Not wanting to hoof it to study at da HPU library 1-2 blocks away near Bishop St. OR study outside on da numerous tables + seats da line Fort Street (I sked I gonna catch TB or a disease from somebody), I go hea to relax, kaukau + study befoa my classes. HOURS? During regular school year, Mon - Fri, 7 AM - 6 PM (closed during HPU holidays). For this summer 2012, hours are Mon - Fri, 8 AM - 5 PM (May 14 - Aug. 31, 2012) AC, BABY! Especially welcoming on da days wen downtown no mo' trades + da weather makes you feel as if you're up someone's armpit SAFE, WELCOMING ENVIRONMENT. Patronage of this area is limited to HPU students with a valid student ID. No need worry, beef curry, about having bums ask you fo' money, seeing druggies tweak out after their highs, etc. I have empathy fo' da kine populations, but wen I stay paying my hard-earned money to attend college at mo' den $1K PER COURSE, get some tings I no like deal with as I go about my college biz. STUDY, RELAX, REPEAT. There's about a dozen study cubicles situated in da back if you hardcore l'dat + really need to get some studying in. A large screen TV with comfy chairs is available in da middle of da room, and get a few addah sofas + comfy chairs scattered around. PC/PRINTER/WI-FI. The HPU's wi-fi system is available fo' your smartphone, netbook, laptop, or addah kine electronic device. You'll need a login + password. It's not meep-meep RR fast, but respectable enough. If you no mo' computer, get 4 PCs available to log into + utilize fo' writer papers, surf da 'net + print out. Mind you, da buggahs are a wee slowwwwwww. FAVE PLACE TO STUDY ON CAMPUS! I've come here every single freakin' week dis past spring semester + I totally love it. HPU students might not be aware of its existence, esp. since it just opened in Sept. 2011. It has changed. It's a nice place to get together with others and there's a TV, but on mute with subtitles. Along with the couches, there's cubicles/desk areas where you can study / sleep / whatever you please on your own. Three computers on the side if you rather not go to the computer lab and bathrooms in the back area. There's also offices for faulty, the student government meet in a room near the entrance and mailboxes for RSO's are hidden in the hallway. Remember, have your ID ready before walking in!

Halls and classrooms are clean and well-kept. Bathrooms are identified by Wahine (female) and Kane (male ) signs. I saw many security guards and felt safe to be on the campus. Unfortunately we are not under normal circumstances so the campus is closed to the public- EXCEPT: when the open market is open on Saturdays, from 7:30 to 11am. Not as big as before, and they are located in parking area closest to Diamond Head Theater (ewa-makai). Other than that- Kapu to the public. (Not opened) Because of the nature of the pandemic it could shut down again so read the papers on the latest changes to lockdown rules. So when regular accessibility returns to the public at large, come by and see what this beautiful campus has to offer. Nice views, decent food options during the week days and delicious culinary delights courtesy of Kapiolani's world class program in the evenings. Support local education!

After high school, my friend's daughter wanted to go to Cosmetology School and needed some customers to gain experience. If you need a simple manicure, pedicure, haircut, etc. - and have time... this is a great place to go! The prices are reasonable, and the students are sweet and open-minded! The teacher came around a few times to check on the progress, so no worries! Book your appointment, park on campus, and sign in with the receptionist who will give a parking pass for $3 - which will be added to the bill for services. It's cash only. Remember to tip the student! Note: I got a manicure - it was very relaxing! My former coworker got a haircut. My friend is getting a scalp treatment and facial tomorrow! I want to try that next!

The classes offered are usually graduate level and upper undergraduate oceanography, marine biology or ecology classes. HPU graduate students in the Master of Science in Marine Sciences can benefit from graduate offices and laboratories. Some of the professors' offices are definitely among HPU's nicest!! And, incredible but true, all students, staff and researchers can enjoy FREE parking! Rare in Hawai'i. However, don't forget your sweaters and cup of coffee, the AC is cranked up! The biggest downside of this paradisiac location is the commute. If you own a car, you'll hate the gas expenses. If you don't, you're quite screwed. Only a few bus lines (22, 57) go around, and only about once a hour. Plan ahead! But once you start going to the oceanic institute, you just don't want to have classes in any other campus :-)

The professors were all pretty caring and understanding of our grueling tennis training schedule since we had many tennis players in the business school. Other departments were not as forgiving, thus my career was only 2 years long in athletics, but I needed to maintain my GPA for my academic scholarship. The classrooms were very varied with some in lecture format and some like a conference room. Even though towards the end of my degree the courses were pretty intense, I'm glad I had the experience of going to UH and learning at Shidler.

I understand the frustrations with the UH system, but for the 4 years I spent at Shidler (it took me a while because of scheduling and transportation) overall, I think I had a good experience. As disgruntled as I was with a few teachers stuck in the past (absolutely no laptops for note taking, must code a website from html only and Mrs. Chen's own example looked worse than a web 1.0 geocities *smh*) there were far more professors that made my time worth it: Rabacal, Joon, Lister, Bhawuk... and resources that really aided in my journey when success was out of my own control like the women's center, student counseling center, and especially KOKUA. College is honestly what you make of it and how you choose to deal with what life and the system throws at you. For an average student that just comes to class, doesn't care to connect with teachers, goes home, does homework and comes back everyday to do it all again, when one thing sets you off, you won't have much to balance out your opinion. For me on the other hand, I reached out to teachers, connected, found out how much a lot of them care, and I got involved in business clubs--which really made me whole Shidler experience much different from those who never joined a club their entire education. The Shidler business clubs are a whole other world and kept me crazy active with company tours, socials, mentoring, and a yearly inter-club competition that gets CRAZY competitive and the performances are nuts. But that's just a small part of Shidler that can make your experience all the better. Shidler also offered resident mentors that you could schedule time with to talk to and run your business ideas by of course for free. You never had to pay for printing as they alotted you like 500 pages a year in the computer lab. You get access to all kinds of business subscriptions to Forbes and other reports and whatnot that non-resident would otherwise have to pay for. Those who complain, did they make any use of these resources? Did they have any other involvement at Shidler? Did they make any effort to do what they could to make their experience better? Or did they simply feel entitled to perfect professors and a perfect education? No college is going to give you that. It's up to you to make the most of what it throws at you just like you need to make the most of what life throws at you. --or are you just going to give your life a one star review and be on your way never bothering to make it better for yourself? Thank you to all the professors and counselors that helped me on my journey. I didn't think I'd graduate but with the kokua of so many, I made it.

5-21-23 Dance Showcase was held in the upper gym. We left home 2-1/2 hours before showtime and…read morethe parking structure was already so full. We got one small stall on the top level in the sun. Fortunately they had a bake sale plus snack goodies and bottled water that I so desperately needed. Not even June but it's definitely very hot. The gym was packed with guests even sitting on the gym floor on one side of the perimeter. So cute to see the little ones just mastering tumbling to the 3 honored seniors. The instructors were decked with leis. Costumes ranged from ballet tutus, grass skirts, cute activewear, risqué almost bondage type get ups and lots more. Dances included breakdance by a crew which was surprising to see. Of course you come to see your dear to your heart performer but also enjoy many other groups and varied selections. Save the best for last, just like graduation, the flowers, leis, tributes from family and friends.

Excelling in excellence, Iolani Schools has provided a high standard in the state of Hawaii…read more I remember growing up days, the school I wanted to go to the most was Iolani. But being from the typical Chinese family, my mother told me it was more important for the boys to get that "excellent education". Which was indicative of the earlier days where the student population at Iolani seemed to have skewed towards Chinese males. Heck, at one time it was an all male school. Today's student profile boasts both male and female and a broad spectrum of ethnicities. And I am always happy to see my friends' kids attending my brother's alma mater where academics has always excelled. More recently I have enjoyed the numerous musical presentations the talented young men and women of Iolani have been performing. And happy to see them under excellent tutelage of friend Mary Chestnut Hicks and other outstanding talents. Theatre is top grade. Facilities well maintained. Staff are doing such an important and excellent job. Iolani, keep doing what you do in molding and encouraging our young children into outstanding future leaders of our community. You rock!

My friend and I visited this school from Japan for a one-week English study program…read more At the beginning, we took a language level test, which allowed us to join a class suited to our English ability. The teachers were very friendly and encouraged communication among the students. The classes were highly interactive, and I was able to develop practical English skills that cannot be learned through traditional, lecture-based lessons. Although the study period was very short--just one week--it was a valuable experience for me and greatly increased my motivation to continue studying English.
