We were late (don't trust your SatNav system to find it) so missed the tractor ride down but they promptly collected us in the car park. Started with an apple brandy aperitif and that let us know it would be a great night. I am not a big brandy fan but this was great (ended up buying two bottles), easy to drink and refreshing. Followed by two canapés. We were then given some time to walk the premises. I particularly liked the garden, where they grow different veg and herbs. And the views are beautiful Seated for dinner and two more canapés. Also had a chance to order from the bar. As I was driving, had to pass on most of the options but still wanted to try something so went with their local Cranberry drink. I am not usually a fan of fizzy soft drinks but ended up drinking two of these, it was very tasty and refreshing. First proper course was a fattoush salad, with goat cheese, tomato, cucumber and herbs. Very flavorful, it almost came to life with the herbs. Second course was a smoked hake and mashed potato dish. Very interesting, like the way the hake came through. Main course was pork loin from the farm and it was incredible. Smoked flavor but not too smokey, very tender. Accompanied by multiple vegetables. Finally, had a meringue with various fruits and sauces for dessert. Great, much better than I expected. Normally meringue is too sweet but with all the ingredients this one was complex and tasty. With coffee, they also gave us honeycomb (tasted a little burnt to me) and and a sweet made out of beetroot (very interesting). My wife can't stop raving about the experience, as she is a fan of the show and it was an experience. I can't stop raving about the food, every course was so vibrant and complex. You have to go, make a weekend out of it.

We thought we'd treat my parents to a lunch as we were staying in the area and everyone was pretty excited that we were actually going to a 'famous restaurant' for lunch. The place is lovely, decor is fantastic, the shelves are full of local (if a little over priced) produce and it took us a while to see that there was actually a big warehouse-style room out back. When we walked in, nobody was there to acknowledge us and had no idea who to talk to or where to go if we wanted a table. After milling around for a bit I just walked straight through past the kitchen and out back and called over a waitress to ask how this worked...she just sat us down. It smelled good, is a great open space...and, uh, where is the waitress? She was quite incompetent throughout unfortunately, she stayed professionally disingenuous and uninterested in anything we had to say. She forgot we had asked for a high-chair, she forgot one of our drinks, she took forever to take our order and the place wasn't even half full. The food was decent, not as amazing as I'd hoped it would be but good nonetheless. The service here really did let down the whole experience, we even had to wipe clean the high chair ourselves (when it finally arrived at the second time of asking) as it was covered in left-overs from the previous nipper. In short, I am glad I can tick this one off as 'done'. I will not be making an effort to come back to the restaurant, but I will most definitely come back for some of that local cheddar from the deli counter out front, that stuff was?is amazing!

Front of house staff are very pleasant and efficient too. This place has long been a favourite haunt for people that want a decent meal in town and it's my local restaurant as it's just down the hill from me. So I was hoping that it would be blinder so that me and the missus could wander down for dinner and drinks on a regular basis and not have to fork out a taxi. Unfortunately not. The menu lacks imagination, and appears to be devised by someone who really can't be asked with doing anything new and interesting. For instance there was a choice of 5 starters, almost all of which were repeated in the main course section, i.e. mussels as a starter or a main, crab cakes as a starter or a main, etc. The other odd thing was the mussels, listed as local - well they can't be that local as we're not near the sea. Furthermore, after a bit of questioning the kitchen (thank you very helpful front of house girls) it transpired that their mussels were supplied by Samways in Bridport. Now Samways is a very good supplier, but their mussels come from wherever they can get them, mainly Cornwall, Wales but sometimes from Scotland. The local mussels (well as close as you can get) are from Portland which can be very dirty. I suspect our mussels were from Cornwall due to the clean shells, but that's a pure guess. One page of the menu was dedicated to steaks - every type imaginable. The girlfriend as ever went for fillet steak, even after my advice to the contrary. My worst fears were realised when this thing came out, which although technically fillet, didn't really look like one, more like a sirloin with the fat cut off. It also had no real flavour, cue more pepper sauce. In summary, I'd rather spend the extra money when going out and go somewhere great, like The Green in Sherborne. Maybe I need to move there? We returned for a two night stay with bed and breakfast plus evening meals. The friendly owner, from a family of Cypriot chefs, was very welcoming, telling us the history of the pace, and how he has worked hard to turn it around, including appearing on a TV restaurant makeover show. Although he said he is "60% there", we were very happy with our stay. The site is on a busy rural main road, but the rooms were quiet, with small balconies facing the countryside, and though the facilities were basic, they were clean and contained all the usual amenities. At first glance, the menu did not look particularly exciting, with pizzas, pastas, and the usual choice of meat and fish dishes. However, when the mussels starter arrived it was brilliant, with an unexpectedly delicious creamy chili sauce. The mains were just as tasty, and were cooked perfectly. Everything was served promptly by efficient and friendly staff.
