If you have an hour this is a fun experience. You park at the bottom of the hill in a parking lot across from the incline. Parking was $8. Then you walk along the sidewalk to a staircase that crosses over the road. At the entrance they take your money cash only to ride. Round trip was $5 for adults and less for kids. We were able to load right away and the incline took us up the hill. The views were very pretty and the cars were fun to admire. When you get to the top the door opens and they have a small museum of pictures from historical times. You can then walk down a staircase to see the gears in action. Plus an outdoor observation deck to view the city. Luckily it was a nice day so we were able to enjoy all the experiences. Once at the top of the hill there isn't much to do. If you do anything in Pittsburgh, skip the sandwich with the French fries stuffed inside and just do this. Funicular railways like this make otherwise nondescript cities seem transcendent if only for the few minutes it takes to go up and enjoy the panoramic views. It's less calories, too. Opened in 1877, this incline is particularly effective in spotlighting the picturesque Three Rivers juncture of Downtown Pittsburgh (Photo 2). The view is enhanced by a multiplicity of the city's trademark yellow bridges (Photo 6). It's particularly entrancing at sunset even though the wind definitely kicks up on Mt Washington. A round trip ticket costs just $5 (cash only), and the journey on the vintage car takes about two minutes each way. Getting to the bottom station was a cinch because there's a parking lot below, which costs a minimum $8 for 2 hours. You then simply cross the covered pedestrian bridge. I imagine a line forms during peak hours, but on a Thursday at around 3:30PM, I ended up being the only passenger both ways. At the top, I took the brief stroll to the Points of View summit where I got even more panoramic views and a look at the statue of George Washington meeting Seneca leader Guyasuta (Photo 8). Parking at the lower level can be found on the street, not expensive at all! The employee working at the bottom was very sweet and cheerful. The ride up was great to see the view and there were not a lot of people in the car at the same time. I felt very safe the whole time. When I got to the top, I asked if there were any restrooms and the woman working at the Top was extremely rude to me. When I added on that the person at the bottom said that there was a bathroom, she suggested that that person is on drugs. It was very bizarre and uncalled for. The overlook from the top is beautiful and a few lunch spots nearby. I read that this was a nonprofit and full functional on their own. Cool experience but part of the staff really put a damper on it. read more

For $5.00 per round trip, you can make your way up to one of the highest points in Pittsburgh and gaze at the entire city. The view is beautiful! When we visited the Duquesne Incline, the line was long. It moves quickly, though. We only stood in line for 15 minutes. When you get to the bridge, it gives you a chance to oversee cars zipping by on the highway. The inside of the cable car fits 18 adults comfortably and it was a short, but fast ride up the hill. Staff kept everything pretty organized for the most part and they were friendly. There's a gift shop area at the top if you're on the hunt for souvenirs. This is a huge tourist attraction that I'd recommend visiting at least once. The last ride up is at 12:30 AM so they have extensive hours. I bet the views at night are also quite lovely. read more

After walking here from the other incline, this one was noticeably more crowded/popular. There are several framed prints, photos and articles along the walls, highlighting its history. There is a small snack bar/gift shop window as well. There were employees directing everyone as to where to go, which was helpful. These cars were larger, and our ride down Mt. Washington was over quickly. There was a long line to get in, spanning across the road and down a ways. TIP: get here early , especially on weekends and when the Pirates are in town. read more

The Duquesne Incline was such a cool experience! After walking up and across the overpass, we entered the main entrance. It costs $2.50 one way or $5 to ride up and down. I highly recommend paying for both ways. You can sit on different sides for all the views! It's a short ride to the top where you can visit the working museum, gift shop, exit to the street level, or stand in the line to head back down. A must do when visiting Pittsburgh. We took ride share here so not sure about parking. There are steps! It is a historic landmark and a great opportunity to see the beautiful cityscape from a high elevation. The fare is super cheap ($2.50 each way). My family and I really enjoyed this experience riding the iconic incline, which is the inspiration for Mr. Rogers' trolley, and we loved the view at the top as well. The whole experience is fairly quick and cheap, depending on how long you want to linger at the top before hitching a ride back down. Note that it is exact change only at the bottom. When I offered to give them a $10 because it was the only bill I had, they refused to take it and told me to break it in the souvenir shop at the top and pay them later. It was total trust that you're not used to these days. Gorgeous view at the top and you can go under the incline to see how it works. Very very cool experience. Came by to the Duquesne Incline one evening, and it was quite the experience! The ride up and back provided a great view of the city, and the overlook at the top of the incline was a really nice area from which to take in all of Pittsburgh. It was a hot day, though, and the stations and railcar itself were very hot, so keep that in mind when planning your visit. read more

I LOVE going on these sorts of conveyances... if I can ride up the side of a mountain in any random historical car, then I'm doing it. Our ride share driver left us at the top instead of the bottom (which is where you actually pay) so we only rode it on way but that was OK with us. We read all the signs while we were at the top and then rode down and paid. *Cash only and exact change* Don't miss the photos of the old switchback stairs that were in place before the incline cars. We then walked back from the funicular which was really enjoyable on a beautiful day. read more

I'm used to French names back in Detroit where sometimes we locals pronounce them as intended and sometimes the "correct" way to say them is a butchering of the French language- Gratiot anyone? - but Duquesne had me at a loss. Right after I finally learned the right way to say Monongahela they had to throw this at me! Well, it's not said like Dookwesney but simply Dookain. The walk up from the parking lot isn't demarcated but my eyes could trace a series of left turns leading to a pedestrian bridge over the road. The station is very 1800s, cramped & without many creature comforts but that's the nature of the beast here - you might be able to call it charm or educational. I flicked a big spiderweb just outside one window. Some impressive Charlotte's Web geometry on that thing. That spider was eating good! It's like management knew the place was lousy with flies and decided to leave it up. I have to respect cash only places in 2025 and inwardly titter at how they send people into a tizzy but exact change is wild! I guess they make quite a few extra dollars that way. And the cash box isn't in the box office but encased outside it! You drop your ducats in and when it fills up close to the top the attendant comes out with a narrow bar designed to fit the slot and just pushes the hoard of bills back down to the bottom. Speaking of the attendant when she emerged to perform this task I saw she was wearing pajama bottoms and Crocs! Sure, comfort is nice but if we have to pay with cash only and sit at these high backed wood benches or more likely stand since there are so few and not have ac and pile into this cramped slow mountain climbing trolley car cause that's how they did it in 1877 shouldn't she have to wear some stiff starched high collar with a corset and painful shoes just to help with that vibe? (This is Yelp so you might not know if I'm joking here especially if you haven't read other reviews from me.) There's two trains and one ascends as the other descends. It didn't take long to get on one even though the small station made it seemed like the place was packed. I can't imagine what it was like during rush hour when this device was actually important public transportation. The line must have went across the covered pedestrian bridge and down the sidewalk which must have been fun in inclement weather. The incline moves pretty slowly but surprisingly stealthy. The 4 mph speed wasn't a problem to me; I wanted to soak in the views and it did give it a sense of anticipation and tension. As a big fan of thrill rides I couldn't help but imagining we were climbing a 400 foot lift hill to plunge down an unseen drop at incredible speed in a large car without so much as a seatbelt in sight. The tin roof ceiling and the antique light hanging in the middle of the incline car looked cool enough for me to snap a picture. The real picture taking comes on the pad of concrete at the top - the almighty observation deck. It took us maybe three or four minutes to even be able to make it to the edge. Selfie takers were assembled, people were pointing and scanning to the horizons and Amish were happily using the coin operated swivel binoculars. My dad and I did our selfie due diligence and met Detroit Tiger Colt Keith's aunt and uncle. There's a little museum at the summit, again in how rooms were sized in the 1870s. Some interesting artifacts and history are to be found nonetheless. And of course there's a gift shop! I was tempted to buy an antiquey t-shirt or coffee mug but passed. The gift shop is an enclosed space with samples displayed on the outside but only the attendant can reach the merchandise on the inside and here again a line can form in this cramped space. I imagine it was once a newsstand that maybe also sold snacks and beverages? I took a peak outside to see if there was anything of interest to see there. Nothing much doing out there. I hear the Monongahela Incline has more going on at its summit but The views at the top are beautiful & I love this electric rail car stays open til 12:30 am. If I return to Pittsburgh I'd like to see some night views with the city all lit up. Going back down be mindful of what car is going to arrive next. There's two sides & if you absentmindedly line up by the wrong one like we did you'll be stuck waiting for longer. No signage either; you kinda gotta confer with other passengers on who's in line and where it should stretch. I nitpicked some stuff here but this is a cool historic attraction that was fun to nerd out on and provides great scenery. It's on the National Register of Historic Places which probably hampers their ability to renovate it to suit modern tourists who come to ride it & it should try to be authentic but there are little things they could definitely do to make this incline more user friendly. If you're in Pittsburgh, definitely check it out. The view is great but I loved the incline itself. It's really cool. Bring cash because they don't take cards. However, there is an ATM at the top and they will give you an IOU and you can pay on the way back down. It's a slow ride to the top so plenty of time for pics. Once at the top, you can take great pictures outside. Be sure to do the self guided tour once you are at the top so you can see the inner workings of the incline. Pretty cool. read more

So much nostalgia! I love as happy to take my littlest fella on an excursion. We will for sure do it again as it was a great misty evening. It was interesting, a little scary, and fun. Have change ready! We took uber so we could have freedom but there is plenty of parking available for cheap! The last ride is at 12:40am. The ride itself is a lovely experience offering some amazing views of downtown Pittsburgh. We were passing by and decided to try out this as our little adventure. You do have to have exact change to ride $5 round trip for an adult and we parked at the bottom and paid 8$. We got to ride it to the top, it was slow and calm. Once you get to the top you can go out to the overlook which was pretty cool as well. We also took a closer look at what makes the incline work which was nice to see. I wish there was more to do at the top. We walked out in hopes to bump into some coffee shops or ice cream shops but nothing. We took it back down and enjoyed the view once again. I don't know. We have been to other funiculars and trams in other cities so when we were looking for things to do on our visit this was a clear choice. Based on all the adds I saw, it's clearly marketed as a tourist attraction and technically this is just public transport that they sell some postcards for. The line/payment/ customer service situation is not fun, friendly or touristy. And, since I didn't read reviews I missed the tip about paying on the app. The parking is a pay lot across the street and it's a little pricey to ride public transport up a hill and back down. The views are beautiful but the observation deck is a little small for lots of humans at once. The restrooms are clean and the information provided is decent. We had a nice time but it definitely could have been nicer. If you are looking for a tourist experience, this really isn't it. But if you manage your expectations and just want to see the city view, it's worth a visit. read more

We drove to the lower station. There is an exit for paid parking but no clear direction on how to get to the lower station from the parking lot. We found a step trail through a wooded area that got us to the road and subsequently able to climb the steps/overpass to get to the station. Cash only but modestly priced. I had purchased the "All Day Pass" this morning back in Washington Junction and that not only covered my free parking at the metro station, it included the 40 minute journey into downtown and the return, the bus across the river and three local rides in the "free fare" zone and then, amazingly, it also includes the Incline in both directions! I was alone on the car in both directions so I didn't have anyone getting in the way of my selfies or my video of the climb/descent. I LOVE INCLINE RAILWAYS. It's a fun, quick thing to do while visiting Pittsburg. This incline is located closest to the downtown area. Parking lot has plenty of spaces but as usual, paid parking...wack. And then you got to walk over to the incline station which is about less than a 5 min walk. CASH ONLY. $2.50 each way and exact fare only. There's a change machine available before you pay so at least bring some kind of small bills. It's pretty cool to see the history of how this incline was created and why it was created. View was pretty as you overlook downtown, Acrisure Stadium and other nearby bridges. This experience is as long or short as you want to make it.
