Tip: The bowing cross is nice.
Last Wednesday, I was driving northbound on Birchmount Road, just before Lawrence Avenue East. I was stopped in traffic. I looked to my left and noticed a curved, bent cross. It was a part of Ebenezer Revival Tabernacle.
I liked the design of this cross. I had to do some research on it.
This structure is called the bowing cross. It represents humility and reverence. The intentional forward curve or arch mimics the posture of someone taking a bow or kneeling in prayer. It visually represents the biblical theme of ultimate humility and submission to God.
Ebenezer comes from the biblical phrase, "Hitherto hath the Lord helped us," or a marker of God's faithful assistance. The arching cross signifies a literal milestone or marker of gratitude, looking down to bless the congregation and the ground the church stands on.
Ebenezer Revival Tabernacle is a pentecostal church and missionary ministry. It was established in 1987 and has moved around. I learned that it used to be a part of Aldergrove Public School in the early 1990's, which is in my neighbourhood in Markham. It now has a permanent home at this location in Scarborough.
The church offers weekly services and community outreach programs for individuals and families in the greater Toronto area.
Sunday morning worship is at 10:45 am. It also has a Sunday evening worship at 6:15 pm.
This church also has Wednesday bible studies, men's and women's fellowships, and a Friday children's club.
There's a one-way entrance that leads you to the parking lot behind the church.
