This greenway trail seems like what I've been looking for. Lexington is notable for having a…read morerelative lack of urban sprawl, with zoning laws ensuring that much of the city is surrounded by rolling hills covered with farms. The outskirts of the city are very pretty to drive through, but you can't really do much as the farms are privately owned and there isn't much in the way of parks or trails. Enter this paved pathway, which runs from the city proper out to the horse center. It seems geared towards bikers, which I am not, but there was certainly space for pedestrians and I saw a few others. I visited a section that ran by some university-owned test farms, and got a treat with nice views, ample songbirds, and peace and quiet. I did get mobbed by some sort of fly as it got dark; though it did not seem to be of any biting or stinging variety you definitely want to consider repellent, along with something for pollen allergies and some sunscreen. The entire length of the trail is farther than I could walk on one night, but I suspect it will be well worth exploring, as this is exactly the sort of thing Lexington needs.

When we arrived, it was packed, meaning zero parking, and we saw groups of twenty plus, with no social distancing and no masks. I had seen a vlog about a newly created trail from 2014 called Dawkins Line Rail Trail (DLRT). It is a trail built in 2013 after RJ Corman decided to close the railroad line in 2004. So, we decided to give it a try; it was another 40 miles east of the Natural Bridge exit. The trail park is located in a small Kentucky mountain town; the people were friendly, waved, and asked us if we were doing okay. Since the wife is hearing, she struck up a conversation with several locals as we walked the trail. Still, it had far fewer people, and it was an unknown for us. Also, when we arrived at the park, I'll admit that parking was hard to figure out, but a path runs parallel for vehicles. So, you'll follow it to the parking lot. The parking lot has four spaces for handicap parking too. The trail has plenty of wooden bridges, a tunnel, a small waterfall, and the entire path is made of caliche, which is a thin mineral deposit of gravel, sand, and nitrates. The DLRT is an excellent place for observing birds, as we saw several yellow finches. So, if you get tired of the same trails, give the DLRT a try the next time. Honestly, I cannot imagine the scenery during the fall months, when we plan on returning.

We have ridden many rail trails and would never recommend this rail trail to anyone. The maintenance of this trail was non existent. The trail head bathrooms were locked and it was 9:30 am.

The trail is named after Daniel Boone, who was given the name Sheltowee (meaning "Big Turtle") when he was adopted as the son of the great warrior Chief Blackfish of the Shawnee tribe . The trail is mostly in the Daniel Boone National Forest, but also takes visitors through the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, Cumberland Falls State Resort Park, Natural Bridge State Resort Park, two large recreation lakes (Cave Run Lake and Laurel Lake), and many wildlife management areas. All but the southernmost 10 miles (16.09 km) are in Kentucky. The trail may be multi-use, in certain sections, allowing horses, mountain bikes and off-road vehicles in some designated sections. Off road motorcycles, SUVs, 4x4, ATV's and even mountain bikes in certain areas can result in equipment confiscation and or fines. The Sheltowee Trace Association (STA) is a non profit organization formed to protect, preserve and promote the Sheltowee Trace National Recreational Trail as a significant national resource for the enjoyment of hikers, bikers and equestrians, and for the value that wild and scenic lands provide to all people. The organization is the public complement to the US Forest Service, National Park Service, and Kentucky State Parks, and a significant partner in the management and operations of the Sheltowee Trace National Recreational Trail. The STA provides maps, trailguides, and shuttle services via their website www.sheltoweetrace.org.
