A MUST DO!!! I highly recommend you take the tour with Adrian if he's available! We came from LA (I'm from San Diego) so as first timers to Mexico City we were expecting amazing food. While the city has great food, Adrian knows all the best spotsThe tacos and sandwiches we had blew us away like nothing we've ever tasted. They even have burritos, tamales, smoothies, drinks, and desert on the tour. Make sure to skip breakfast because you'll be eating enough for the whole day. We toured 12 different spots and every stop was amazing, friendly chefs/locals and Adrian gave us a great background of the culinary history behind Mexico and it's finest ingredients. This was an amazing tour! We did the Narvarte night tour. This took us to 5 different locations that ended in a mezcal tasting which we really enjoyed. Garlic tostada & a costilla volcán - these were amazing! Soo much garlic that I was in heaven. The costilla volcan had a lot of cheese which felt like a tostada pizza. Soup sampler - beef broth was great cause it was a cold night and was warming. The flavors were like a Vietnamese soup. TIP: I liked the beef vs shrimp. Tacos a pastorr - for $1usd I'll take 10. Lol. These were good. Each station kinda tasted different cause one had a little more char than the other. Tacos de suadero - best taco of the trip. TIP: in your second round ask for beef and mans chorizo! Mezcal tasting - very informative of the different types and alcohol %. The ice cream was great! I'd highly recommend this tour and Mario made the trip very fun and since he's a chef he also gave alot of context of the food and how to cook it. read more

Best advice I can give anyone headed to CDMX: Book at least one Eat Mexico tour. We did two, and we were lucky to get Sofia both times. We did the Street Food tour first, and the next day we did Merced. Both were awesome, and we learned so much on each tour, with very little overlap. On the street food tour, we tried tamales, CDMX-style quesadillas, tacos de canasta (basket tacos) cemitas, coarnitas, squash blossom tacos, seafood tostados and old-fashioned candy. We also visited a neighborhood mercado and a tortilleria. On the Merced tour, we stopped at many different stalls, where we tried some pretty sane things, like brisket tacos and 10 different kinds of mole, but we also had the option to try grasshoppers, ants, beef head and more. Sofia did a great job of letting us try a lot of different things but never pressuring us to eat more than was necessary. I feel like I have a true knowledge and understanding of both the street food scene and the market scene. It helped me learn neighborhoods, try the subway, and see so much more than I would have on my own. I will tell everyone who asks me for my Mexico City recommendations that there is no way they can miss this. read more

We did the street food tour with Eat Mexico on a strong recommendation from a friend, and I have to agree that this is the best thing we did on our trip. Our hosts, Ariane and Mario, were really friendly and informative, and we were lucky enough to get a private tour since no one else booked a tour that day! The three hour tour was so fun and passed by so quickly. I felt like I learned so much about Mexican food and culture, and ate so many delicious, local treats to boot (there was honestly nothing we ate that I didn't like, and it's so hard to pick a favorite, but the quesadilla with huitlacoche was truly out of this world)! The food is unlimited per stop, but my friend and I ended up just getting 1 thing and splitting most of the time, just due to the size of the portions at each stop and the quantity of food you get to try. We were definitely full at the completion of the tour. My favorite thing is that Eat Mexico sends you a detailed email which summarizes all the vendors you visited on the tour! Will definitely be retracing our steps the next time we are in Mexico City, and also hopefully doing the La Merced tour at some point, since I've heard so many good things about it! read more

We did La Merced Market tour with Adrian. It was most definitely one of the highlights of my trip to Mexico City. What an awesome experience! We ate and drank things I have never eaten or drank before, seen things I've never seen before. So many varieties of local food and without Adrian we would not have known where or what to eat. All the places he took us to the people were so nice. He answered so many questions. He gave us a lesson on dried peppers and another on mole, we tasted lots of mole paste, also had the opportunity to eat fried bugs, which were actually pretty tasty. We learned so much. Adrian was a wealth of knowledge! Such a cool cultural experience. The market was huge, without him we'd of gotten lost. At the end we got a nice sampling of Mexican candy (that bee's were swarming around). We went to an amazing old historical restaurant for our last tasting. It was so cool. We only covered a very small part of the market and that part was huge. I am glad we were there with a local. He also took us on the subway which as pretty cool, and answered all our questions. Would recommend this tour highly! Eat Mexico was really easy to book with. Just did it online, they were very responsive and great to work with. We were struggling to get to the meeting spot on time and we were shivering, but man oh man was it worth it to suffer through early morning Mexico City traffic. This four-hour plus (TOTALLY WORTH IT) tour given by Nico through the Merced market and surrounding neighborhood gave me the Mexico City experience that I so wanted. Nico guided us to the market via the subway, which was an especially great touch because with just a weekend in Mexico City, I was unsure of how I would experience one of the greatest metro systems in the world. Luckily, Nico and EatMexico worked the ride into the tour. Once at the market, we enjoyed fried tamales (world changing) and atole de pinole, the best-tasting chamoy (so good we almost cried) by a local purveyor, and several different tacos. While we were busy enjoying the riches of Mexican food, Nico told us the history of Merced market and the various foods that we were eating. The tour then took us outside the market into the surrounding neighborhood where we were treated to candy, ice-cream, coffee, and gourmet Mexican food and cocktails. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone staying in Mexico City, no matter how short your stay may be. There is no way I would have been able to tackle Merced market by myself, so Nico & EatMexico made it easy to experience an essential destination. *TIPS* - First of all, buy the tour, it's worth it. - In Mexico City during rush hour, every mile equals like 5 minutes, so leave super early to get to the tour on time. - Don't eat breakfast, you'll need room to try everything. - Dress comfortably, there's a lot of fast-paced walking through tight spaces. - Bring Pesos, you may want to purchase some of the things you see in the market. read more

We had a great tour through the enormous and chaotic Merced market. It was full of wonderful and amazing sights, sounds, smells and people. We ate our way across the acres of market stalls and food vendors under the expert guidance of Nico, a former chef and professional foodie. His running commentary made all of the sights and sounds so much more relevant as he linked the products and dishes to Mexico's history and culture. We ate some amazing things (yes, we ate the crickets and worms and dried shrimp! But they were optional!) and marveled at the scale and intensity of the place. It was a side of Mexico City that most visitors likely never see - and wouldn't know how to navigate if they did see it! It was thoroughly enjoyable, and made even more so by Nico's excellent English and Mexican charm. read more

A truly authentic/magical culinary experience! We did the Merced Market Tour and it was a highlight of our trip to CDMX. Mario, our tour guide was incredible. He took us through the market (a place I wouldn't feel comfortable going to alone due to the sheer size, language barrier, and lack of knowledge about the local cuisine) and shed light on the historical, cultural, and culinary value of traditional Mexican ingredients and dishes. The food itself was delicious, each stop better than the next. We sampled tacos, agua frescas, and moles to name a few. Mario was very considerate about our limits, checking in to see how adventurous we were before suggesting that we try certain foods (like insects!) and always had options up his sleeve if certain stalls were closed. He was so smart, experienced, and was kind enough to give us recommendations for our day in xochimilco as well. If you're headed to CDMX, this is a must!! read more

We went on this food tour one morning while we were Mexico City and it was the highlight of our trip. Our guide, Hector, was so friendly, spoke great English, and knew so much about the city. He explained everything in great detail and answered any questions we had. We have done other food tours in Mexico City and this was definitely our favorite. They take you "behind the scenes" at food places and show you how things like tortillas are made. We were a group of vegetarians and Hector modified the tour to best suit our needs. We made 11 stops (often eating multiple items at each stop) and left VERY full and happy. We got to try a variety of food, including fresh juices and fruit. Starting this review by saying our tour guide Adrian was incredible. Super knowledgeable, great english (he's lived all over the world), had answers to every one of our questions, so friendly, and provided a perfect half-day at the Merced Market. The tour itself is fantastic and you'll definitely leave full of food and with a camera full of beautiful photos. You'll try all sort of things from tacos, to tamales, to BUGS, to seafood, to ox heads, and more. You can eat as little or as much as you'd like.. and as adventurous as you want. You could also feel free to order more conservatively at different food stalls if that's your thing. Either way, this is a must-do when you're in Mexico City. My girlfriend and I aren't typically into this sort of thing because we want an authentic experience and don't want things watered down for tourists. But this tour is not that at all and would be the thing we will remember most highly from our entire trip. read more

I'm so glad I stumbled upon someone recommending Eat Mexico just after I booked a trip to Mexico City. I did the Street Food Beginner's Guide tour, the Chilango Tacos 101 tour, and the Saving Native Corn Tortilla Class. I had an amazing time doing each of them. Chilango Tacos 101 may have been my favorite. I will take the lessons from the tortilla class with me forever. I cannot recommend this company enough. Both the street food tour and the tortilla class taught me something I feel like a moron for not knowing about before: a tortilla has two sides, the belly (where you put the filling) and the back. This blew my mind, I had no clue! This is hardly mentioned anywhere I could find on the internet, but every Mexican knows this. If you want to learn how to tell the two sides apart so you don't eat a taco inside out, go do one of these tours! Or just ask a Mexican person. read more

I went on the La Merced tour with Eat Mexico and it was amazing! I really can't say enough great things about it. We toured with Ubish and he was an excellent guide. He grew up in CDMX and you can easily see his love for this city, his love for the food and culture. Very knowledgeable and kind. The market is unbelievable. It is huge, it is crowded, it is colorful and depending on the area, it smells insanely good. We stopped at 5 to 7 stands/restaurants on this tour and ate everything and YES, EVERYTHING IS DELICIOUS. I think La Merced requires an open mind and sense of adventure and if you're have those, absolutely go on this tour. CDMX was a wonderful place and I cannot wait to go back. I found a nonstop flight to Mexico City and suddenly I was in a city of 28 million where I didn't know anything. Kind of like heaven for me to have so many new restaurants to try. So... After getting settled and walking around I realized it would probably be a good idea to get the lay of the land from a local. Did a little research and Eat Mexico along with a few others came to the top of my list. Made a few phone calls and Christine at Eat Mexico was very responsive and went out of her way to get me into a tour while the others didn't have tours running and/or didn't have listed phone numbers. Anyway. I lucked out and ended up with a private tour with Ubish and loved it. Met up in front of Sears at 10:30 and I started out asking for a decent cup of coffee (which was surprisingly hard to find for me) and he said he knew just the place. Walked to Cafe Independencia (which is inside and upstairs at Mercado Independencia, btw) where Ubish recommended the honey latte. Si, Como no? Damn it was good and Ubish's excellent recommendations just went up from there. I don't want to gush too much but get a tour with Ubish if you can. Really affable person who seemed to know darn near everyone in the food scene in Mexico City. He also gave me restaurant rec's for the remainder of my trip and they were great for me. Paramo being the highlight if you are interested. Lot's of really good recommendations on things to cook when I got home too. Really appreciated this tour and I hope Ubish either opens his own restaurant or comes to Austin to do the same soon. I don't see him doing tours for long so book him while you can. One more thing... My wife and I took a Merced Market Tour that was hosted by Ariane, and right away I knew that we would get tremendous value exploring the market with someone with her level of training and professional experience in Mexican cuisine and ingredients. Ariane provided deep insight into which ingredients and dishes came from which parts of the country, the long family history of different vendors, and what makes a good version of dish. Along with helping us navigate the Byzantine maze of the market, you could tell that the company spends significant time determining which vendors to visit. We were super lucky to get in a small group of four total people with our excellent guide Mario for a night tour around Narvarte - a neighborhood that I would never have explored on my own, and I am so glad I did! Mario introduced us to different snacks and drinks from around Mexico, and talked about the history of the neighborhood as we ate and drank our way through. Personable and laid back, he expertly curated our experience to places where locals were enjoying their Tuesday night. This is the best you can do on your Mexico city visit. You would never explore its food and character this way as a tourist. The tour is planned very well, it's well balanced in experience, tastes, walking and talking :) We visited very old, original coffee roasting shop, a taco/quesadilla place, an original drink bar and two markets (with a lot of tasting included and an opportunity to but something). In a crowded city it was organized so well that it was comfortable to taste, to buy, to hear the tour guy or the seller. No running, no staying behing, no excluding etc. And the tour Guy, Ubish Yaren (find him on social media) is just an amazing person, kind, funny, intelligent, well informed and empathetic to his gueasts Thank you! read more

I used Eat Mexico based on all the great reviews. Unfortunately I was very disappointed. I thought we would be immersed in Mexican Street Food. Unfortunately our tour felt more like a tourist trap where we pay a bunch of money and sample a few foods. It was a total rip off and we didn't have a the food/cultural experience that I was expecting. I would not recommend this tour. I'm sure you can hire a private guide for the same price if you're a group. We ended up hungry and underwhelmed by the experience. I gave an extra star for a very nice tour guide. read more

I did the street food walking tour. It was amazing! Our tour guide, Adriane, was super knowledgeable and had great recommendations. We ate so much, and were definitely stuffed by the end of it, but the walking helped keep us from feeling super uncomfortable. Make sure to pace yourself with the food. There will be plenty, you will not leave hungry! I highly recommend this tour, especially early on in your trip so that you can get a good idea of how the more popular part of the city is laid out. At the start of our La Merced tour, we met our wonderful, knowledgeable, smart, engaging tour guide, Anais and we headed to the market on the subway. She was methodical and went at a pace that encouraged us to slow down and take everything in. The cross-section of food we sampled was simply fantastic. Two in our group are pescatarians and they had plenty of choices on the tour. However this is not for vegans or very strict vegetarians. Also depending on your children, I would recommend this for families with kids 16 and up. Make sure to read the 'warnings' about this tour before booking. They do set expectations for the tour very well. Save for one of us, we didn't bring our phones and most money with us. What a freeing experience that was! Every stall owner/worker was generous of spirit, extraordinary artisans and chefs. It was the ideal way to start our time in Mexico. read more

This was our first trip to Mexico City. Given its size we were expecting the city to be a little overwhelming. Taking this food tour really helped us acclimate to the Centro District. Ubish, was a great guide, not only on the tour, put in pointing us to places to visit and things to do during our short stay. Ubish was well-versed in the history of the city and its cuisine. The food was tasty and we certainly had had our fill by the end of the tour. We enjoyed strolling and nibbling in the San Juan market. I appreciated Eat Mexico's attention to their clients needs. I am primarily a vegetarian and noted it in the online form. Christine contacted me immediately and explained some of the challenges of vegetarian dining on the streets. I really didn't have any problems navigating veggie options on the tour. I would highly recommend this tour. You need to check your privilege at the door and recognize you are paying $85 to eat street food. But it was well worth it and we enjoyed meeting other travelers on our journey. 5 stars and two thumbs up!! read more

Ubish was the perfect guide: he patiently answered all of our (4-person) group's questions, provided great enthusiasm for his city and its food, gave us tons of interesting background information, allowed us plenty of time to enjoy each location, and was generally just a great person to spend three hours with. We took the Late Night Tacos and Mezcal tour. Adrian, our guide, was wonderful. What a treat to be taken to some of the best spots in the city by a professional chef! He made it easy and fun. We felt like we were just exploring the city with an old friend. He introduced us to the owners of the establishments and we felt at home in each location. It was great to see the city's night life. Our group of five took the Eat Mexico tour through Mercado de la Merced and we highly recommend it. Our guide, Ariane, was incredibly knowledgeable about the city's history, local customs, and cuisine and seamlessly weaved in enriching narrative and context throughout our tour. Our group is adventurous and comfortable with international travel and street food but we all agreed that Mercado de la Merced's size and variety make it challenging to navigate without a local guide. We tasted a variety of delicious tacos, tamales, mole, traditional beverages, ice cream, and even got to try some not-so-typical dishes we wouldn't have picked solo like cricket quesadillas, and my personal favorite, the Mexican truffle or "Huitlacoche." We loved learning about the history of each dish and the families that operated each stall that we visited. We will definitely book another Eat Mexico tour the next time we are in Mexico City. read more
