I used to be a frequent breakfast visitor to the Straffan tea rooms and four of us decided to…read morereturn today after a few months going to other venues. Today was not the same positive experience we used to enjoy. 1. I ordered the full Irish and asked for side of sweet potato (as shown on the vegetarian menu) instead of black pudding. The server said I can't have that. I didn't think I heard her correctly and asked if they have any potato. "Yes but you can only have it with the vegetarian breakfast as we have a limited supply." Never knew Ireland was short on spuds! 2. My friend has a sensitivity to egg yolks and asked for eggs with just whites. It couldn't happen as the chef can not separate (I'm not a chef but I can do this!) She then asked for the fried egg to be so well done that she could cut the yolk out. The eggs came nearly as runny as a poached egg. 3. We were offered a choice of white or brown toast with our breakfast. Later the server said that the white bread had not been cooked yet. We had to have homemade brown bread which is not the same with a full Irish breakfast. 4. We asked for jam for the brown bread. The server brought a mini side of jam that was barely enough for one piece of brown bread not the 8 slices at our table For the €13 breakfast (with coffees), we would expect a better experience like we get at Avoca's Egg Cafe

I popped in for breakfast with friends just before Christmas. Had a lovely poached egg with sausages (yummo - they source them from nearby Celbridge). The baked goods all looked gorgeous, and my son devoured his pastry without letting me try a bite! Staff was friendly and efficient, the prices were great, but mostly I'd recommend the Victorian Tea Rooms for the cosy atmosphere. Plus, the shopping at the Straffan Courtyard is not to be missed!

So fresh and delicious! It was a bit hard to find the restaurant because I expected "The Donkey Shed Restaurant" name on the road, but you have to go into the New barn Farm. (Green sign) and they have a market as well, you can see the chickens and other beautiful and well cared animals behind the fence. The kids love it. I'll go back again and again and again! I was a bit escepticle, the menu didn't interest me much, but wow!! I left there reeeaally happy!!!

Food was delivered incredibly quickly and they were able to seat a large family in a few minutes even though it was jammers. It was a while since we got the food so I can't remember what kind of burger I got (no wifi/data as we were in the sticks soo only seeing on Yelp now) but it was loaded with cheese and had a massive amount of meat. The ribs looked to die for, as you might be able to see by an earlier review posted with a picture. They were insanely good! I had a small taste and almost started drooling from how juicy and succulent it tasted! Along with the amazing food there is a little space outside that sells fresh veg and a small pen with little animals kept. Very family friendly environment!

Treated to some (heavy fuel) for the day of exploration. The baked beans, sausage and hash were epic, not to mention the "brown bread" and Barry's tea. If I still lived in Celbridge, this is definitely somewhere I'd be frequenting a lot more.. eh.. frequently..!!! Or maybe it's the lack of online presence?! I can't find anything about the cafe on the Castletown House website for example?! Why?! So here's what ye do. Go for a whopper walk up along the river, go over to the obelisk and imagine what it would have been like to have been hanging out with the Connolys and Johnathan Swifts and the likes, get a bitta wind in your hair, then get yourself over into the Courtyard Cafe in the grounds of the wonderful Castletown House, and get the warmth back in you. Get a nice sambo or hot meal and a lovingly made hot chocolate and cake to finish. You'll walk home with a spring in your step, guaranteed.

Having said that, after a pleasant stroll around the woodlands and lake, all I could talk about was going for coffee. This wooden building wouldn't look out of place in an Austrian skiing village. The decor is cute and there are inspirational signs all over the place, floral designs on the jugs and furry hot water bottles on the bar stools. The desserts didn't look too appetising (even for me) and the barista wasn't the chatty sort so we got our €2 herbal teas in takeaway cups and sat outside. A fire in the centre of the outdoor area blew smoke in our direction at regular intervals but this added to the feeling of adventure, magic and general hippiness that this place emanates. As it was an extremely windy day, the tablecloth kept lifting off the table, eventually capsizing my tea altogether. With that, we shook off our daydreams of fairies and elves, and headed for the hills.
