Seemed like that way there were always seats for people in the restaurant. The line to order was pretty long but once you order they bring the food out so fast! I also like how you can add things to your tab even after your initial order & those items come out just as fast. So no need to get back in line! They bring the food to your table. We love trying a bunch of things so we got some of the most popular. I got the crispy chicken biscuit because I saw a lot of good reviews. YUM! I'm normally not a fan of fried chicken but I LOVE how they make their sandwiches with chicken thighs! The breasts from diff restaurants always seem dry but the chicken thigh was PERFECT. That chicken gravy is finger licking delicious! & the biscuit was so soft. I ate every bite of this biscuit & now after writing about it I want another. My husband had the traditional biscuit and he ate all of that as well. He said it was delicious and I didn't even get to try any because it was gone in 2 minutes flat. The Portland breakfast was basically a biscuit taken apart. Had the sausage and eggs with a biscuit on the side along with the hash browns, which were AMAZING. Believe the hype about those hash browns.. my 2 year old thoroughly enjoyed them as well. We all shared a bit of the blueberry pancakes and they were ok. I did like how they weren't overly sweet. My husband ordered a muffin, not sure which muffin it was but I know it wasn't the blueberry muffin. It was average and not much flavor. Pretty moist though! I also had the lemon ginger tea thinking it was going to be sweet. It's not sweetened so unless you like plain chilled tea then don't order it. Ala carte is the way to GO! Everything we ordered was surprisingly delicious! I was apprehensive about Dutch's at first with the fast food type ordering. But the food is definitely well prepared. We had a toasted bagel, avocado mash (fantastic!!), two eggs and a side of cream cheese. So basically a build your own avocado toasted bagel. The avocado was mashed fresh and delicious with, no add ins. Your healthy ordering can go south pretty fast at Duchess. My husband had fried banana bread and our friend had blueberry pancakes, which actually looked really good. Dutch's is one of my typical go-to breakfast/brunch spots here in Portland. I'm a fan of Dutch's for a number of reasons: 1. Convenience and ease. It's right in downtown. Order at the counter is quick, and food comes out fast. I don't have to wait to eat--especially on the weekends--like at a lot of other brunch spots in Portland. 2. Plenty of good vegetarian options including the veggie hash, breakfast sandwiches, pancakes, etc. The only thing I wish is that they had veggie sausage as an option. For vegans, I think it's limited to just the avocado toast, but I could be wrong on that. 3. Casual, community vibe. Nothing fancy but just right. Really feels like a local Portland spot. I'm always seeing the same faces, which is nice. 4. The breads are to die for. The bread the avocado toast came on was some of the best I've ever had. The biscuits are equally as good. Wasn't originally going to write anything about this place, but I definitely have a soft spot for restaurants that go above and beyond to make gourmet and improvised versions of classic everyday staples; the fat kid in me was screaming when I saw that Dutch's did a homestyle take on the McGriddle, while the semi-drunk adult was like "stfu kid, you're in public." Dutch's MacDutch is pretty much everything I described above with a little twist; you can choose to have it served with pulled ham as opposed to sausage and/or bacon which I thought was an interesting choice of meat for this medium. I would have enjoyed this more if the eggs were semi-scrambled, but I guess Dutch's decided to keep to the original and serve it fried. The biscuits had this soft oatmeal-like texture to them and the maple syrup wasn't so intolerably overpowering like at Mickey D's that I was grabbing for coffee with each sip. If you don't know, now you know. Dutch's is the bomb! I've been twice, once when they first opened years ago and once more recently. Everything they post looks amazing and I'm always down to return. On weekends there might be a line out the door, but it's worth the wait. If the tables are full, one will most likely be available by the time you order and are ready to sit. Last time I got a mint cream donut and a fried chicken on a biscuit breakfast sandwich. My friend got the avocado toast and I had such food envy, although mine was delicious. What a delightful little breakfast place! I had heard of it but never been -- but boy was it actually really good!! Came in while waiting for the lineup for the parade on a Saturday and ended up ordering the spicy chicken sandwich. I was apprehensive mainly because I don't like hot sauces but really like spicy chicken sandwiches. Lo and behold it came out soon and it was actually quite good. I would definitely have still preferred for the spicyness to be INSIDE the chicken or the skin/breading but ... It wasn't too bad. Friend had the biscuits and gravy that was huuuge. Expecting an onslaught of similar hangry people, I prepared for the worst - until I saw how much space there is at this joint. Tables galore! Dutch's has a fun theme - sort of an outdoors, camping idea. Their menu is filled with vegetarian and meat-eater options alike, and they often have specials available too. On this day, I ordered the special - strawberry pancakes. I also ordered some hashbrowns. HOLY MOTHER. The servings were plentiful, the prices were right, and I experienced a whole new side of brunch euphoria. Their iced coffee is also a must. Make sure you get that. Some reviews say the cafeteria feel kinda turns them off - I love it. Seating for brunch in Portland without a wait? YAS. Only thing they're missing is mimosas, but you can get that anywhere else downtown, so maybe start here for the real food before you load up on the morning champagne. We have been there numerous times over the eight years that we've lived in southern Maine. And I've known Ian Dutch since his Belfast high school days back in the day. We waited in line to order, then picked a seat by the window, watching the street passers and sipping the coffee, which was really good. (Also possibly had CBD in it? I can't believe I gave this place anything less than 5 stars at one point in time. It has quickly become our favorite brunch spot in Portland, and my husband is very picky when it comes to his breakfast food. Everything we've ever ordered from here has been delicious, whether it be breakfast or lunch. For breakfast, my must-trys are the Spicy Chicken Biscuit (the hot sauce is addictive) and the Ham and Cheese Deluxe (that pulled ham is so tender, and the red pepper jelly makes the dish). My husband swears by the Not-So-Traditional. For lunch, I find it difficult to stray from the Cuban (seriously, the best Cuban I've ever had with amazing bread, plenty of pork, and homemade mustard). I have to get it every time I'm in Portland. It's that good. Don't sleep on their hash browns either. They're more like homemade tater tots, and they are delicious (though they don't travel the best--be warned). I really miss eating here in-person, but they do a good job with pick-up orders over the phone, and all the staff were doing an admirable job with COVID-19 precautions. In a nutshell: Hearty, Delicious, Quick. I certainly couldn't eat at Dutch's every week- it's a little too overwhelming/hearty in that regard, but the food is certainly very very good. My husband, brother and I all ordered the spicy chicken biscuit (combo with tots), scallion stallion (combo with tots), and the breakfast burrito, all with a small cup of coffee, and all delicious as we shared them across the three of us. Fun fact: the coffee does not in fact have CBD as labeled, it's apparently their house name for the coffee.. and very good coffee at that. The spicy chicken biscuit and scallion stallion bagel had to be my favorite items. The biscuit is seasoned perfectly & messy to eat because it's on a delicious buttery biscuit, but completely worth it. The bagel was loaded with delicious cream cheese and bean sprouts which just took the bagel to another level altogether. The burrito was also good, but just not as memorable or an item I'd consider ordering again. The tots (more like crispy potato squares) are in a category of their own, and I highly suggest at least trying them once. Super soft potato inside and very crisp exterior. We had some leftovers and warmed them up at home 4 days later and they were just as delicious.. if not more! The food also came out 5 minutes after ordering.. Love this place! The atmosphere, the wall art, the food! There is nothing to not love about Dutch's! I found this place on accident, going there on a Father's Day when my father and I couldn't find anywhere else with no wait. What a find indeed! They have great food, from their different yet phenomenal hash browns, to their addictive pulled ham breakfast burritos, all the way to their delicious pastries. Not even mentioning their house made hot sauce.... amazing. I love the counter service aspect, and while usually busy, it always seems to go pretty fast. You can sit wherever (my favorite is right under the bigfoot wall art, where I can see everything going on in the kitchen!) The bathrooms are even fun! Covered in maps of Maine, they provide stickers for you to Karl where you came from, or where you're going. The one flaw I find at times is that they tend to change their hours on a whim. At times I've arrived an hour before closing and been told they are closing early. Or arrived at opening, and had to wait 20 minutes to get in. The bread was two perfectly grilled thick pieces of country toast topped with mashed avocado, scallions, lemon and egg. It was crunchy, creamy, nutty...so many textures and flavors.
