Just Go (#42) We…read moredrove through Wisconsin from Chicago to Minnesota, making a few stops along the way. One of the things we like to do is stop and take a photo of the Welcome sign... this one took us on a little loop where we can stop safely and not on the side of the freeway. One of the most photographed and visited signs is this one just past the border with Illinois along I-94 right before hitting Pleasant Prairie/Kenosha. As we entered from Rockford just at the Beloit Travel Center there it is... the "Welcome to Wisconsin" sign. It is worth mentioning because they are pretty and not just a metal road sign. It is a wooden welcome sign in the shape of the state. We stopped at the first food place we saw... Culver's in Pleasant Prairie and ordered their Butterburger with a side of Cheese Curds. First time having both... we don't have a Culver's in California. We enjoyed their yummy burger and we liked the Cheese Curds too! When I think of Wisconsin I think of cheese and I think of this parody song by Eurythmics: "Sweet dreams are made of cheese Who am I to dis a Brie... " We drove to Downtown Milwaukee and across the impressive building of the Pabst Theater, along the Milwaukee River there he stood the larger-than-life -- Bronze Fonz... ahhh! These Days Are Ours... Happy Days. Who remembers? Finally, before leaving Wisconsin we made a "shortstop" (okay, bad pun) at the American Family Field at the Brewers Team Store. At the time of our visit the team was in Miami playing the Marlins in Game 2 of their three-game series so we were able to walk inside without the masses. In front were a couple of their MVP's, Hank Aaron and Robin "The Kid" Yount, and also Bob Uecker, Brewers icon & Baseball Hall of Famer... I spent time in Wisconsin for work, working at the Oshkosh Air Show in Oshkosh for a week! I'm a…read morehuge cheese fan so of course, I loved Wisconsin! Thank goodness work was in a giant tent (among numerous giant tents) with our booth having a free standing air conditioning unit because it was hot the summer we worked the Air Show! The air show is typically held the last week in July and is attended by over 600,000 people! Yeah, it's a huge event! Famous folks attend the air show including John Travolta, Harrison Ford, Morgan Freeman, Gene Hackman, and numerous astronauts. Everyone I encountered was really nice in Wisconsin! It was fun to see the Green Bay Packard merchandise and the Cheesehead merchandise in the convenience stores! And the Wisconsin topography was peaceful and lovely! The staff is friendly, the materials are very accessible and the equipment is easy to use. The building itself is gorgeous, with vaulted, stained glass ceilings and long, old fashioned wooden desks each with small green lamps. Here's how our visit played out... Growing up as a kid, it was always fun to hear my parents' stories from their childhood in La Crosse, WI. My dad has a couple that he really enjoys recounting: one story is about an epic high school football matchup between his school and my mom's (my dad's team won, which may explain his fondness for the story), and a second story is about a lone gunman who robbed a hotel where my dad worked, my dad subsequently chased into a parking lot, and he got shot at in the chase. You can tell that both of these items of family folklore may be tweeked with a bit of exagerration. My siblings and I always wondered, are my dad's memories completely accurate, or are they big fish stories? Yesterday I convinced my parents to join me on a trip to the Historical Society, where they have a vast collection of past Wisconsin newspapers on microfilm. Tucked away in a back room, you can look up La Crosse Tribune newspapers from the 1960s, organized by month in an old school card catalog or on a new school online database. The library has tons of microfilm machines that are available for open use. You retrieve the microfilm yourself from a shelving system, and you're free to start scanning it on a manual-roller or automatic-digital machine. We quickly found newspaper evidence confirming both of my dad's stories, and his reputation for veracity remains intact. He was very pleased with our findings (I think he may have started doubting his own memory). He also got swept up by all the big headlines on the newspapers' coverpages (Vietnam, Nixon, controversies over interstate construction). The library staff was very friendly and willing to help us along during our search process. The entire visit only took us about an hour, and that's pretty quick, demonstrating how organized they've got things. We tracked down exactly what we needed in a short time amidst an enormous volume of materials and with only a vagueidea of when it all had happened. We were able to make digital, emailed copies of the newspapers for free, and we made some paper printouts of the important pages for 25 cents/page. The Wisconsin Historical Society Library is an excellent resource for the state and a great place to check on family folklore. And here's an idea: You could make a scrapbook gift for a parent, comprised of newspaper clippings that confirm their favorite stories or show big events from their childhood.

Got rammed by a runaway van on Northport Drive, and driven through iron barricades. Snapped the…read morefront axel of my car, which was totaled. People called 911, and the response time was...wait for it ... Under 5 minutes. And the ambulance was just 2 minutes behind them. On a Sunday morning. For comparison, the police station was closer, and it was about 25 minutes before any officer showed up, making it hard to keep witnesses around. In fairness, they may all have been chasing the guy who hit us and took off. The firemen calmed us down, made sure the car didn't blow up, and helped flow traffic. The ambulance EMTs ran us through the drills., made sure we were alright for real. Nothing broken but the car. Top notch professionals. Made me feel good about paying taxes for a change. When officers arrived, they were great. A Good Samaritan chased down the hit and runner, and cops got him. His airbag went off, hood popped up, so he didn't get far. 5 star service.
