The staff are mainly volunteers who really love what they do and take pride in looking after the animals and sending them to suitable homes. A couple of our family dogs have come from here and they have always been delighted to hear from us when we have kept in touch after taking the dog home. They often hold fundraiser events so look out for these, and go and help them raise some money for this very good cause.

The entrance is modern, bright and welcoming. You enter into the coffee shop/reception area. This is where you meet your guide. All are volunteers and all are very knowledgeable, enthusiastic and very friendly. You are given a sticker and the magic really begins. You leave the reception into a airy stable yard. On the right there are two huge deeply straw filled areas(stables really doesn't do it justice!) Walking between them you enter the stable areas.Your guide has the history of each resident and you get the opportunity to make some new friends. The tour takes in the various areas that make penny farm such a wonderful and successful place. you will visit the tack room ,the medical unit, the schooling area, the walker and there is also the opportunity to have a walk down to the numerous fields. You may even get to meet the stable cat!! After your tour the cafe offers light meals, snacks and drinks. It is light and airy with pine tables & chairs which are well spaced. additionally, the toilets are clean and modern. After your snack the gift shop always seems to call me! Here you can buy various horse related items- prints, postcards, mugs, Christmas cards, books and toys. It is free to visit Penny farm and although donations are welcomed there is no pressure to donate. Penny farm also hosts children's birthday parties (wish I was 8 again!) and has an open day every September. The opening times are 11am-4pm Wed, Sat & Sun. They are also open bank holidays. It really is a magical place and I always feel so happy when I have been to see my horsey friends!

A member of staff showed us around the kennels and was able to answer all our questions. If you have an interest in a dog they will take it on to the field with you so you can get to know it a little better away from the kennel environment. There are a number of criteria you need to meet before you can take an animal so it's worth checking out what they are on the website before going down there.

Although I…read morepersonally have not had a dog from here, I have taken neighbours to the centre and have looked in the past for a breed that I wanted, that sadly they didn't have. When you visit you walk through a wonderful doggy playground that they use for the poor dogs that are waiting on new homes. So if you need a canine companion take a look at the Dogs Trust, as they just my have the doggy for you! If they sadly don't then perhaps you can do like me and drop them some food, toys and blankets in when you can as well as any financial help you are able. The good thing about the Dogs Trust is they don't put healthy dogs down and will look after them until they can go to their new forever home...

Like all rescue centres they have loads of kittens and puppies looking for some where to live, but they also have adult animals who are semi-permenant residents. When we last visited it was only to take some old pillows, but we had to see the kittens while we were there. Needless to say we came away £30 poorer but with a little bundle of fun - 8 week old Scrabble - one of the many kittens. The staff are very good at helping you to choose the right animal for you, and they would far rather keep an animal at the rescue centre than send it to the wrong home. When taking an animal you only ever adopt it, with the condition that if you are unable to continue to care for the animal it must be returned to Freshfields. They also ask that cats are kept in at night and that all animals are neutered as soon as they are a suitable age. Freshfields also rescue horses, farm animals, ducks and feral cats to my knowledge.

If you love dogs, but can't keep one of your own or are looking for a new family dog then Manchester Dogs home definitely a place to consider. I'm in the first category, I live in a flat but love animals so recently joined the dogs home as a volunteer so I can walk the dogs when I'm free. Becoming a volunteer is easy, there is a section on their website called volunteers where you register. We were then invited to an informal day on-site where we were greeted by the friendly Julie who gave us an induction to becoming a volunteer and helping out at the home. Their approach is very relaxed and there is no obligation, you help out as much and as little as you can. There are a variety of things you can help with if dog walking isn't your thing either as they often need extra non-walking help at the home. Once you are registered you just sign in and then proceed to the kennels where the trained staff will hand you a dog on a lead. You can specify the size of dog as well, so if you're new to this, like we were, you can pick a small dog to begin or whatever dogs you're comfortable with. Walking the dogs is great, we had a little Jack Russell called Babs who was really happy to see us. Behind the dogs home is an open area full of grass, trails and paths to walk the dogs in. Little Babs obviously led the way... little tail wagging. The staff have always been really friendly and helpful with us, so if get involved today and visit the volunteer section on their website.

You're also welcome to spend a few minutes with the cats you're interested in, without the staff hovering round, so you get a chance to get to know your future pet better. The last time we got a cat (Wilson - he went to live with the lady down the road though), it was £30 donation, and if you do that Gift Aid thingy they get more. They also sold us a cat carrier for a fiver. Bargain. Now I'm going to upload some photies of our lovely cats, yay! PS If you come here, watch out for the track down to the place. It's very bumpy and not good if your car's got lowered suspension or anything fancy like that.

All the dogs have large kennels, in a big bright room with a little agility area and plenty of room to get to meet your new family member! There were tonnes of staff around and all the dogs look well cared for, we only wish we could have adopted more. They also offer loads of support after adoption, with a call from the vetinary nurse to check on how he was settling in. 10/10 adopt don't shop
