I guess she's gonna have to sit this year out because unfortunately this was the school she chose. She has been trying to change her program with no help because she can't log into the system after changing her password multiple times per her advisors request. She was compelled to change her program after speaking with her advisor, but she has received no assistance with their system issues. I guess Fridays are their days to chill because you literally can't reach anyone. I tried going up to the school to see if she could possibly get this resolved today, but they had the doors locked at 2:00pm when we arrived. This place is poorly run.

Just a few of the major problems IN MY OPINION: 1. TIY hires teachers with ZERO TEACHING EXPERIENCE even though they promise you are paying for in-person classes with someone who knows how to teach. Teaching is a complex skill in its own right and to assume that someone with industry experience won't crash and burn when struggling to explain abstract concepts is ludicrous. This "teacher" will take all of their students along for the ride and if they lack empathy and self awareness (not in abundance for software developers in general) they will not be too concerned about the implications for students who are forking over tons of cash for the experience. 2. TIY's main concern is about raking in the money (seriously how can the quality be anywhere near decent when they've opened 10 schools in one year?). Need more evidence of the corporate greed factor? Their top dog worked as a broker on Wall Street with Jordan Belfort (aka the Wolf of Wall Street) and brags that "Through that relationship, guys convinced me I could make a whole lot more money on Wall Street than if I finished school." Google Peter Barth and Jordan Belforth. This is who you'll be giving your money to. Beware. 3. They do not have your best interests in mind nor do they care about you - this is all a marketing ploy (see above). 4. Your opinions and particular needs as a student will be ignored and you will be demonized if you don't follow the campus agenda set by the particularities of the campus admin -- not your instructor. The admins wield all the power even though they are not developers and they absue that power quite freely. 5. The Durham space is WAY TOO SMALL for 45+ students - you will want to leave as soon as lecture is over if you require any peace of mind to focus. Can't they at least afford to upgrade the campus location with all the $$$ they rake in from students? Oh they don't care?! Right. Enough said. 6. The Durham CAMPUS INTERNET IS OUT OR EXTREMELY SLOW AT LEAST 50% OF THE TIME. Guess I gotta repeat myself : Can't they at least afford to upgrade the campus infrastructure with all the $$$ they rake in from students? Oh they don't care?! Right. Enough said. 7. It's a CATCH-22 for students - those who may be critical of the program are not able to speak out, for fear that it will impact their future abilities to land a job through TIY connections. Even with all the above, I learned how to code -- but due to my own efforts and working with fellow students. I hope that in the future pseudo-schools like this will be held accountable for their actions and not allowed to behave in such unethical ways. Supporting students and their success is the point of a school and sadly TIY doesn't recognize that at all. Instead prepare for "group think" and persistent bullying if you give them your money.

My son went there in June and though the counselors are polite and upbeat college students, we were less than satisfied with the overall quality of the experience. The Pros: - I did find the camp counselors energetic, upbeat, polite, and socially engaging with the kids. I do think that they do a good job of trying to make the experience a fun one and facilitate getting the kids comfortable with one another. - The UNC campus is a nice venue for the camp. The Cons: - The first part of the disappointment relates to the fact that even though we had signed my son up for a particular track (FPS - Unreal Development Kit), on the first day, they had him attending another track. My son, who is 12, brought it to their attention, but was told that he was in the right class and he must not have remembered what we had signed him up for. My wife talked to the camp director immediately after hearing that from my son the first night. After the camp director checked into it at my wife's request, it turns out that there were two kids (one being my son) with the same first name and last Initial. Since check-in is done by finding your name tag that displays only first name and last initial, the problem occurred there, so they actually had two campers attending the wrong tracks for the first day. It makes me wonder about those kids that have medications distributed while they are there? Do they ever get the wrong medicines? - The instruction format is not what we expected. We thought that it would be instructor lead tutorials, with hands-on exercises and mentoring as follow-up to those. As my wife and I asked more and more questions of my son in regards to the structure of the day, it sounds like it was largely self-paced discovery and you could ask the instructor / counselor any question you might have. I was very disturbed at the "Class Graduation" when the counselor said to my son, that "he heard that my son was doing some real cool stuff with his level, but he never got the opportunity to play through it". The counselors are good people and I do not intend to paint a picture otherwise. They are also young college students that are not trained instructors and are not necessarily expert at the topic they are teaching. Considering the cost of the camp, the program that my son attended did not provide anything close to a good value. For any parent considering sending the kids to this camp with the hopes that it will further their technological knowledge of game development and the software tools associated with it, you will be far better off buying a good PC, downloading the tools for free (www.UDK.com, www.Unity3d.com, www.yoyogames.com, etc.) and going to YouTube to watch the ample tutorials there. Once my son is old enough (needs to be a rising ninth grader) we will be sending him to the game development camps at Wake Tech at ~ 1/3rd the cost.
