Lovely little, modern stadium with a capacity of around 25,000. This gives it a nice atmosphere compared to the 50,000+ Premiership clubs. Around the group are lots of facilities and amenities, so even if one member of the family goes to the game, theres restaurants, bars and a Wacky Warehouse right next door! The football is also affordable compared to many teams generally £15 - £20 a ticket for Premiership!

    Wigan Athletic FC - Wigan Athletic v Bournemouth 07 02 15

    Wigan Athletic FC

My friend Ann found that her hair was falling out, which is why everyone now calls her "Wig Ann"…read more This team is named after her. She's still very athletic though, which is why we call her "Wig Ann, Athletic." First-Hand Experience: Wigan is one of my fave underdog teams. I've seen them play once at the DW and twice away from home around the country. They have always represented themselves well. I last saw them in 2011. Now that they have fallen from grace, I wish them a speedy recovery. Their owner's oft-racist and oft-unwise remarks and tirades are the only reason I give them 4 instead of 5. That, and the fact that they can't fill a stadium. This team, I have mixed feelings about. Roberto Martinez and Paul Jewell really put them on the map, two of my favourite managers. But their owner Dave Whelan, famous for making meat pies, is a bit of a racist and nationalist, and gets on my nerves sometimes. I also respect him in other ways though. They were founded in the 1930s so they're a relatively new team. They play in blue and white and are called the Latics. They were in the Prem for ages, until they randomly, crazily won the FA Cup in 2013, and were relegated the same season. That's the only glory the club has ever had, after being the League Cup runner up in 2006. So well done to them for that, what a fairy tale. The stadium is often empty and the owner is questionable, and for that reason I'll give them a 4 instead of 5.

But the stadium is not. First-Hand Experience: More info about my personal experience at this stadium - I am a bit of a w**re for the Reebok. I still call it the Reebok even though it's the Macron now. To me it was always the Reebok. I first came here in 2004 and was amazed that bats were flying around all over the stadium! Very cool indeed. When I came in 2005 I was able to see a Prem game here (against Arsenal of all teams) and it was absolutely fantastic. The crowd was packed, intense, and it was just a beautiful night. One of the best stadiums I've ever been to of any size, anywhere. Bolton really know how to get behind their team. I've been back in 07, 2011, and 2014, and I've used the adjacant retail park many times too. One of my fave stadiums in the country, and a place which every fan should visit. I've been to most UK & US stadiums, due to lifelong obsessions with travel, sport & especially footy (soccer to Americans). Born & raised in England, I followed Oxford United (hometown team) to stadia all over the country at away games, and later Liverpool (fave team) around. Every stadium review - like all my reviews - are from first-hand personal experience, usually from several visits. In 2011, I was on music tour in the UK, and visited most stadiums for fun in my spare time. As recently as Fall 2014, when I was "stuck" in UK for 3 months, I went to hundreds yet again while travelling. I have pictures of me at most, which I'll post later. Also, when back in UK I'll take more pix, and add more stadia! *** return to regular review *** It's one of the most beautiful stadiums in the UK. It's absolutely stunning. It's amazing that it's in Bolton of all places. A real palace of a place, and absolutely gorgeous. A small town like Bolton, with a stadium like this? Amazing. Very very lucky fans, that's for sure. It may be the prettiest stadium in the country. It can hold almost 29k and is way SW of town but that's okay. It opened in 1997. The video for Chris Martin of Coldplay singing "Fix You" was filmed at this stadium. There's a statue of Nat Lofthouse outside, and one day there will be a statue of Neil Lennon outside ;) Maybe.

Community farms are such a good thing! Whereas if you set foot on most commercial farms you are…read moreprobably trespassing, startling animals or taking a risk in terms of health and safety, the whole purpose of community farms is to let everyone who wants get hands on. Greenslate is probably the big daddy of community farms locally. It would seem a decent amount of funding has allowed them to quickly develop the site and the range of activities they offer. I've visited Greenslate just the once for their Xmas Fair, and a what an impressive event it was. The scene was like Constable tableau redone for our times. The allotments, the market garden of field and polytunnel crops, the farm shop (all fruit & veg sold here is organic), stalls by local craftspeople, pigs, goat, chickens, outdoor pizza oven, a cauldron of beans cooking over an open fire. Homebaking and also hot food was available on the day - jacket potatoes with beans, vegan curry or goat curry - something for everyone, really! Greenslate is a care farm, so you could perhaps ask to be referred here as a care client, but everyone is welcome to volunteer and lend a hand. I know one mum who brings her 4-year old to the kids club, and she tells me her daughter loves it. Other friends have enjoyed the djembe African drum circle events in the tipi. I'm interested in market gardening and cooking myself. I like the look of their winter polytunnel salads, which are cut to order so it really doesn't come fresher! They also have an orchard of over 30 different varieties of fruit trees (apples, plums, pears, etc). Once that matures, that will be a fantastic educational resource to show at a glance how well various fruit tree varieties grow locally. If you are looking to change the world, note that Greenslate is an organic permaculture farm, and central part of Billinge & Orrell Transition Town. Good to get involved!

All our cakes are home baked with organic flower. Our shop is stocked with lots of healthy, ethical stock including a range of plastic free goods. We have lots of kids activities on the farm including kids club and farm club. The farm has chickens, goats, rabbits, pigs, ducks. Of course, we have lots of lovely fresh eggs. Our animals are looked after by people with learning difficulties in our care farm. Entrance to the site is usually free and dogs are welcome in our cafe.
