So to be…read morefair, most everything about the sign up process was done for me - I signed up with my networking group, they sent me a link to sign up directly with the diaper bank and I arrived to the event. This event was a private volunteering event just for our group. Diaper Bank volunteers told us a bit about the organization and how they help the community and then they explained that there were 2 different areas to work in - packaging diapers or packaging period supplies. I worked in the period supply area and it was easy and productive. You fill a small bag with a variety of products, use a sticker to close the bag and place finished products in a bin. Once you have a certain number, you bag them up for distribution. Overall I highly recommend the organization. If you prefer to donate only, you can drop off supplies and they will provide you with a tax receipt. If you want to volunteer, sign up on their website, show up to work and they will get you all set up. Note that their building has a fenced off parking lot which is nice. The building itself is not climate controlled so dress appropriately. It was 90 degrees the day I was there and it was HOT in there.

There is no reason for anyone to be hungry in Madison or St. Claire counties when there's Soup and Share. But what makes Soup and Share unbelievably impressive in its efforts to make an immediate and needed difference in the lives of people living in and out of the community are the following: 1) Soup and Share is open weekly, every Wednesday and Friday (closed on 4th Friday). Most pantries are opened once a month. This makes Soup and Share unique in an effort to sincerely make a quick difference in the lives of those of us in need. 2) Every Friday scrumptious, mouthwatering meals are served to community residents who rush to the facility between noon and twelve - thirty to eat. Sherrie mandates prayer is offered before the consumption of any meal at the facility. Sherrie, Administrative Head / CEO /ETC, offers prayer to those requesting or needing divine intervention in their lives. 3) The volunteers, servers, leads, coordinators and Mrs. Sherrie Hare are more than accommodating; they are just downright friendly, compassionate, helpful and prayerful. We have to sign in on Friday mornings to get our foodstuffs later that evening. Gloria rises from her bed to greet us about 9:00 a.m.; some Fridays are freezing. Still, Gloria shows up willing to get that "initial" ball rolling by making sure every patron is correctly signed in for the food distribution later that day. What I find astounding too is that Sherrie knows the name of every patron . . . it seems. 4) Soup and Share's name is not definitive in the least of all the many roles this pantry plays in the community. Soup and Share has a clothes closet and diaper program for young mothers with infants and toddlers. The cloth closet can be attended by anyone and it houses many new items as well as "hardly" worn pieces. What a blessing! 5) Something has to be said about the quality and variety of the food given patrons on Wednesdays and Fridays. We have been privileged to all kinds of meats and food delicacies. The foods are the best quality. I have heard no rebuffs or complaints. Finally, I must give this place, Soup and Share, the highest accolades and merits since the existence and services provided by this pantry has enabled me to eat at times when it was difficult financially and to eats foods I had only been advantaged to read about in the past. The attitudes of staff and volunteers have uplifted me on days when I was disheartened and dampened by the circumstances of just plain living. Although it's fun to go shopping for loved ones around the holidays (and to be on the receiving end…read moreof someone else's shopping efforts), please keep in mind that there are food pantries and shelters all over St. Louis that would be happy to accept donations this time of year. While packing up for my big move out west, I started a collection of toiletries that were unopened and/or seemed like something the average woman would find necessary. In that bag included nail files, shampoo, body wash, a mini hair dryer and even a Turbie Twist! I found Woman's Place online and called up there to make sure they were accepting donations - they were and were very grateful for the supplies. The woman who met me at the door even commented on the Turbie Twist and exclaimed "One of our ladies is going to LOVE getting this as a Christmas gift". That made me feel really good - totally worth the drive to Maplewood! Again, it's fun to shop for people you know during Christmas. But there's people in our own community who would be grateful for any sort of donation you could provide this winter and beyond, whether it be food, clothing or hair accessories. Do your part this holiday season!
