I've been here for lunch twice now. Both within a week. It was highly recommended to me by a friend who lives just a block over. The environment is very calm and the staff are very friendly without being an ounce overbearing. The lunch special for three rolls is a fantastic value. The large sake is hot, wonderful, and costs as much as a single beer. The fish is fresh and generously portioned, especially considering how affordable it is. I would personally recommend the Philly. The smoked salmon, avocado, and cream cheese make for a very filling, fatty edition to your sushi platter. E-Chiban has been around since I was a kid and it's a decent local spot. While the fish might not be the freshest, their lunch specials are reasonably priced for the area. I usually stick to the same rolls to be on the safe side, and the eel avocado roll is always a good choice. read more

My new fave spot for sashimi! Was craving for sashimi one night and found this place. At first I was a bit wary cause of some reviews but decided to just go for it. Got the sashimi deluxe, the salmon sashimi set (15 pcs), and some pieces a la carte. They were absolutely fresh! Thick cuts, and at the perfect temperature too. Ordered from this place last night and was content after having this, shrimp shumai and miso soup for dinner. Couldn't finish all of it, but it's all good bc I have the leftovers for lunch the next day. I like the fact that the rolls are 8 pieces and not 6, like most places. Also, the spicy tuna had a little crunch to it which made it better. The shumai was standard, but on the good side and the miso was just okay. Me and my wife ordered a few vegan options from this place. On the first time that we ordered a hot and sour soup we were surprised that was eggs on the mix but not on the menu description. We were upset, but decided to give another try. A few days ago we ordered the same item and asked for no eggs - but this time we were surprised with big pieces of chicken in the bottom of the soup. We were looking for a sit down Chinese restaurant in the area so, like any self respecting yelper, I turned to Yelp! I came across this restaurant and decided to give it a try. What got my attention was that they have Thai, Chinese, and Japanese food here! When we got there on a Friday night, the place was packed! They asked us to wait two minutes and then led us to the back of the restaurant where there was a small booth tucked away behind foldable doors. It was really cool! I loved it. Next time, I'll take a pic so you have a visual of what I'm trying to explain lol We ordered crab rangoon, soup, edamame, vegetable gyoza, and spring rolls as apps. Everything was tasty. For our entrees I ordered beef and broccoli, coconut shrimp, and another entree that slipped my mind. My order was the coconut shrimp which was good but was a little too liberal with the mayo in their sauce. I'd definitely order something different next time. We were probably both hankering for useless carbs when we decided on this place. She wanted a sushi roll and I wanted noodles. This place seemed to have it all! Pad Kee Mao: They make it differently here. The veggies listed on the menu were ones I'm not accustomed to having with this particular dish. We were nervous, but we asked if they could replace ALL the vegetables they have listed with vegetables that we wanted. We feared they would mess up the order, but they didn't. They got it right. The dish wasn't bad, but one key ingredient was missing...fresh Thai basil. I understand every cook has a different recipe, which is why I can understand the use of different vegetables, but the basil, well, that's part of the sauce...the essence of the dish! You can't alter that and still call the dish by this name! #fail Sushi Roll: She wanted a roll that wasn't on the menu, so again, we made a special request. The order came correct. Kudos again! Except it wasn't very tasty. Spicy tuna, avocado, and shrimp tempura, nothing fancy. It wasn't horrible, but it was dull and didn't really meet her (or my) expectations. The service is friendly and they handle special requests well. The restaurant is clean and neatly decorated. The prices are average and a pinch lower than the sushi spot across the street. Delivery from here has always been really good - takes a long time but they already give you fair warning online what the wait time is. The food itself is really good. We finally decided to dine-in and were definitely fans of the restaurant. It's very cute and small with a family-run sort of vibe (probably is). The food was really good again, but my boyfriend was disappointed in half of his chirashi and unfortunately it was the part that he was looking forward to: salmon and something else I already forget. He claimed they tasted fishy (in the bad way). The gyoza was really great, but only came with 5 (isn't it normally 6?). Still - always look forward to delicious gyoza! My food came out piping hot and delicious and the eel was amazing. The one thing I have to mention that is a huge pet peeve - my wine glass was dirty. This always happens because places forget to wipe them after washing so they don't notice the lip stains that remain on the glasses. It's very off-putting. I knew it was technically disinfected - just creepy. Food arrived fairly quickly, but they weren't overly attentive. I find that pretty standard at true Asian restaurants so it doesn't bother me. Situation: the sky was gray, the ground covered in snow, and the last thing I wanted to do was brave the tempestuous weather in search of sushi. And yet, my stomach was urging me to find some. There is a lack of sushi restaurants in Ridgewood, but I found E-Chiban and thought to myself, "what the heck, I should order delivery and see how I like it!" Conclusion: I definitely recommend E-Chiban. I was pleasantly surprised by 1) how affordable the rolls were, 2) how ridiculously fast the delivery service was, and 3) how delicious and fresh the rolls were. It looks ok in there. The staff is a little pushy which I do not like. The food is not all that good. Soft not crunchy tempora. That's a big no no and I work in the industry so I know how to make batter and it's either the fryer is too low or u just re-fry or take it out too soon. I ordered the California roll and boston roll. How and why were they warm? I sent it back and said I don't like hot sushi I mean it was warmer than the tempora veggies! They brought back fresh made not sitting out sushi. I don't believe I will go here again. Rather go down the street to tendo. I'd call this a sushi dive, but that would afford this middle of nowhere hole a status it doesn't deserve. Hmm, I thought this place pretty pretty solid. Cheap vegetarian rolls and edamame, and my lady liked her fancier fishier rolls. As I understand it the owners aren't Japanese, but for the simple stuff I order I couldn't tell the difference. I liked it. I think I've walked past this place for years without walking in or trying their take out. Yesterday, I finally decided to give it a try and I was actually pleasantly surprised. The sushi was your standard neighborhood-sushi-joint quality. As someone has said previously, it's definitely better than the sushi from Whole Foods. Which gave me an awful case of gastrointestinal distress. I'm a wimp when it comes to sushi so I usually go for the California roll which you can't really mess up, along with the Tempura Sweet Potato roll which was pretty amazing considering I ordered it blindly. The real winner of the meal would definitely be the Tempura Cheesecake. I know you can probably get better Tempura Cheesecake elsewhere but that was my first time ever tasting it so I was blown a-whey. Anyway, ambience is pretty nice. Service was friendly. This is a yes for the fact that every time I have eaten here like in house, the food has been fresh and when I have been here the place is clean. That is when I come in and eat here - when I have ordered delivery because a big minus here you can't park anywhere near here worth crap so delivery is usually way to go. My delivery has taken forever, I have had to call and ask where it is to only have annoyed staffers say it is on the way like no you can try and do a little effort give an ETA.  When food gets here - if it was supposed to be hot trust me when I say it is cold and the food loses a lot since you have been waiting for it so long.  To summarize I would say this place is middle of the road mediocre can get better but not sure if they ever will. Oh god. The guy who was there today was a total arse! Usually the service is below standard, and easy to deal with, but damn. Also, the thai iced tea was disgusting today. It tasted as though it was rotten. I'm not surprised if the stuff they used was past date. I need to find a roll that has fried shrimp in it somewhere else....It's the only reason why I go.
