I have been studying dance since I was 5 years old (thanks, mom!), so the first thing I did when I moved to Edmonton was find a dance studio. One of my girlfriends recommended Marr Mac. I love this studio's location: it is at the back of the building occupied by Movie Studio and is very discreet. The studio itself is in the basement and consists of several large dance rooms. There are hardwood floors and wall-to-wall mirrors in every room.I signed up for musical theater, hip-hop and jazz. Additionally, there are ballet and tap classes. What can I say about the intructors? These people bring out the best in their students and make everyone believe in themselves. They are quick to provide encouraging words and to commend, and they never reprimand or discourage. There were several older women in my hip-hop class who confessed that their feelings of inadequacy upon starting the class disappeared as the classes progressed, thanks to the instructor's professionalism and encouraging words. I didn't get a chance to experience it first hand but as far as I know, Marr Mac's students get to perform onstage at various venues and to take dance trips abroad. Our musical theater teacher mentioned that once we master our routine, we will get to perform onstage. I wish I stayed at Marr Mac long enough to see this happen. Unfortunate circumstances made me stop attending this wonderful studio. I am thinking about resuming the classes very shortly.

From Ballet to Hip Hop to dancing in heels, and from beginner to intermediate to advanced levels, this studio really has so much to offer the adult dance community. When my daughter were dancing at the suturing my daughter was not aloud to dance at the Ritalin because she was going to be on a school trip for a few weeks and she was going to miss some competitions. We accepted that policy because it was being applied to every body, however the next year it happens again that a student was going to miss some competition for the same reason, and guess what? That student was able to participate in the recital and the competition that she was able to attend. This is not the first situation at that academy, but I definitely, if you want to make your child unhappy take him/her to the academy. I would never recommended it to anybody.

Instead of the smaller dancers being the main focus they were used as backup dancers for the mediocre performances by older kids. The younger kids were often relegated to sitting on the stage watching the older dancers. It was also sad to see how missteps were made including near miss crashes between dancers and "soloists." It is a shame that the Edmonton School of Ballet used these little kids as a marketing tools to sell more tickets. You would think they would showcase their best students but, sadly, they probably did. If you do not believe me, wait until the DVD comes on sale! Be prepared for a good laugh - not at the kids' expense but at the quality of training at ESB.

Celtic Ceilidh has allowed my daughter to compete as little or as much as she would like, in a non-stressful environment. We had the unfortunate experience of enrolling our children in this 'school'. Although the dance…read moreteacher, Ms Lee is obese we decided to give her a chance, after all she's been doing this for many many years. As the classes commenced we found her to be very unprofessional ie: talking about other classes of students saying what 'Dummies' they were. Her words. As for her being able to demonstrate dance moves she was physically unable to. Relying on parents to demonstrate such moves that required going down on the floor and jumping up and back down to the floor. We also had a seeing impaired child enrolled who's mom decided her daughter was not ready to do the Christmas show on stage as Lee stated she would not be there to assist said child. Lee even made a joke in front of several of us about having one child almost fall off every performance saying the girl was ready. Really!!! Lee also wanted to keep our children for three hours back stage during the performances, assuring us she did so every year and would have toys etc. to entertain them. I arrived to find total chaos! No security regarding parents picking up and dropping off children and there were approximately 30 colouring pages, one box of crayons a half pillowcase of mega blocks to entertain over 50 children. Several people we knew walked into the 'secure' area with no questioning etc. anybody could have taken a child! Lee also attempted to physically remove a crying child from my arms. I said absolutely not until her mom comes. Lee actually stated that I was being over protective. It was just one big chaotic mess!!! The result was 6 of us parents withdrew our children which left her with 2 students for Wednesday morning 10 am class. Also note that her Resume' states she's done this or that training with so and so....FACT: she did one day or two day workshops with named people. Using the word trained with is misleading. Very UNsatisfied!!! That's all.

I have signed up my ( just turned) two-year-old for the mini dragon's class. I feel she is a bit…read moretoo young for the class. The class should be for three years and above not two. Things such as stretching and and following directions are a bit too advanced for a age 24 month old. At the end of class when they play with balloons etc she does enjoy it but I wish I would've waited another six months or year. They also change the class from 915 to 9 and we did not get the message so we miss part of the first class. But those two things aren't a big deal and so far we are having a fun time. The staff seem friendly enough and the class is pretty well structured. I like how they let both parents come in or there is a waiting room with a window where grandparents or the other parent can just sit and relax and watch your children. ( this class there must always be one parent present in the class) We are halfway done our eight week class and I would say so far so good. It's a nice way to get your children active.

Having been involved with this tae kwon-do school for over half my life, I can say that it's one of the best out there. Unfortunately, I've had to use what I've learned in real life, and I can tell you that it works. Things have changed a great deal since I started when I was... 12? But that's what happens when businesses expand. The instruction I received personally has always been the best. In my opinion, you get what you pay for. The best teachers, the best facilities, and the best programs. I've met people here that I'm going to know for the rest of my life. The people who have been unhappy obviously don't understand the word "contract", or are the type prone to signing things without reading them, and I find that really unfortunate.
