The staff are happy to make suggestions for the right frame for your work, and the results are always highly professional: beautiful bespoke frames with carefully selected backing paper and hanging kit included. I like the fact that the staff are not afraid to make suggestions: We came in with a limited edition print we wanted to put in a black frame and the guys in store gently suggested that this would completely dominate and ruin the artwork. They recommended a pale frame we never would have chosen ourselves. but I'm very glad the did as the finished product is beautiful and it was immediately obvious that a dark frame would have ruined the look of the print. FS&M is not cheap: we paid £70 for framing a smallish print, but it's definitely worth it for the quality of the service and the finished product. Also for the convenience of the location!

On the other hand, that's why I'm in a good position to review them. They haven't let me down yet! They are decent framers (working with acid-free materials as standard) and relatively inexpensive, especially for the location. Framing does cost money, but if you want to display something special then sticking it in a clip frame is not the best idea you'll ever have. Give them as much time as you can, especially if you want to order unusual mouldings or want oversize glass or mountboard or special UV-resistant glass. If the presentation is taking place later that afternoon it might be possible to pull a rabbit out of a hat (I've known it done), but you shouldn't count on it.

I had some photographs and cigarette cards framed, and one of the cards needed to be reproduced and dyed to match the others. They were very helpful throughout the process, and advised me on the options (you'll have grasped by now this wasn't your average framing job). They did all that (mounting the original on the rear) and mounted it on acid-free mounts with museum quality glass. The finished result is superb, but it cost over £200. So, excellent for special items which needed to be treated with care, whether valuable or of sentimental value.

I don't really know and can't say exactly why, but maybe there is one framer per county that serves all the needs. It seems that way. So I was dreading getting a print framed in London. Not known for being particularly inexpensive or quick with some matters...I feared the worst. And my fears were without merit! Last Monday I popped by Newgate Gallery with my odd -shaped (rectangle) print. A very helpful chap assisted me with picking out a nice frame and going over some matting options (this makes it more pricey, of course). I chose to just go with a straight frame, no matting. Total price: 81.36. WHAT!? Yes. Originally, I thought he said 381.36 and I kind of resigned myself to thinking "well I guess I'll just tack it to the wall with gum." But no, under 100 quid! In the States this would've cost me close to $200, at least. Even better? It was done in TWO DAYS. They emailed me promptly upon finishing the frame job, and I could've picked it up as early as Wednesday. Yes, TWO DAYS! Amazing. I didn't make it back in until a week later, and was helped again by the same friendly guy. He rang me up, packaged my framed print into a bag of sorts that I could carry home and I was on my way. It's now hanging nicely over the mantle, and I'll be returning to Newgate Gallery for my future framing needs. Don't be put off by the name, it's really more of a framing outpost than a "gallery." Pain-free framing! Nice staff. Expedient. Quality workmanship. *payment upon pick-up. *cards accepted.

They do have a range of prints for sale, though many are piled on the floor as the wall space is very limited but the prices are pretty good, especially when you take into account that they come framed. I have had a few things framed here, the whole experience has been good. They have advised me on mount and frame colours, sizes etc. and the final product is great. It is pretty expensive, whether that be simply because I am a bit out of touch with how much it costs to get something framed or whether this place trully is asking over the odds I'm unsure, but it does hit the pocket pretty hard. Still, my pictures look better in the frames than they did lying in a drawer unframed and un-gazed upon.

But you can choose from a huge range of frame styles/colours and they will make a frame and mount to fit your artwork exactly. - They are open at the weekend, so it's easy to visit, even if you can't make it during the week. - They also sell some prints, so you can choose something to go into one of their bespoke frames. - It's not super speedy. It took 3 weeks before my three pictures were ready to come home. My mum is an artist (although she can't paint any more now as she is losing her eyesight...) Anyway I have a huge painting she gave me years ago, but the mount and frame were looking a little depressed. These framers were able to re-use the glass from my original frame, re-mount the painting and give it a brand new, prettier frame. Yay. It means the painting now looks lovely, and it wasn't quite as pricey as having a new frame/glass cut from scratch. I also had a couple of prints mounted and framed, both look perfect. They were both odd sizes, so I couldn't find a frame to fit them at most non-bespoke frame shops. Anyway, this is a nice local business and well worth the expense.

Walked in and it looked lovely and then we spoke to the guy and basically, he didn't want to know. We offered him the commission of a bespoke frame, a brilliant deal, STILL didn't want know!! When we asked him his name in an effort to be friendly, he referred us to the sign at the front of the shop!! Wtf???! So we just left and bought the raw materials to make our own frames, for a fraction of what he was charging! I would never return and would not recommend.
