Yes it's decent.. in a very mediocre way. I'd give this place 2.5 stars if compared to a similar motel in an urban area, but that wouldn't be a fair comparison. Parking is plentiful. As in I didn't see any other cars at all in the lot. (where is Lac du Bonnet again?) The inside is really dated (1980s). The lobby reminded me of someone's living room. The place is run by a Korean family. Somewhat friendly but there's a little bit of a language barrier. The rooms do feel a bit on the ghetto side. There are drill holes in the wall, there's no bathroom fan (there's a switch in the bathroom that doesn't seem to do anything), and the carpets are a bit grungy. However, the bathroom is clean. There was also a microwave in my room. The best part of the hotel? The pool and hot tub. We had the whole place to ourselves. Great place to chat and drink beer (though glass containers aren't allowed in the area, shhhh..) However.. the hot tub water has an oil sheen. Yes, a visible slick. I had to try REALLY hard not to think about it. Do NOT drink the water by accident. The pool water looked okay though. Lastly, the hotel restaurant (Laura's) serves pretty decent diner/comfort food. I've had the breakfast a couple of times, and the prices are reasonable. This place is no Hilton, it does do the job.. somewhat.

The first room had a horrible mould smell, and green fur growing on the shelf in the fridge. I set my things down, and went to hot tub (the reason I picked this hotel in Lac du Bonnet). It was cooler than I would set my own tub, and the jets so weak that it didn't even circulate the water. I stayed only 5 minutes, when I can normally soak forever. Going back to front desk, the door to get out the front closed at 9:30pm. So I went back to room, and called the front desk. The lady came to check it out, and looked at the water leak and mould in room, so she tried to communicate, but after several attempts, she left. In 5 minutes the man that checked me in came with a new key to move me to a noisy room right next to manager suite with their young boys. At least there was no foul odour, so I settled in. They say there is WiFi, but no password is provided. The sink leaks, the tub doesn't plug. The carpets need stretching, bed sheets are clean but very wrinkled. I think this is the first room I've been in with no coffee pots..... The beds are hard. I came by myself, just to sleep before an early morning shift. Very plain linens, mid 90's decor.. I am by myself this time, but work per diem nursing all over middle province. Definitely won't waste my money again. The only good thing was front desk staff were pleasant despite languages, the pool area was great, even if water was too cold. Room was warm which helped with taking off bitter chill.

The Restaurant has good food and it is pleasing to the palate. It is easy to exit from the highway and back on again with a small hotel for travelers that pass through on their way east or west.

Last year, we booked a room at this inn and arrived only to be told they had accidentally double-booked our room. We were offered ZERO compensation and, because it was rodeo weekend, the nearest accommodation we could find was in Steinbach. It was incredibly frustrating and left a very bad taste in our mouths. Against our better judgment, we booked here again this year. Knowing what happened last time, I actually called before starting to travel to confirm our stay AND specifically to confirm that our room was booked and that we would not arrive to another double-booking situation. We drove all the way from Gimli tonight, arrived to check in and -- unbelievably -- THEY DOUBLE-BOOKED OUR ROOM AGAIN. Now, after attending our event tonight, we have no room to return to and have to drive all the way back to Gimli. Once could be an unfortunate mistake. Twice -- after I specifically called ahead because of what happened the first time -- is completely unacceptable. I genuinely do not understand how an inn can operate this way. Your most basic responsibility is to manage your room reservations, and somehow ours has been mishandled two years in a row. We planned our evening around having accommodation, drove a significant distance, and did everything we possibly could to make sure this wouldn't happen again. It still did. To say we are angry and disappointed is an understatement. I would have absolutely no confidence booking a room here again.

The lounge was recently renovated and is very nice - the nicest in the area and a few large screens if sports is your thing. Jeff behind the bar is awesome! Only reason it gets 4 stars instead of 5 is that most of the guys that work there are Boston Bruins fans. Heh.

The wings come in some 10 flavours, and certain flavours (I think 7) can be had in boneless variety. I'm not sure why that limit exists though, as the wings all seem the same, minus the sauce poured on top. The wings I must say are pretty awful. Not so much the soggy batter, but they put WAY too much salt over these things. I could feel my blood pressure rising. And yes, the taste is not great at all. Normally I can scarf these things down, but I actually had trouble going past 20 with these ones. My stomach was turning. My colleagues had the burger and spaghetti. Both dishes looked and smelled decent, so I would recommend trying something other than those wings.

Those who are observant will also notice that the other side of the parking lot was the location of the first air mail flight in Manitoba (1927). Look for the stone mini-monument. The inside looks like most other small-town pubs, with the dated wood paneling. The bar itself is on a raised area at the back. There is a dance floor as well, but it seemed like nobody used it. There is an actual mini-liquor store in the very back, around the back of the bar counter. Good to know as the local MLCC (government liquor store) closes early most days. The other thing to mention is that this hotel also has a Chinese restaurant, accessed through a side door next to the bar counter. See my review of Lake View Restaurant. On Fridays and Saturdays, there is a steak night. Seriously, you have to hit this up. I had the 16oz T-bone. This dish comes with onion rings and coleslaw by default. You can pick between wedges and fries (I chose wedges). The steak is one of the better ones in recent memory. No gristle or tendons, and a very decent cut. Served with sauteed mushrooms on top. The bun was meh, and the onion rings and potato wedges were also nothing special. I enjoyed the coleslaw though. Really liked how they didn't drown the thing in dressing. 4 stars for the steak, and 3.5 stars after factoring in the sides.

You'll want to close all of these when you arrive, but it means there are a few bugs in the room. Unfortunately, that takes away from an otherwise fine stop for the night. If you have trouble finding the woman to check in with, people are known to open a door to an empty room and leave a night's worth of money when they go. It's not like the city no one's going to take what's not theirs. A fine country alternative to heading as far west as Winnipeg.
