have no idea why it is named after a city in the States!), is quite unassuming and from the outside isn't very distinguishable from any other old school bakery. Except that first of all the family that run it are the loveliest people and if you're lucky their little super adorable daughter will run the EFTPOS machine for your purchase. They also cherish their regulars; for example my partner used to be a regular and then moved overseas for 3 years and they still remembered her after all that time! And then there's the pies, oh sweet sweet delicious heaven-sent morsels of delight! They have the standard fare which drive a hard bargain at $3.60, but then they also have 'fancy' pies for $4.20 which include rockstar gems like Steak, Mushroom, Bacon and Cheese, or Chicken, Camembert and Cranberry, or Steak and Kumara, or Butter Chicken and Broccoli. My personal favs are the first 2 aforementioned pies and I really have to discipline myself as I have to walk past the Boston Bakery twice a day, 5 days a week. If you are in Mt Albert and need to fill the gap, swoop up one of these hand-made with love treats.

I always make a beeline for their finger buns every time I visit Golden Bakery. Soft yeast buns smothered with a thick coating of a pink or white icing sugar glaze and topped off with dessicated coconut, it sure does its job of satisfying my sweet tooth. Their cream donuts are good too but then again, when are cream donuts ever not good? The contents in the pie warmer cabinet contain your classic sausage rolls, mini savouries, and mince pies. At less than $4 for each item, it's well priced (though I've never had the chance to sample their pie range because I always get distracted by the finger buns). A loaf of freshly baked sliced white or wholemeal bread will set you back a mere $2, but they're nothing to scream home about, so stick with your supermarket varieties, I say. The usual hot drinks, and fish and chips (say what) are also served here. An alternative to the $5 meal deals offered by the fast food chains, Golden Bakery offers a combo of a sandwich, donut and Coke for $5. The $4.80 combo gets you a large coffee and a donut or danish. Cheap, on-the-go meal fixes for when you've got a real hankering for bakery treats. Golden Bakery is a little awkwardly placed, adjacent to a liquor store and a scungy river, and with an internet cafe on the level above, but on the plus side, there's plenty of parking. Family-owned and operated, you'd be hard pressed to find anything really unique about Golden Bakery but if you do happen to stop by, I leave you with two words, and two words only: finger buns.

They sold a large box filled with either rice or noodles (or fried rice for additional $1) and three different meat dishes of your choice for $13. This was such a great deal. I'm glad I had someone to share it with because the portion was huge! Tip: walk around the entire night market (it's not too big) before you buy anything. There are a couple stalls that sell the exact same thing but the portions/pricing are slightly different. I would definitely come back and would recommend it to anyone in Auckland on Sundays :)

Apart from the food, the night markets have stalls with clothing, phone accessories and bling bling. My favourite purchase to date is chunky beads that were hugely discounted. The night market is a must visit, for a bit of flavour and selection. Don't forget to try the pineapple with the ice-cream!

OK, my rating doesn't really reflect what general public think of this place…read more I admit. This is personal. I live in Tokyo, but from Boston MA USA - birth place of Dunkin Donuts. After several year of D&D drought land called Japan, when I saw this place.... This place was glowing. I stood in front of it like Harold & Kumar finally found White Castle in Cherry Hill, NJ. Long coffee, short coffee, whatever the coffee term so foreign to Yankees.. And there it was.. "Dunkin Original" And that taste, just like back home. That cheap, watered down taste... Which was magically orgasmic to me. I let my girlfriend had a sip. She immediately said "wow, it's gross". I don't give a F. That's the taste I grew up with. Thank you, Auckland D&D.
