During the renovation lots of thoughts were given to the design and a good view. And the view is what makes Café Piritta special. There won't be many other places in Helsinki where you can enjoy your coffee while looking over some of the city's most important landmarks (e.g. Helsinki Cathedral, Central Railway Station and the National Museum) and at the same time sitting in an idyllic green surrounding next to the water. You can enjoy the view either from inside through the big glass windows or from the big summer terrace. Be aware that even though it's not not located right in the center Café Piritta is not one of the cheapest places.

I reckon it has great views over the square towards Tuomiokirkko (the big white church in Helsinki), but the darkness of winter evenings in Finland didn't allow much this visit. We dined upstairs in a private cabinet with a set menu. Lots of Finnish tradition in the food: mushroom soup starter, sautéed fish fillet main (Arctic char?), finishing with a a sorbet (raspberry and pomegranate) and assorted chocolates, berries and nuts. I experienced the proverbial "soup to nuts" at Sunn :) All in all, it was an enjoyable dinner and I think their cabinets are a great venue choice if you're looking for a quiet, intimate setting to host a group dinner. The restaurant also serves breakfast in the mornings 7:30-9:30, mainly for the hostel guests, but quite practical for us working at the campus too, but it's the lunch that is worth coming here fore. It didn't take long for the word to spread about MAU KAS in Otaniemi, around lunchtime there is already quite a lot of people, but with the additional two cabinets in use there is room for everyone. This hidden gem in Otaniemi is well worth a visit IMHO.
