Munir Malik, the owner, is a very congenial fellow, who possesses the kind of eyes that speak of wisdom, humour and compassion hidden deep within... although the humour makes a bid for freedom at reasonably regular intervals! He is more interested to know why I don't have any children than he is to enquire about why I haven't had my duck down duvet cleaned since the iron age, and why he's never been commissioned to perform a service wash on my behalf. His face alternates between quizzicality with a hint of condemnation, and alarm tinged with more than a little consternation. I just smile my answers back at him, explaining my position in a light-hearted way that's suggestive of a belief that I have no need to justify my decisions to anyone. I like Munir, and I like his laundrette. It is simple and unaffected, just like the man himself... what you see is what you get. If I ever decide to have my duck down duvet cleaned by a professional, this is where I will come!

But even this isn't presenting any kind of threat to the livelihood of the business. Fabricare also offer service washes and ironing services. They accept dry cleaning jobs, but send the dry clean items off to be serviced elsewhere, and so you may have to wait slightly longer for this service than at other outlets that have dry cleaning facilities in-house. The business is owned by Mrs Crean,who owns another outlet on City Road, and so has a manager to run this shop on her behalf. It's a friendly little laundrette, with a good number of machines.

I went again a few months ago but they couldn't find it. I have just had a phone call from the manager, who very politely informed me that it's lost. Not only have they got an enviable reputation to trade on, but they have also got the other branches to back them up financially whilst they engage of a bit of a price war with the others. It's possible to get four items dry cleaned for £14.00 at the moment, and any duvet, regardless of size, can be cleaned for £12.00. Whilst I respect Freye Dry Cleaners, if anybody is going to professionally clean my duvet it's going to be the Penylan Laundrette I'm afraid... not because I know them to be better at cleaning duvets, but because the chap that owns this laundrette is a hoot!

Anyway they were very quick and thorough and removed all traces of the stain. The ladies who work here are friendly and knowledgeable, not to mention willing to speed up the collection process by a day or two in case you need your clothing for an important occasion. It's also worth noting that Freye offer an ironing and same-day tailoring and repair service. My only criticism is that they only accept cash payments (they may have added a card maching service since), so make sure you hit up the cash machine before picking up your garments.

Instead I decided to try my luck with my local Johnsons, and could not possibly have been more satisfied with the result. They have repaired the skirt so well that it looks brand new, and no sign of any damage. The service cost about £9, which is absolutely brilliant (it would have cost a million times more in London).
