East Street Arts is s building, at the edge of the city centre, containing artist studio spaces and exhibition spaces. It has great facilities for artists using the studios and they put on events and exhibitions for the public. I say public, but it is usually a narrow sector of the public as the place is physically hard to find and you probably wouldn't know it was there unless you were involved in the art scene in Leeds.
I have been to some exhibition openings and the gallery space there a few times, and was shown round the artist studios with the art college when I was a student. The spaces are mostly individual rooms in various sizes and you pay a monthly sum according to how many square meters you occupy. There is a section on the top floor that is more open plan and cheaper to rent. To get a studio you have to apply. Working as an artist there you really feel part of a community - there is a communal space with resources such as magazines, books, computers and a kitchen. The kind of artists there range from traditional painters to avant-garde performance artists.
The exhibitions are ever-changing so if you want to see what's on check out their website and note the opening hours as I don't think they are very regular but it is definitely worth having a look for any aspiring or practicing artist/art writer. read more
