Keeping it in the Greek family This classic inner Adelaide suburban corner shop used to house George and his family serving up deli items when every suburb had a reliable deli for the last minute, need it right now milk, ice cream or bread before we had supermarkets open to 9.00pm (yes this is awhile ago). Back then Parkside was a bit dingy, a bit boho and very multicultural - Greek and Italian families predominated. Fast forward 25 years and Parkside has now been gentrified and and is a bit yuppiefied but blessedly Duthy St deli harks back to its deli origins and not just in name only. Vasili our host, has been smoothly operating a very successful cafe here for a number of years. Good service, well trained baristas, efficient chefing on view and a consistent, reliable extremely well presented selection of breakfast and lunch cold and hot items. Shrewdly but thankfully very competitively priced in a locale that could cough up more. Always good and always fresh -congratulations on maintaining the tradition in a slice of slightly out of the way suburbia. PS I do miss the Haigh's dark chocolate buttons though that used to accompany the coffee (I'd be prepared to pay a little more to have the chance to drop one in to create a gooey chocolaty melting moment on top of my latte/cappuccino froth). Walking into this place was like walking in to how I imagined George Costanzas father would run his restaraunt, and for anyone who's visited here you'll know exactly what I'm on about spending more than half an hour watching the staff dynamics at this place. Especially got a laugh from the visible work 'notice board' reminding wait staff to generally stop being idiots and stay off their phones during service piled amongst other threats. Does explain the faultless service on their part. Food is pricey but utterly amazing, the space is huge and the service is awesome so ruling with an iron fist must be working for them! Coffee was made by who I assume was the owner as he exuded the kind of confidence with a coffee machine only decades could foster. The eggs were perfect, my partners french toast and burger were beautiful and all up it was a great and riotous experience. Will be back! read more

Duthy Street Deli might be old news for some, but it is important to note that they have stood strong for many years. I have only ever stopped in for coffee and cake in the past. This time my partner and I were in the neighbourhood and decided to give their lunch menu a go. The menu hosts some lovely café style picks like burgers, salads, soups, etc... It was a warm day and I decided to go for a Halomi Salad. Something refreshing and comfy. This café is definitely generous when it comes to portioning for halomi. I will never complain about a generous serve of cheese! The salad was fresh, full of rocket, mescal lettuce, cherry tomatoes, onion, cucumber, baby spinach, roasted pumpkin and pinenuts. The best part was the sweet balsamic and honey dressing. It may have had a hint of mustard missed through it as well. It really matched the halomi and brought the whole dish together. Sometimes simple is the best! If you are after coffee, I would say this is one of the better places for coffee in Parkside/Unley area. Strong and full flavoured coffee. More of an Italian Espresso style. This café is really popular amongst the locals, in the morning you need to fight to get a seat. So pop in early. If you are after a all day breakfast destination, they serve brekkie until 3pm. So great for those who want their eggs florentine at 2pm! Oh, and parking sometimes is a little difficult in the area. You might find that you have to park a couple streets down and walk. Duthy Street is a very busy road in the morning with people going to work. read more

You can tell the bacon and egg foccacias are good when they're dripping all over the table. What a stand out breakfast cafe, rivalling Queen Street Cafe and Brown Dog for relaxing atmosphere and cool surrounds. Newbies ooh and ahh over the huge meals and regulars nod wisely. 'Yes, you see, this place IS as good as everyone says.' The pancakes are the sweetest, fluffiest things, like dreamy clouds of breakfast goodness. And as already mentioned, the owner is very considerate and attentive. When I got a bottle of water from the fridge and asked for glasses, and he pointed out that the glasses were sitting in the fridge right next to the water, did he make me feel like an idiot as he should have? When I think of a nice place to have breakfast or an early lunch, I think of Duthy Street Deli. Everything from its coffee, to the presentation of the food, to the decor and the layout of interior... it is what I envision in my mind when I think of a great place to have breakfast. I can't think of time I haven't enjoyed eating there, though I don't go there as regularly as I used to since I moved further away from the city. They've got plenty of room inside if you happen to decide you want to walk in, but keep in mind that it can get pretty busy on weekends especially around the peak time around 11pm when late breakfast and early lunch goers clash. Their menu is written on a board above the cashier and though the average price of a meal is about $17, it is well worth the money. The food tastes good and the presentation of it is just as appealing. I really feel I am having a good, healthy high quality breakfast every time I go to this place and I am not exaggerating. If I still lived closer to the city, I would probably be there more regularly. Still, that doesn't stop me from making the occasional 30 minute drive down south from where I live just to have poached eggs and salmon on rocket and rye bread to finish off with a flat white coffee. Duthy St Café doesn't look like too much from the outside but it is delightful! It's another urban meets hipster café, serving organic, healthy snacks and meals for even the pickiest eater. These include organic sourdough fruit toast, haloumi salad and gourmet bacon and eggs. You also can't go past their spread of desserts laid out temptingly in the glass display cabinet. The outdoor area is very small and you are basically sitting on the road, however, the indoor area is spacious and well lit with natural light, so there is really no need to sit outside unless you are a smoker. Surprisingly, for a café selling kitsch organic food it is very reasonably priced, hence I seem to end up there at least once a week! On a not so positive note, the service leaves a lot to be desired. However, this does not deter me from going, just make sure you take a good book or friend to entertain you! read more

A breakfast of awkwardness is far better than a night of loneliness I seem to have found myself in a moral dilemma. A moral dilemma regarding dining. Yes, I know, it is the worst kind of moral dilemma one could face. Firstly I must tell you that I love eggs benedict, I have all their albums. It's my thing, almost as much as repeating what people say in a funnier way and getting more laughs. That's right, I'm one of those. Anyway I can't describe the joy I get from a perfect plate of eggs benny and I would be happy to travel far and wide for the perfect version of this delectable dish! Lucky for me I live in Parkside, a mere couple of streets away from Duthy Street Deli Café and the place I consider to be the best serverers (my thing is also to make up words) of eggs benedict in Adelaide! Their eggs benedict are as delish as David Duchovny. Californication days NOT X-Files, obviously. Anyway, this place is pretty close to perfect. Firstly, they had me at 'breakfast 'till three'. Nothing better than eggs benedict after a big night out on the bevvys at any time you manage to scrape yourself out of bed. Not only do they have a great range of breakfast delights, they also have a great selection of pre-made baguettes, not to mention some killer salads and other lunch-time offers. They are always stocked with magazine and newspapers to peruse if breakfasting alone... A bold move but one I respect. Fantastic food and a vivacious vibe in a perfect location, what is the moral dilemma here you ask? Well it's the service. The casual waitresses who run the food are fine, about what I would expect at a busy café, but the thing that has got me in a tizz are the owners! At times, a trip to Duthy Street can feel like you've teleported to the set of 'Grumpier Old Men' without the amusement factor. Why you would want to be rude to the customers who are paying ya bills, I dunno! The thing is, when the amazing eggs benedict come with an unordered side serving of arrogance and impoliteness the dish just doesn't taste so pleasant. So much so that I amconsidering a boycott. First off, I would like to declare that this is my local brunch hangout. Now that we have the housekeeping out of the way, please let me explain what is (and isn't) so amazing about this little suburban cafe. I am picky with my eggs. Very picky with my eggs. I'm talking, if my whites are jiggly, and my yellows are no longer jiggy, we have a problem. This never seems the case at Duthy street Deli. No longer are the days where I have to woe over whether or not my eggs will be cooked correctly to my liking! Now I have tried most of the menu. It doesn't change all that often, but it doesn't really need to as it covers the basics and a little more. The baked goods and cakes are always great. They are fresh, interesting and presented in such a way that makes me wonder if it is really worth that extra effort. I mean, I would eat the cakes off a paper bag if they gave it to me (that's how good they are). Let's get back to what makes it less than perfect. Sometimes the coffee takes quite some time to come out, and might not be to the greatest of standards. You have to fight amongst the "cool Unley Mums" for a table, whether this is a bad thing or not I'm not too sure (depends on what you're in to I suppose). And for some reason the toast is just that little bit too tough to cut through with ease, and that irritates me. The bottled juices are always in date, the tap water from the fridge you collect yourself is chilled (most of the time), and the decor is clean enough for me not to notice that it's not. The place is clearly owned by a European family, but that's part of the charm and I love it. What an unassuming little place! It looks a little dingy from the outside (and - to be honest - a little dingy inside, too), but the food and service at this place is on point! Not the usual breakfast fare, I opted for the vegetarian special - corn fritters with a tomato-ey sauce, sauteed spinach, and poached eggs - and mushrooms on the side. Now, the fritters by themselves weren't too much to write home about - pleasant, sure, but not amazing. With the smokey flavour in the tomato-ey sauce? Holy moly, get in my face. The mushrooms?! Um, what are these cooked in exactly? They're wonderful. My boyfriend went for the truffled eggs with chorizo and a side of haloumi, and it got rave reviews. The haloumi side consisted of 2 huge slabs (1 of which he graciously gave to me) - a fantastic deal for money! The price of the food in general was exceptionally good. We went on a Monday so the place was pretty bare, and parking was super easy. The staff were friendly and helpful despite how few of us there were. All in all a great breakfast experience! read more

The Duthy Street Deli is squirreled away on one of my most frequented stretches of tarmac on my way to town. I've visited here a few times and have had varied experiences depending on the time of day and who seems to be on. A highly popular coffee spot, I'd recommend getting here before the rush and visit in the early mornings. The coffee is decent, although I've had a few ho-hum cuppas here and tend to avoid their black coffees in favour for a milky one. The menu is varied and I've found the offerings to be nice but not outstanding. As a non-egg eater, breakfast is limited to a few options but I opt here for coffee and something sweet. read more

I was so excited when I saw the positive reviews about this place as I was in the area and in desperate need of a coffee. I ordered a long black and the mini GF banana bread. The coffee tasted burnt which almost provoked the mid afternoon grumps, especially as I had been looking forward to my coffee for hours. The banana bread that he gave me was actually just normal banana bread loaf slices, not nearly as pretty as the GF version in the display cabinet. I will come back here when next in Adelaide, as I like to be proven wrong when it comes to cafes but at this stage my hopes have been smashed from a height. Will update opening times and meal prices after next visit... I've lived a ten-minute walk from Duthy Street Deli for close to six years. I go through phases where I'm there five days a week, then I bore of the monotony. But the reality is, I love the familiarity of the place which is just one of the reasons I keep coming back. The cafe is on Duthy Street just north of Wattle Street intersection. When locals say, "I'll meet you up at Duthy Street" they're referring to the cafe rather than the street itself. The cafe has had the same owner since I started going there and is hugely popular with residents from Unley Street through to Fullarton Road, and most likely the surrounding suburbs. I think one of it's best features is its fantastic service. The owner, Vasil, is behind the counter taking orders 90% of the time. When he's not, one of the other regulars is holding fort. The fact that they retain their staff is just one sign of great management. Joe is the barista and if he's behind the machine, you're guaranteed a great cup. In fact, I'm not sure when/if he has a day off as he's there nearly every time I drop in. A distinguished older gentleman, who I can only assume is Vasil's father is often about the place, rolling cutlery and serviette or clearing plates. On occasion I've felt like I've dropped in a European friend's home and been warmly welcomed with offers of delicious treats to fill my belly. The menu offers a great variety of brunch options available all day and other light lunch specials. The kitchen makes most of the dishes to order, but there is plenty of wraps and rolls in the display to choose from. It's packed here on Sundays - definitely their busiest trading day, however you can book a table or I sometimes call ahead as I'm leaving home on foot and ask them to hold me the next table that becomes available. I've also phoned ahead to place a takeway coffee order if I'm in a rush. One of my favs for brunch is the poached eggs with truffle and sour dough bread for $xx.xx. If I'm after a salad, I'll order the haloumi salad for $15.90, although it's changed in the past few months so I now order it without the dressing and choose a thick balsamic dressing on the side instead (warm tahini dressing makes me want to vomit). Desserts are presented with flair, usually on a platter with a fancy swirl of raspberry, cream or chocolate sauce and maybe a fanned strawberry. Coffees are served with a chocolate button on the saucer. It's such a little gesture, but I don't know anywhere else that does it, and I'm so used it it now that if they forget, I don't hesitate in asking for one (the bonus being I then usually get two). It's these little indulgences that put Duthy Street Deli high up on my list of favourite cafes. You'll be treated with the same enthusiasm if you order lunch, desserts and drinks or nurse one cup of coffee for an hour while flicking through a glossy magazine. Things to note, it closes at 5pm during the week and around 4pm on the weekends. I know they are already open seven days, but I've often wanted a late afternoon cuppa and have had to drive somewhere else. They are one of the few places that don't offer a loyalty card, but I think the prices are slightly cheaper here anyway and they have such a loyal following, they just don't need to. I've heard people say horrible things about the customer service here. Apparently, they are "arrogant, self-important, snobs." However, I came here for the first time recently (despite living 10 minutes away from the area) and didn't find them to be horrible at all. Okay, my table wasn't clean. It had bread and cake crumbs all over it, and looked like it had been dirty prior to the person sitting there before me. But the cafe was packed, so, what? Am I supposed to throw a tantrum over a few crumbs? As I work in a cafe and have worked in hospitality for as long as I can remember, I guess I'm much more tolerant because I know what it's like - just place your order and be on with it. Our food was awesome - the presentation was good, ingredients used were fresh and high quality, and considering it was super busy our food actually came out pretty quickly. This place is just around the corner from my house so I regularly go there for a quick bite. I have had pretty much everything on the vegetarian menu. Unfortunately all the food is a bit bland, especially for the prices. The eggs were overdone (a good poached egg can be the make or break of a breakfast) which is totally unacceptable for a place charging those prices. I have also ordered many coffees from duthy street deli. And have noticed when the boss is on the machine my soy flat white tastes burnt and the milk tastes odd. So I decided to watch him make it one day. He over poured the shot and then proceeded to use dairy instead of soy in my coffee. Needless to say that is not cool. One important thing to say is every time I go there I am greeted straight away by at least one staff member and the meals are prompt. When I frequent cafes and restaurants I always like to watch the staff (guess who the boss is etc), and these staff look exceptionally unhappy. This was confirmed when I spoke to an ex worker, she quit because she was bullied constantly by the boss. I don't like to support hospitality places which don't do right by their staff. All in all the place is fine for a quick bite, I would recommend the fruit salad. The furniture is comfortable (so rare), although a bit warn, as are the walls and tables, I don't have a problem with this though. The atmosphere is ok. However as I stated above I prefer not to support hospitality businesses who bully their staff and my coffee to have the ingredients I a)ordered and b) payed extra for. Forgive my pardon, but I was telling people that this place had shut down for a short while last year. Why? Well, that's what it looks like from the side street, which I so commonly drive down. Graffiti wall, missing tables and chairs... perhaps it was just the winter wind. Luckily however, I was wrong and this place is alive and kicking. Good thing too, because I love its vibe and location. For some reason the cafe went through a stage where it wasn't very good...but then rejoice! Those days left a Malvern residence and now Duthy Street Deli is up there with some of the best. True story. The cafe itself looks kind of grungy, but in a good way! Both inside and out has this rather raw feel similar to say hypothetically... the home of the young/cool neighbours down the street. Understood? And then finally to the critical information: All day breakfast and lunch menus on offer, hoorah! Served along side a good cup of coffee if desired. Expect to grab your Eggs Benedict with leg ham for $15, or your berry flavoured pancakes for $12.90. Let me also just tell you, the menu expands far more than just that!
